We picked about 4 cups worth, we're going to try two different pie recipes

The first one:

BLACK RASPBERRY CREAM PIE

1 (8 inch) pie shell
3/4 c. sugar
4 tbsp. flour
1 c. evaporated milk
3/4 c. skim milk
1 c. black raspberries, washed and drained

Mix sugar and flour together in a 2-quart saucepan. Pour evaporated milk and skim milk into the sugar-flour mixture, while stirring. Heat mixture over medium heat until it just reaches the boiling point. Stir constantly to prevent sticking. Remove from heat.

Place drained raspberries in bottom of 8-inch pie shell in an even layer. Pour hot cream mixture over the berries. bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is set.

and the second:

BLACK RASPBERRY PIE

3 c. black raspberries

CRUMB TOPPING:

1/4 c. butter
3/4 c. flour
3/4 - 1 c. sugar
1/4 tsp. cinnamon

Combine your topping ingredients until crumbly, then in a 9" unbaked pie shell, put 1/2 of the raspberries in the bottom of the shell. Spread half of the crumb topping over them, then put the rest of the ingredients and finish out with the crumb topping. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 minutes then 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes.

I'll be sure to let you know how they turn out! Get out there and pick some berries!! (they're ripe in WV anyways!)

Well just to clarify these are definitely black RASPBERRIES.

Blackberries = Rubus allegheniensis
Black Raspberries = Rubus occidentalis

The two are very similar but black raspberries have a distinct flavor. I know things have different names depending on where one lives, but there is a difference.

Those look delicious. I think I would just make a smoothie out of them. Black raspberries are rated highly for anti-oxidants, and making a pie will destroy a lot of that (of course it will taste fantastic).

Here are some representative numbers (http://www.acai-berry.tv/orac_graph.html) (ORAC TE-equiv./gram for fresh fruit):

Raspberry (red)=49
Red Wine(Cab Sauv)= 50
Blackberry=53
Bueberry=65
Black Raspberry=78 (different source (http://www.oregon-berries.com/common/docs/datasheets/PROC_BR.pdf))
Black Currant=80
Cranberry=96
Elderberry=140
Chokeberry=160
acai fruit=160

Yes they do have loads of antioxidants, there were plenty of red berries still on the brambles so we plan on going back in a week or so for round two once they ripen up a bit. These were NOT on our property, we picked them at the local rest stop of all places. We were out geocaching last night and the maintenance man told us if we had a container that there were "loads" of them "back that way" and pointed the way. We found them last night but had no containers so we went back tonight and got them. A rest stop is public land if I'm not mistaken so I don't feel like I "stole" them. Plus the maintenance guy told us to get them yesterday anyways!

Pie #1 is done, this is the Black Raspberry Cream Pie. We need to let it cool and setup before we try it. I'll most likely have a piece before bed tonight!

Maybe on round 2 of the picking we'll turn them into smoothies. It will be better for my diet anyways if I eat them that way!
