Yesterday, Monday, the courthouse where he was to be arraigned received an envelope with "white powder," canceling his arraignment due to courthouse closure. (presumably the envelope was put in the mail on Saturday)

Now, today, his car was rigged as a car bomb, and dropped off at a quick lube joint.

A bomb squad has removed an apparent explosive device from a car registered to Edgar Steele, the North Idaho man facing charges he arranged to hire someone to kill his wife and mother-in-law.

The black 2004 Mitsubishi Endeavor Limited pulled into the Fast Lane Quick Lube at West Bosanko Avenue and U.S. Highway 95 in Coeur d’Alene, at about 12:30 p.m.

A worker saw what appeared to be an explosive device under the car, removed the vehicle from the shop bay and called police, prompting an evacuation of nearby businesses and the closure of Highway 95. The highway since has reopened.

Steele is making a first appearance in federal court in Coeur d’Alene this afternoon after he was arrested Friday in the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

He is the attorney who unsuccessfully defended the Aryan Nations in the landmark 2000 case that bankrupted the racist organization.

A bomb squad unit from Spokane is on the scene, said Lt. Jay Heintz of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department.

Highway 95 was closed in both directions while the bomb squad removed the device.

Bosanko remains closed from Highway 95 west to North Fruitland Lane. A Numerica Credit Union branch across Bosanko was closed, as was a car wash and coffee stand just west of the lube shop.

Steele had been scheduled to appear Monday in U.S. District Court, but the hearing was delayed until today after the U.S. attorney’s office in the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene received a letter containing a suspicious white powder and was evacuated. Federal offices in Spokane and Bellevue received similar deliveries, and investigators concluded the powder was not dangerous.

Steele, 64, was arrested Friday at his Sagle, Idaho, home following an investigation last week conducted by the North Idaho Violent Crime Task Force, said Traci Whelan, an assistant U.S. attorney.

The man Steele allegedly hired to murder the women met with the FBI on Wednesday and told agents about the plot. The man said Steele had discussed a list of people he wanted dead, including his wife and her mother.

A probable-cause affidavit said the witness was supposed to kill the women Friday in a car crash meant to look like an accident, the newspaper reported. Agents concealed a device on the informant and recorded Steele planning the murders, the affidavit said.

Steele has been charged with using interstate facilities for murder-for-hire. The maximum penalty is 10 years in prison, possibly accompanied by a fine. If personal injury had resulted, the penalty rises to a maximum of 20 years; if someone had died, the crime is punishable by death or life imprisonment.

Steele represented the Aryan Nations and its founder, Richard Butler, in the case that returned a $6.3 million verdict bankrupting the organization. In 2004, Steele was a featured speaker at a gathering of people who believe the Holocaust never occurred. He called the claim that six million Jews died in World War II at the hands of Adolf Hitler a “pattern of lies.�

Steele regularly espouses anti-Semitic and racist views on his website, ConspiracyPenPal.com. On May 21, for example, he mused about whether he should finish writing a book about “Jews and their role in the destruction of Western civilization, the spectacle of which is now on view throughout the world.�

He also called for guillotines to be erected across the country “as the French did two centuries ago, with the bankers, politicians and other establishment mainstays being cycled through them.� He finishes the entry by saying, “so many to offend, so little time and with such vitriol that has built up within me of late. That was EXACTLY my thought.

I don't think the driver is Cyndi Steele. But intended to appear to be so. Whether Ed is innocent or guilty, there is no way that Cyndi would be getting an oil change TODAY - she'd either be supporting her husband in any way she could, or hiding in fear, respectively. She doesn't want to talk to the media...so the worst way to succeed with that would be to go out in public with a car registered to the accused!

COEUR D'ALENE -- A suspicious device has been found on a car owned by Edgar and Cyndi Steele when a woman brought the car to the Fast Lane Quik Lube on Government Way in Coeur d’Alene.

Steele was arrested last week for attempting to hire a hit man to kill his wife and mother-in-law; he had wanted it to look like they were killed in a car crash, according to court documents obtained by KXLY from the Idaho Statesman.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department reports that a woman showed up at the Fast Lane Quik Lube, located at 484 West Bosanko Avenue, for an oil change. Mechanics at the business identified that woman as Cyndi Steele, Edgar Steele's wife. As mechanics were working to remove the oil plug they noticed a suspicious device underneath the car. They said that as soon as they found the device Cyndi became extremely concerned and told the mechanics to get out.

The mechanics pushed the vehicle out of the business and called police. In turn the Spokane County Bomb Squad was called in to check the device on the car and aid in securing it.

After a few minutes, eyewitnesses say that Cyndi began to cry hysterically. A short while later her son came and told the mechanics they had received some death threats but nothing like this incident. The Steeles left with police officers a short time later.

The vehicle with the suspicious device underneath it was a Mitsubishi Endeavor with Idaho license plates; the make, model and license plate of that Endeavor match a vehicle owned by the Steeles.

Edgar Steele was arrested last week after he had solicited a long-time acquaintance to kill his wife Cyndi and his mother-in-law.

Steele, according to court documents, wanted his wife and mother-in-law killed in a car crash last Friday while his wife visited her mother in Oregon. Those documents say he wanted their deaths to look like an accident.

COEUR D'ALENE -- A car at a Coeur d'Alene Quick Lube that had a suspicious device underneath it Tuesday belongs to a local attorney charged with murder-for-hire.

Police closed the Fast Lane Quick Lube at Highway 95 and Bosanko around 12:30 p.m. after a suspicious device was found underneath a vehicle.

Officers say a customer dropped off the black Mitsubishi SUV earlier today for an oil change. Quick Lube employees found what they thought may be an explosive beneath the vehicle and called authorities.

The license plates on the SUV match records that show the vehicle belongs to Edgar Steele, a local attorney who formerly represented the Aryan Nations.

Steele appeared in federal court on murder-for-hire charges just hours after the device was found. Representing himself in court, he pleaded not guilty but indicated he plans to get outside counsel.

Steele is accused of paying a man $500, allegedly to kill his wife and mother-in-law. Investigators say Steele promised $100,000 more when the insurance settlement came through.

In court, Steele requested to be released on his own recognizance, saying he is not a flight risk. The prosecution contended by citing overwhelming evidence of a threat to the community, and mentioned what transpired at the Quick Lube. A judge denied Steele's request.

The Spokane County Bomb Squad used a robot to remove the device from the SUV and detonate it around 4:15 p.m. It is unknown if the device was an explosive.

The SUV was towed away from the scene, as well as an additional vehicle that also belongs to Steele.

Highway 95 was closed while the Bomb Squad investigated but it has since been reopened.

Several years ago I was attending a University in the Northwest. While I was doing so I received several of Edgar Steele’s Conspiracy pen pal missives. I still read them, I just go to his website at http://www.conspiracypenpal.com rather than receive them as an email. In any case, during that time I “acquired,� one of Mr. Steele’s better known sayings and kind of “adopted,� it as my own. My essay, “It’s the Jews Stupid,� was not as original as I thought when I wrote it. Mr. Steele wrote an excellent essay several years ago with the same title, and it seems that I must have liked it so much that I began to use the phrase, “It’s the Jews Stupid,� and embraced it as my own. In any case, this statement, which will precede my essay on my blog site from this moment on is my attempt to remedy this usurpation of his prose/ideas and to give him the attribution he deserves. Mr. Steele was very kind about all this, I wrote him and he asked if I was the one that had written an essay with the same title as his. I realized at that point what must have happened, i.e. I read his essay in 2004 and accidentally appropriated his title. I apologized and he graciously accepted my apology. I highly recommend his essay “It’s the Jews Stupid,� it is an excellent expose as to how our friends the Jews conduct themselves in this day and age and how we Goyim allow them to get away with their bad behavior.

Steele’s wife and son were at the federal courthouse in Coeur d’Alene about 4:30 p.m. for his first court appearance, where he asked to be released while awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. The judge declined and ordered Steele not to contact his mother-in-law and wife.

Steele called the order “an unconscionable� assault on his marriage and asked Dale to consult Steele’s wife and son before ruling, saying they “are in no danger from me.

“They know me far better than the U.S. government does,� Steele said. “The United States government is doing everything in its power to try to drive a wedge between me and my wife.�

COEUR d’ALENE � A grand jury indictment on Tuesday was returned in U.S. District Court here against an attorney known for representing hate groups like the Aryan Nations, setting the stage for a high-profile murder-for-hire trial.

The attorney, 64-year-old Edgar J. Steele, is accused of hiring a hit man to kill Steele’s wife, 53-year-old Cyndi Steele and her mother.

Edgar Steele was arrested at his Sagle home Friday, and made his first appearance in federal court Tuesday in front of Judge Candy W. Dale. Dale said the grand jury decided on one count of “use of interstate commerce facilities in the commission for murder-for-hire.�

If found guilty, it carries a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, Dale said.

Steele acted as his own attorney Tuesday, telling the court he remains a licensed attorney.

“My plea is absolutely, completely not guilty,� Steele told the court.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Traci Jo Whelan asked the court for no-contact orders to keep Steele from speaking with his wife and her mother. Cyndi Steele was in the courtroom throughout the hearing.

Dale granted the no-contact orders, despite Edgar Steele’s objections. He called it “an invasion of the marital state.�

The federal government is trying to “drive a wedge between my wife and myself.�

Steele, gesturing to his wife and son, who also was in court, said, “Ask if they have any fear of me.�

After the hearing, Cyndi Steele struck the lobby wall with her hand and was heard crying.

“I need to be allowed to talk to my husband,� she yelled. She also said she needed her vehicle. Her and the couple’s son were driven from the courthouse in a pickup truck without speaking with reporters waiting outside.

According to court records, now sealed by the court, Steele offered to pay a hit man up to $125,000 to kill his wife and mother-in-law in a car crash that would be meant to look like an accident. The documents say a concealed recording device captured Steele ordering the hit.

Also Tuesday, Steele told the court he had no money after federal agents “seized our life savings last week� when he was arrested.

He asked for and received a federal public defender. Dale found that, at least for now, Steele did not appear to have the money needed to pay for legal counsel, based on information he provided Tuesday.

Steele said he only wanted to represent himself Tuesday.

Steele is currently in federal custody, and is being held at the Kootenai County jail. He was in street clothes in court.

Steele asked to be released pending a detention hearing scheduled for next Tuesday, June 22.

Whelan argued against it, saying Steele is a flight risk and a threat to the public and case witnesses.

Dale ordered him to remain detained until the hearing next week.

Steele had argued that he has no money to travel, has “substantial community ties,� and has health problems, including a recent open-heart surgery.

“I’m certainly no threat to jurors or witnesses,� he said. He offered to wear an ankle monitor if released.

Whelan said there’s “overwhelming evidence of danger to the community.�

She said, “This is a crime of violence.�

She also said the case continues to develop.

Steele’s first appearance was scheduled for Monday, but didn’t happen after the U.S. courthouse was closed down because of a suspicious mail scare. A piece of mail was found with a white powder, which turned out not to be hazardous.

Judge Dale scheduled a trial date in Steele’s case for Aug. 16, in front of Judge Lynn B. Winmill.

A man suspected of planting the pipe bomb that was discovered Tuesday as part of a murder-for-hire plot linked by authorities to the former Aryan Nations lawyer is in custody.

Larry Andrew Fairfax was taken into custody Tuesday night in Coeur d’Alene and is suspected of planting the pipe bomb that was found on Cyndi Steele’s SUV earlier, according to U.S. District Court documents filed today. Fairfax allegedly had been hired by the intended victim’s husband, Sagle attorney Edgar Steele, to plant the bomb, which was discovered during an oil change.

It’s unclear whether Fairfax is a second suspected contract killer linked to the murder-for-hire plot or the same unidentified person who first tipped authorities to the scheme last week, which led to Edgar Steele’s arrest on Friday. The alleged murder plot detailed in Steele’s arrest last week had a different timeline than the one outlined by Fairfax in Tuesday’s arrest.

Fairfax reportedly is cooperating with investigators and claimed in interviews that although he had planted the bomb, he had manipulated the fuse to malfunction. The bomb reportedly was planted May 30 because Cyndi Steele was planning to drive to Oregon to visit her mother the following day, and Edgar Steele wanted it to detonate and cause a fatal crash, according to the documents.

A second pipe bomb was confiscated by police that Fairfax claimed that he was supposed to plant on Edgar Steele’s vehicle, and which Edgar Steele would be able to detonate on his own car to provide an alibi in which it would appear that he and his wife had been targeted, the documents say.

Fairfax, also from Sagle, is facing federal charges of making and possessing bombs.

this reminds me a little of the Judi Bari/ Daryl Cherney case. they had a group called Redwood Summer that was successful in blocking some of the clear-cutting efforts of Texas companies like Maxxam. someone put a bomb under her VW bug, doing terrible damage to her pelvis & genitals - and she lived. i could only conclude after reading it, the FBI was involved in this, the FBI is definitely the bad guys here.

Did they move Ed to a military or Guantanamo-style facility so he can't submit a Habeas Corpus to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals? A U.S. District Court jury in Chicago has convicted white supremacist leader Matt Hale for soliciting the murder of a federal judge.

Hale, 32, leader and self-proclaimed "Pontifex Maximus" of the virulently racist and anti-Semitic Creativity Movement (formerly known as the World Church of the Creator), was found guilty on April 26, 2004, of one count of solicitation of murder and three counts of obstruction of justice. He was acquitted of a second count of solicitation of murder.

During the trial, jurors heard recorded conversations of Hale trying to persuade FBI informant Anthony Evola, who acted as Hale's bodyguard, to kill Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow. Jon Fox, a former Hale follower, also testified that Hale asked him to kill the judge who had presided over a trademark infringement case involving Hale's group. Hale's group was ordered by Judge Lefko to stop using its name, to give up its Web addresses, to turn over all printed material bearing its name and to pay a fine of $1,000 for each day it continued to violate the court decision.

Opole, Poland, June 16, 2010 -- The body of a former Polish history professor, Dariusz Ratajczak, convicted by a Polish court in 2002 of claiming that mass gassings of human beings in Auschwitz-Birkenau was impossible, has been found dead in a shopping center parking lot in the western Polish city of Opole.

Prof. Ratajczak was suspended in April 1999 from his teaching post at Opole University's Historical Institute after state prosecutors opened an investigation into the publication of his book Tematy niebezpieczne ("Dangerous Themes").

"The body, which was severely decomposed, has been identified by Ratajczak's family, so additional DNA tests will not have to be carried out," says Lidia Sieradzka from the Prosecutor's Office in Opole.

Judging by the state of the body and recent high temperatures, the man has been dead for up to two weeks, say police. Security guards at the Karolinka shopping centre claim, however, that the historian's Renault Kangoo was left at the car park on the same day, June 11, that it was discovered. In the car police found documents which belonged to 48-year-old revisionist historian Ratajczak. Recordings from CCTV are being examined.

The cause of Ratajczak's death remains uncertain. Police think it is unlikely that he was murdered because it is alleged that no injuries were found on the body during the autopsy.

Police established that the historian, who had problems finding employment in Poland, planned to go to Holland or Belgium to work in a company to do menial labor. For that purpose he acquired a Renault Kangoo automobile, in which his body was found stuffed between the front and rear seats. It is reported that he may have been living in his car. He worked at odd jobs for food.

In 2000, Dariusz Ratajczak was fired from the University of Opole, where he worked for eleven years, and banned from teaching at other universities for three years after the publication of Tematy niebezpieczne, in which he claimed that it was not scientifically possible to kill millions of people in alleged Auschwitz death camp gas chambers.

Earlier in 1999, a Polish court found Ratajczak guilty of "public denial" of German war crimes – which is against the law in Poland – but because the book was self-published with a print run of only 260 copies it was not thought to be able to create a "social annoyance" and he was not punished. In his defense, Prof. Ratajczak told the court that his book was merely a survey of many dissenting views on the "Holocaust," including revisionist works by British historian David Irving and others. "Holocaust denial" is a crime in Poland, Germany, Hungary, France, Switzerland and Austria.

Mr. Ratajczak is survived by a son and a daughter.

“The trial gave him a lot of clout in extremist circles because the Aryan Nations was such a revered group,� said Marilyn Mayo, director of right-wing research at the Anti-Defamation League, a civil rights group that monitors anti-Semitism. “For a while, he rode on that wave.�

Steele, who is licensed to practice law in Idaho and Washington, became a featured speaker at extremist events, including a gathering of Holocaust deniers in 2004, and wrote a self-published book that same year called “Defensive Racism,� which he sells on the Internet. But his work has been largely focused on his website; the federal raid at his home June 11 came more than a year after his last major publicized speaking event.

The purpose of the raid – to gather evidence regarding an allegation that Steele paid a man to murder his wife and mother-in-law – shocked groups that have tracked him for years.

“He’s been ranting, especially about the Jews, for some time … but to see him accused of trying to blow up his wife and mother-in-law?� said Heidi Berich, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, a nonprofit organization that tracks extremist groups and filed the 2000 lawsuit against the Aryans. She said while Steele didn’t bring his wife to speaking events, he often wrote about her as his best friend.

“We were in shock here,� Berich said.

Divorce petition dismissed

Edgar Steele served in the Coast Guard, got a master’s degree in business and was an accountant in San Francisco before graduating from UCLA’s law school in 1982. He married Cyndi Kunzman in San Mateo, Calif., in 1985.

The Steeles have owned a home on Talache Road, just east of Shepherd Lake, since 1996. It’s currently valued at about $364,000. They have two children, ages 22 and 20, and Edgar Steele adopted his wife’s 28-year-old daughter from a previous marriage.

Decade-old court documents show their marriage struggled.

Cyndi Steele, who operates a horse farm on the couple’s property, filed for divorce in June 2000, alleging her husband “misrepresented his marital status and eligibility� in online dating profiles “with the sole intention of meeting women� in San Mateo, where he maintained a law office.

But the case was dismissed two months later and the couple remained married. In July of that same year, Steele took over defense in a civil lawsuit filed against the Aryan Nations by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Though he lost the historic trial, Steele “stuck his neck out for Butler. In white supremacist circles, he’s seen as a hero,� Berich said.

Butler founded the Aryan Nations and was one of the country’s most influential racists until his death in 2004.

When Steele took over the group’s defense, he said it wasn’t because he shared Butler’s beliefs, but because he believed the case was about free speech. He sued The Spokesman-Review over an article he said implied otherwise.

The Idaho Supreme Court dismissed the lawsuit in 2003.

By then, Steele had made his views clear.

“It was after the Aryan Nations trial that Steele really became very open with his own anti-Semitic views,� said Mayo, of the Anti-Defamation League.

‘I’m not ashamed’

In 2004, Steele spoke at a Holocaust denial conference in Sacramento, Calif., saying the claim that 6 million Jews died in World War II at the hands of Adolf Hitler is based on “a pattern of lies.� The conference was sponsored by the National Institute for Historical Review, an anti-Semitic group.

“I don’t want to pull my punches anymore,� Steele told the audience. “I’m not ashamed.�

On his website, Steele says he devotes his “colorful and lively ranting� to “politically incorrect issues� and that he devotes his law practice to “cases that test the limits of constitutional law on behalf of politically incorrect clients.�

Before the Aryan Nations trial, Steele worked on a controversial tabloid targeting some incumbents just before the 1998 elections in Bonner County. He was involved with several high-profile cases after the trial, including the case of a North Idaho family, the McGuckins, who used guns and dogs to guard themselves from authorities trying to take five children from the home in 2001. He also represented an Oregon couple accused of kidnapping three of their children from social workers at gunpoint and taking them to Montana.

“I have defended and provide legal advice to probably more of the politically incorrect than has any other attorney in America today,� Steele said in a May 2009 essay available on his website. “Always, I have required that they be fundamentally decent people … and always they must be innocent, regardless of how things might eventually turn out in court.�

Steele’s last major publicity came in 2005, when he appeared on national news talk shows defending two young girls in a music group called Prussian Blue, which promoted white supremacy.

His last speaking engagement was at a militia and Constitution convention in Georgia called the Jekyll Island Project in May 2009, but he “was a bit of an oddball in the sense that he was the only serious racist and anti-Semite,� said Berich, of the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Steele’s online writings say he planned to run for governor of Idaho in 2010 but was angry with the Constitution Party for rejecting him.

“He sort of progressively got angrier and more anti-Semitic over time,� Berich said. “I don’t know if he was starting to go off the rails with all this hatred. It seems like he was on a slippery, downhill slope after losing the trial.�

Murder plot investigation unfolds

Steele’s law licenses in Oregon and California have expired, according to state bar records.

His last essay appeared on his website May 21; in it, he said he’d decided against running for Idaho governor.

At that same time, federal agents allege, he was plotting with a man to kill Cyndi Steele, 53, and her mother in a staged car accident he hoped would give him a hefty insurance payout. Employees at a Coeur d’Alene auto shop found a pipe bomb under Cyndi Steele’s SUV during an oil change on Tuesday.

According to court documents, Larry A. Fairfax, 49, told police he’d rigged the pipe bomb in such a way that it would malfunction; he said he was to put another pipe bomb on Edgar Steele’s car that wouldn’t detonate; then Steele would claim both he and his wife were targeted.

It’s been reported that Fairfax apparently tipped authorities to Steele’s alleged plot but didn’t tell them of the explosive he’d already planted. Fairfax, of Sagle, is due in U.S. District Court in Coeur d’Alene on Monday for a hearing to decide if he should remain in federal custody pending trial.

Steele’s motive for the alleged murder plot is unclear. His mother-in-law, reached at her home in Oregon City, Ore., declined to comment other than to say, “Please keep an open mind.�

Steele, who described himself as “frail� and “elderly� and said he’s had four surgeries in the past six months, including open heart surgery, vehemently denied the charge in his first court appearance Tuesday. He served as his own attorney and said he was worried he couldn’t afford private counsel because “the United States government seized our life savings� during the raid June 10.

Court documents allege Steele was to pay $25,000 for the murders, then $100,000 if an insurance claim paid out. FBI agents believe he already paid $400 to cover travel expenses to Oregon City. Fairfax told police he’d already staked out the area.

Steele told an informant “to make sure that they were dead after the accident because Edgar Steele did not want to take care of a paraplegic� and promised to compensate the informant’s family if he got caught, according to an affidavit prepared by the FBI.

He’s been assigned a public defender and is due in court again on Tuesday to decide if he should remain in custody before trial, which is scheduled for August.

Steele unsuccessfully argued last week for his release, saying he’s not a flight risk and disputing an apparent claim in sealed bail review recommendations that his writings show he would flee prosecution.

He said his writings show just the opposite, that he will stand for what he believes in and respects “the American way.�

He called the case “a very emotional situation for me.�

I received the following comment on my blog regarding the case.

Dear Sir or Madame,

I say these things in honor of the Mr. Edgar J. Steele family. I say with profound gratitude that Mr. and Mrs. Steele have welcomed me into their home, offered me food, comfort, and pro bono legal advice. Mr. Steele even forgave me when I railed out at him online regarding his essays on the homosexual question, which in fact, are quite accurate in my view. Never have I had any indication that he would be so imbalanced as to pay some Booger Eating Moron (BEM) $400 to off his wife and mother in law.

Mr. Steele is obviously deeply in love with his beautiful wife and I find no truth in this plot. Suppose that he did want to kill some people. I can assure you that Mr. Steele has far more intellectual capacity than to plant a pipebomb under Mrs. Steele's SUV where it would not even reach a flash point hot enough to detonate. As Patrick Henry "smelt a rat" when he refused to sign the United States Constitution, so do I smell the same rat in this scheme.

The issue at hand is one of transparency. I have called Kootenai County Jail and they told me that Mr. Steele was in Bonner County Jail. I have called Bonner County Jail and they told me he was in Spokane. I called Geiger, Airway Heights and Spokane County Jail and they told me he was not there. His whereabouts should be a public record, yet it is not. This makes me livid.

This is a case of kicking a man when he is down. Mr. Steele suffered a nearly fatal aortic embolism recently and has struggled this past year. He has not even been writing his Nickel Rants. None of this makes any sense to me, but then again, according to many, I haven't much sense.

Whether or not there is any iota of truth in this alleged "murder for hire" plot, the fact remains that I offer my prayers and material support to the Steele family. Those who do not after the incalculable resources his family has spent on others is a yellow bellied deserter. May Mr. Steele prevail.
