SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Emergency employees are working tirelessly to clean up the wildlife affected by this weekend's oil spill, but what are the possible long term costs of the spill?

Salt lake city officials have assured residents that drinking water has not been affected by the spill, yet the executive director of the Utah Rivers Council, Zach Frankel, says groundwater aquifers may have been contaminated by the spill.

"That can take several years for oil to enter the groundwater," said Frankel, "so if someone finds oil in an aquifer three years from now, how do we know it didn't come from this spill?"

Chevron officials have assured the public the company will see the clean up all the way through, even if it takes months.

"Again I would like to emphasize that we are fully responsible for any impact on the community, and we will be here to see it through the end."

Frankel says the public needs to hold chevron to that promise.

"What clean up means, needs to be carefully defined by the public before we can really make predictions on how long its going to take," said Frankel.

The Clean Water Act holds a company accountable for $1,100 a barrel, which in this case at 500 barrel's spilled, doesn't nearly cover the cost in local emergency personnel and supplies.

"Why should tax payers be asked to pay the cost of clean up?" asked Frankel. "Tax payers didn't cause this, Chevron did."

Frankel says he's looking forward to a public, transparent process, and believes Chevron will clean up every last drop of oil.

He says forums like Monday night's town hall meeting will assure that transparency.

Not sure if anyone posted about this one yet but I just heard about it. This sure doesn't help the "drill baby drill" crowd too much.
