Talk about the big one that got away.
Ryan Danoff was fishing with two friends about four miles off Hollywood beach Sunday when he spied what appeared to be a mast on the horizon.
Funny thing: There was no boat underneath it.
Danoff, a Fort Lauderdale fish farmer who's on the water at least three days a week, aimed his 31-foot center console Fishy Business at the mysterious upright and found himself eye to eye with a periscope.
"It was crazy," he said. "If it was just myself out there I wouldn't believe what I saw."
Danoff moved closer. "It took off," he said. Very fast, about 20 knots. The periscope sank beneath the waves, and whatever was below the surface blew its ballast, sending aloft a mighty hiccup of bubbles. After five minutes the sea lay once again undisturbed.
Danoff, 30, reported the episode to the Coast Guard. They said they'd get back to him, but never did.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Barry Bena said Danoff's information went to the proper authorities. "As of right now, they're still looking into it," he said.
So could it have been a Navy sub taking a peek at the beach? "It's kind of uncommon," Bena said. "But it's a definite possibility."

Very interesting, probably a sub.
Something similar happened me once. Spotted a mast like object in the distance, it disappeared than reappeared, so we changed course to check it out.
As we got closer, we identified it to be a killer whale. I didn't realize how large their dorsal fins are. A big male, he positioned himself between us and a small pod of females. His size was impressive, and made me nervous because he came within 20 feet of the boat.

...whatever the " official report" is, believe the opposite. i.e. if they say us gov sub , it means its foreign.

Like back in Cuba, I was in my five foot kayak made by may dad and bout seven to ten miles from the shore (no life vest) and about 20 fins started to swim around me going up and down and I started to say my prayers hahahahahah, and then on of them swam up to me and there was the face of a dolphin smiling at me......I forgot that sharks swim in a straight line and dolphins in a up and down motion.
And then going back home this guy from the shore called me and asked me to put this large hook with a big piece of meat as far as I could........after I did it I went back to ask what was he fishing for and he told me "There is a 25 foot shark somewhere around here".........I curse him out in seven languages and one more that I invented myself hahahahahahahah.
I picke up my kayak and walked the rest of the way home ;D, at the time I was about sixteen.

LOL and thanks........I have done a lot in life and it has been fun.......let me see if you like this next one..........
While on patrol duty in Rhodesia there was a sound about one hundred yards away from me, I hid in the bushes with my rifle at the ready.....after five minutes this two old men (over 80) and a kid of about 10 came walking by with a fat cow and a skinny cow....when they saw me they started to shake and cry, after a while the kid, who spoke some English, told me that their people were hungry and that's why they stole the cows........well, I let them go with the skinny cow and then I fired about 12 shots into the air and started walking back to the farm with the fat cow......the farmes and a couple of more guards meet me about half way and I told them that some terrs were stealing the cow and that I was able to rescue it..........the farmer gave me and extra $500.00 bonus which was about $580.00 in US currency hahahahahahahaha.
I was there for about two months and then I became an airplane observer going between Chipinga and Umtali, next to the Mozambique border.

That is your best post ever. When you said you were out in a kayak 7 to 10 miles from shore... I got to wondering.... is this the story of Ponce the illegal alien coming to Amerika?
So- you weren't fond of being a little shark bait?

Great story Ponce, to live life is to live...
Here's a fav of mine. I show up to the boat, groceries in hand, and see a 500lb sea lion next to the boat, blocking my way. So I set the groceries aside, and approach the lion. I get about 8 feet away, and he raises his head, extends his neck, and looks at me through one eye (as sea lions do).
Sizing me up. I jump up and down, rattling the dock, like a madman. The sea lion patiently waits until I'm done. Then, he pounds the dock with his weight, shaking things more than I did.
So, I start shifting my weight, side by side, and the momentum is moving the dock from left to right...the sea lion is patient, waiting for me to stop. Once I stop, the sea lion shifts his weight, side by side, moving the dock more that I. Mimicking me, but greater.
Well, I grab a boat hook, as a last resort, and start jabbing at the lion. He didn't want any of that. He let out a roar, so powerful, it would have shaked the ground....then, he ducked his head, and charged.
I dropped that hook and never looked back. Next thing I knew I was on a neighbors boat looking around, wondering what happened.
Man against beast, great stories.

To tell you the truth Spec I was kind of stupid.......my dad rented a beach house for the summer and being from a sugar mill I didn't know any better when I went way out there, I could barely see the coast and only the tallest hotels........the only real thing that now scares the hell out of me when I think about it is the fact that I didn't have a life preserver on...........life sucks.
There was a draw bridge with a clearance of about 25 feet under it but the guy ,as a joke, just to stop the traffic and open the bridge every time that I came by in my kayak, and he was veryyyyyyyyy serious about it, he never even smiled.

Great pictures, Ken. Thanks for sharing. Yeah the sea lions were always an added level of excitement. The little ones were OK though...
I had a small one, that made a home next to the boat...she'd look up at me with sleepy eyes, as I'd pet her upon the head.
I had a big one once. The big ones, when they'd sneeze or cough...not sure, but they would let out a brown sludge flying that was a bitch to clean off the boat. Hours of scrubbing. One big fella, at least had the courtesy of looking at me, in the eye, as he was about to sneeze....then looking away, and unloading on my neighbor's boat.
Hahaha. If there was a doggy treat he would have like, I would have given it to him. ;D
