Authorities raid Sizzler restaurants in Phoenix

Jun 12, 10:45 PM (ET)

PHOENIX (AP) - Sheriff's deputies raided two Sizzler steak house restaurants in Phoenix on Saturday, arresting nine employees who are suspected of being illegal immigrants and using fraudulent documents to get jobs.

The raids were part of a yearlong investigation into whether the operators of the two Sizzler locations broke a civil law by knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, Maricopa County Sheriff's Office Lt. Brian Lee said in a statement.

Deputies were looking for 23 suspects wanted for identity theft, Lee said. Authorities believe one of the suspects was deported three times and has been hired back by Sizzler each time he returned.

The sheriff's office received a tip from a former Sizzler manager who claimed he had been fired for his refusal to hire employees without the proper documents, Lee said.

"This is another example of a case where desperately needed jobs are being occupied by illegal aliens who have disregarded our laws and our borders," Sheriff Joe Arpaio said in the statement.

Arpaio, known for pushing the bounds for how local law enforcement agencies can confront illegal immigration, frequently raids workplaces in the greater Phoenix area for people in the U.S. illegally.

A message left at one of the two restaurants wasn't immediately returned Saturday afternoon. A manager at the other restaurant declined to provide his name and publicly comment on the raid.

I like it!
So if one illegal is known to be on the premises, sheriff Joe has the right to check them all out.
Good to go, get-em Joe!

The property of the restaurants, buildings and land included, should be permanently seized via civil forfeiture. That would put an abrupt end to hiring illegals.

I like half of your idea!
Prisoners are the property of the state.
Illegal's should get a bus ticket, nothing more.

Maybe a bus ticket the First time, after that, incarcerate them in the tent-city, stationary bikes attached to generators to create their own electricity, make 'em plant a garden to grow their own food

I'll NEVER understand why McCain never did much at all to stem the tide or address the illegal immigrant problem in the state He represents

Is there a penalty for hiring illegals? It's easy to see how an illegal would get an under-the-table job raking leaves. But there should be stiff penalties/punishment for hiring illegal immigrants.

Because like most politicians, he does not represent his state, he represents himself only. His PR people told him that he would lose votes if he was harsh on illegal immigration. Simple as that.

For health reasons people should not eat at this restaurant or any franchise restaurant in the southwest from now on. The remaining employees who don't get popped are probably spitting in the food. Or worse.

Won't happen. This does not create an excuse to print money. Obama needs to hire 100,000+ at $25/hr. to clean the shore.

Yes, I know,......... it's both disgusting and sad that the ones that are voted into office care not about the people they're suppose to represent

Is there a penalty for hiring illegals?

There is the vague wording on the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form that reads: "l attest, under penalty of perjury, that to the best of my knowledge, this employee is eligible to work in the United States, and if the employee presented
document(s), the document(s) l have examined appear to be genuine and to relate to the individual. "

I haven't seen an actual penalty stated anywhere on the form . . . I think it's planned that way.
