View Full Version : About So Called General Discussion!

In the Topic General Discussion there is a definition: Feel free to talk about anything and everything in this board. My question why are there so many "MOVED" Threads? I understand that there are other Topic that might specialize in the type of information discussed... however the General Discussion area is an area where anything (according to the description) can be discussed... by moving a topic to a sub forum makes the post less visible and therefor less discussed.
More people frequent the General Discussion area than any other area here at GSUS so moving a thread while administratively expedient... it may not be good for discussion. Just my 2 cents... pre 82

I think this thread should be moved to the politics category. ;D

Nope, it should be moved to Board Communications. ;)
Celtic Rogue, you are right, a lot of people first go to the General Discussion category first, but there are some people (like me) who go to the recent unread posts. So to us, it really wouldn't matter what category you put your thread in, we would still see it.
I get a little perturbed when something is moved, but I do like having a clean house to come home to.

I do what k-os does..
and I also agree that even then it when I see something "moved" I probably won't follow it.

This is exactly why, in general, things shouldn't be moved around so much in my opinion.

I think we should have another sub-forum dedicated to discussing only misplaced and moved posts.

Here is an idea, moderators don't move a thread to its proper destination until the thread dies out. I can see the benefit of having a well structured library of subjects, but by moving a thread out of the general discussion area prematurely, a lot of the discussion is killed, since many posters don't tend to go outside of GD. Wait to move it until it is on the second page of GD.

...just kidding! I know not everyone uses the "unread posts" feature, and I can understand the frustration with too many moved threads, so I'll bring this up with the rest of the mods and we'll try to do better. I think Neuro has a good solution, that's what I'll start doing.

I can't speak for the other moderators, I can only give my reasons.
Sometimes a thread is posted that so obviously belongs in another section (preparedness, numimatics, etc.) that it's a "no brainer" to move it there. Yesterday, for instance, 3 threads were posted dealing with preparedness topics (one about mason jars, one about stocking up on seafood, and a third one I can't recall right offhand...), so after allowing them an hour or so in general discussion, I moved them to the preparedness section.
For those who are upset that their thread might be moved, remember this: General Discussion is such a high-traffic area of the forum that your post will very quickly move to the third, fourth, etc. page until it's not even easily findable any more with searching. Many of the other forum sections are lower traffic, so in the long run your thread will have more views and activity.
Don't know if this answers many of your questions or not... just trying to reply.

Thanks Gaillo but my topic wasn't really about mason jars persay, it was more about was it a social no-no to ask about getting items from a house for sale, that we were shown, but had no intention of buying because it didn't fit our needs. Mason jars just happened to be the item in question that is why I placed it in GD.
That said, I got my answer so you can leave it there. Just pointing out it wasn't really about mason jars...

That's exactly what I was thinking when it got moved. The subject was what is or is not tacky not mason jars.

Yeah, and my thread about wood fired cars wasn't really a Preparedness topic because it wasn't a how to do...just a general discussion about the history and current interest in wood fired cars :]

Gaillo, the one that you don't "remember" is the one with the link from TB2000 by yours trully........I knew that it was going to be moved so that I don't mind to much.........but, people come here first (as I do) and almost never go to the other sites (as I do).......I do go once in a while to see what is going on but don't post.

I just use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the top right. Shows me everything new.
Problem (?) solved.

Not sure if this software can do it, when I mod or move a post I leave it in the original area and copy it to the correct area so it doesn't get lost. When it dies out then I forget it, when I look for that post I go to the correct topic and its there, kinda like archiving good posts.

Thanks Madfranks for considering this idea. It gave me a laugh when it said the thread was moved. Hilarious!
