(CNN) -- A natural gas pipeline exploded Tuesday in northern Texas, injuring at least three people, a spokeswoman for the Lipscomb County Sheriff's Office told CNN.

The spokeswoman said a number of other people were missing after the blast, which occurred shortly after 4 p.m. CT about three miles northeast of the town of Darrouzett.

"It's very rural," said sheriff's spokeswoman Vickie Nelson.

Several counties sent fire equipment to the site, said City Secretary Marybeth Robbins, who heard the explosion from more than a mile away. "They're going to have to figure out how to turn the gas off," she said.

She described Darrouzett as an oil, gas and ranching town of about 300 residents in the Panhandle.

Tuesday's explosion came a day after a 36-inch underground natural gas pipeline in Johnson County, Texas, 300 miles south-southeast of Darrouzett, burst into flames as construction work was being carried out nearby. One person died, and a number of others were hurt.
