Every so often we hear one of these end-of-the-world stories. There's a meteor that's going to hit the earth, or the sun's going to lose its gravitational pull. And generally we can ignore them because they're the calculator speculations of some shed-scientist crackpot.

Today we heard another: The earth is going to be hit by a barrage of solar flares in 2013 when the sun's magnetic energy cycle coincides with its 11-year peak in super-powered-sunspot activity -- but this time it wasn't a maverick amateur making the predictions. It was freakin' NASA.

Professor Richard Harrison of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire told the U.K.'s Metro, "The sun is now waking up. It's been very inactive, but there's a lot of debate about how dramatic its waking up will be. It's not scaremongering."

We're sure it's not, Richard. Frankly, we're going to start stockpiling now.

If that happens it would only mean no more phone, comp, radar or anything electronic........to some that would be "the end of the world" but to me that would complete my world.

First post of the day.........good morning to one and all.

Not the end of the world . . . the end of the electronic world. We'd be brought back to simpler times, which is the same scenario many of has have been preparing for anyway.

The other option is that the sun doesn't wake up in this solar cycle... This would lead to extremely cold weather for at least a couple of decades, with mass starvation.

Mass starvation will occur with a blowing out of the electronic infrastructure, probably quicker though, but with a higher chance of a quick recovery...

Thinking about it though, I am not sure of a quicker recovery either. Earth will descend into a previously unseen k-os, following the collapse of everything electronic... Probably no recovery anytime soon!

Yup! We have destroyed all the 1800's tech. There are no folks left that do math on paper. No steel mills to cast needed parts for plows etc.

No horses to pull the plows. 90% population will die off over a 10 year period. North America will be covered in plant killing oil. The planet is

OMG! It may be just like 2001 (the last solar cycle peak) all over again!!!!!!!!

(yes the recent quiet has been unusual)

Maybe TPTB counted on the solar storms then, and when nothing happened they decided to trigger the 9/11 attacks...

Don't worry about things that you cannot control because all that you will be doing is to get sick and consentrate on those that you can........if it happens it happens and if not then not.

Holy sheit!. Would disconect this, but on speaking with my father (life time engineer, works with EMP and how to counter in DCA. He was mentioning a couple months back that we would be having another bad winter ( we got dumped on with snow) this coming year and to make sure my trucks were ready. It all had to do with the solar flares and tracking the etc.I think or their affect on el nino etc. Wish I paid more attention. I just did my usual yeah, ok. But now I am wondering.
