It is actually easier than this stupid containment attempt they made.
I know to stop this thing and it is real easy. I can't believe they let it go this long!!!
They need to make an umbrella cap that they drive down the well after cutting clean the old riser pipe. Once the umbrella in its closed position is driven to the end of the 18,000 foot well, it opens and pulls back sealing the well at the source.
The umbrella and pipe must be less than 3" in diameter in the closed position in order for it to be forced with against the oil flow. It will take alot of force to do this.
Assuming the oil pressure at the reservoir is 20,000 psi, and worst case- the closed umbrella cap is 3" diameter, that is a 7 square inch surface area..... 140,000 pounds of force. That is 70 tons behind that pipe driving it down. A portion of that weight will largely be from its own mass.
It is possible with this method to cap the well, fix it, and actually make it safely productive.
