GULF OF MEXICO – One of two one-ton masses of tarball material recovered south of Perdido Pass, Fla., by the crew of the lift boat Sailfish, a Vessel of Opportunity working in the largest oil spill response in U.S. history, on Saturday, June 11, 2010. Photo by Petty Officer 3rd Class John Walker, USCG.

Damn. How long could you heat your house with that thing?

Can someone describe what we're looking at... what is it caught in?

It looks like boom. Would this stuff float @ 0-2 in water depth?

unsure what the density of tar is, but I am guessing that is about half the size of a small car?

maybe 5 feet+ across

unsure on the thickness

one of the concerns I have not heard mentioned is that the refiners use a lot of water

the refiners sit near the ocean, on rivers

there is some concern if the oil gets into the estuaries, and back channels, the refineries will shut down.

Desalination plants in Florida are an issue also. Nuclear plants are another concern

In its May 12 situation report on the BP oil spill, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) noted that there was a risk to “a number of power plants” that draw cooling water directly from the Gulf of Mexico or adjacent salt water sources. “If the water supply for these facilities becomes contaminated with oil, cooling water systems could be damaged,” the report said.

According to these sources, there is much more at stake for Florida residents than fouled beaches and dead marine life. When BP's oil hits the coast of Florida, it may become an economic disaster of epic proportion.

Why does everyone believe something so readily that was posted on a Department of Homeland Security website?

If it's doom, we eat it up, no matter what the source. ;)

I live in Pensacola, Perdido is just a few miles west of here. I've been getting out to the beach a lot recently to keep an eye on things. So far it's just the very occasional pea sized tarball here but that's subject to change any time. Here are a few local pictures taken over the last week.

Sorry bout shot 3, totally gratuitous---

Those are sting rays in the water in the last shot.

And it's but a drop compared to what has been spilled.

There's about 275 gallons of oil in a ton, and there's been about 50 million gallons leaked. So there's been enough oil leaked to make about 175,000 of those tarballs. Alas.

Holy mackerel.

Though I suppose if she didn't have that pretty face and that perfect body, she probably wouldn't be much to look at.
