Witching days are very volatile.
Triple Witching Hour (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_witching_hour)
Triple witching hour is the last hour of the stock market trading session (3:00-4:00 P.M., New York Time) on the third Friday of every March, June, September, and December. Those days are the expiration of three kinds of securities:
* Stock market index futures;
* Stock market index options;
* Stock options.
The simultaneous expirations generally increases the trading volume of options, futures and the underlying stocks, and occasionally increases volatility of prices of related securities.
On those same days in March, June, September, and December, Single-stock futures also expire, so that the final hour on those days is sometimes referred to as the quadruple witching hour.
Quadruple Witching (http://www.mahalo.com/quadruple-witching)
"Quadruple Witching" is a day on which four major contracts - stock index futures, stock index options, stock options and single stock futures - all expire. The trading on these days is typically volatile, especially during the "Quadruple Witching Hour", which is the hour before the markets close (3 p.m. to 4 p.m. ET). Quadruple witching happens on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December.
The reason that a quadruple witching day may have volatile trading conditions is that many investors want to unwind their interests in futures and options contracts prior to the contract expiration date. Stock trading increases as investors replace or repurchase existing contracts.http://web.streetauthority.com/terms/q/quadruple-witching.asp3
2010 Witching Days:
Friday March 19th
Friday June 18th
Friday September 17th
Friday December 17th

The knock down leading up to it was my guess. It's was brutal in Dec and in May.

My thought is that the manipulators take the metals down hard in the day(s) preceding options expiration.

Dear Mr. Ramirez:
I thought you might be interested in looking into the silver trading today. It was a good example of how a single seller, when they hold such a concentrated position in the very small silver market, can instigate a selloff at will.
These events trade to a regular pattern and we see orchestrated selling occur 100% of the time at options expiry, contract rollover, non-farm payrolls (no matter if the news is bullish or bearish), and in a lesser way at the daily silver fix. I have attached a small presentation to illustrate some of these events. I have included gold, as the same traders to a lesser extent hold a controlling position there too.

Price drop at options expiry -
(IMHO) - you get two things -
1) The commercial shorts want to suppress the price so that the options are valueless (or at least minimal)
2) Most people know the longs will drive the price down on expiry days, so they sell a day or so early to lock in profits.

DMAC, let's sticky this. It will be helpful all year. Thanks for compiling it.
Here is a useful article (http://gold-silver.us/forum/gold-silver-precious-metals/options-calendar-vs-market-manipulation-article-with-graphs/) which shows history of some of these days through June.

Harvey Organ says today July 16 is options expiry - but it's not listed on the "official list".
Anybody know what Harvey is talking about, in his Thursday July 15 market wrap-up ?
"It is also interesting that GLD options expire tomorrow. Although there really is no metal behind this vehicle, the cartel does not need to see a massive call option turn into a possession of GLD and then turn that into an obligation to get metal."
Are GLD options important enough to make it on the official GS-US list ?
Judging by the 8:30 AM Eastern time cram-down ($1205 to $1195), we are seeing the kind of volatility we expect on options days.

I think Harvey Organ is referring only to GLD options expiration, which happen monthly on the 3rd Friday of each month, IIRC. Yes, given that GLD is a prime tool of the cartel's manipulation scheme, it was smart of you to bring it up gunDriller.
Ted Butler also thinks so, check his latest on King World News:
July 10th 2010 Metals Wrap Up (http://kingworldnews.com/kingworldnews/Broadcast_Gold+/Entries/2010/7/10_Ted_Butler_on_the_Metals_Market.html)
Here is Jesse's current analysis on GLD's options expiration effect on the gold price:
Gold Daily Chart, Overhead Resistance, the 50 DMA, and GLD Option Expiry MaxPain (http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspot.com/2010/07/gold-daily-chart-overhead-resistance.html)
snip
This could be tied to the option expiration tomorrow in the GLD ETF. This has become a major trading instrument for cross trades in the metal, and is convenient because it has a tenuous relationship to the physical bullion market.
Here is an interesting page, put GLD in the ticker:
http://www.optionpain.com/MaxPain/Max-Pain.php
Here is a chart on the Gold dates we have left this year, from Jesse's Cafe:
Gold and Silver Option Expiration Dates Remaining in 2010 (http://jessescrossroadscafe.blogspot.com/2010/06/some-gold-and-silver-trading-dates-to.html)
18 June 2010
Not all expirations are equally influential on the markets. As in the case of stocks it depends on the popularity of the contract, and of course the size and distribution of puts and calls at the various strike prices.
Investors can ignore these 'wiggles.' I tend to keep them in mind for entry and exit purposes for non-futures positions, and potential hedging in my trading portfolio.

Let's see if Harvey is right again today (http://harveyorgan.blogspot.com/2010/07/re-harvey-organs-daily-gold-fw-harvey.html). He said:
"Unlike the Gold and silver puts and calls, the dominate position here are the calls. you will see that the huge concentration of calls surround 1220.00. You can be sure that gold will settle close to that level tomorrow." [Friday 7/16]
So far we are way off ($1188 as I write), so watch for elevator up towards the end of COMEX (1:30 PM), or possibly on the Globex after COMEX close.

thanks a lot. looks useful.
now i just have to figure it out ! 8)
i can't help but wonder how much the timing of the price smash-downs has to do with the imminent lunch-hour of the JPMorgan crew.
if they have a hot date on a Friday, do they hang it up at 11:30 AM ? i mean, they're only human.
it seems like most of the activity occurs on NYMEX between 8 AM and noon, then sometimes on NY Globex or London a few hours earlier.

i can't figure out how to set it to list options expiry dates.
according to Harvey Organ, in July, that's July 25, 2013.
does anyone have a link to a web page list of 2013 options expiry dates, like we had for 2012 ?

thanks !
in 2012 all the Comex Gold/Silver options expiry was 25 to 30 of the month.
it looks like this is options expiry for a different industry/ market, or they moved all the Gold/Silver options expiry forward by a week.
i'm looking for the calendar that has this format -
"July 26 Comex August gold options expiry
July 26 Comex August copper options expiry
July 27 Comex August miNY gold futures last trading day
July 27 Comex July gold futures last trading day
July 27 Comex July silver futures last trading day
July 27 Comex July copper futures last trading day
July 27 Comex August miNY gold futures last trading day
July 27 Comex August E-mini copper futures last trading day
July 27 Nymex July platinum futures last trading day
July 31 Comex August gold futures first notice day
July 31 Comex August copper futures first notice day"
