CORNELIUS, NC (WBTV) - A man says he found oil inside his oysters while eating at a restaurant located north of Charlotte this weekend.

Matthew Robertson is fascinated at the thought that an oyster from the Gulf Coast that was possibly soaked in oil made it onto his dinner plate.

"I rubbed it on my napkin and I said 'Hey, Dad look, there's oil on my oysters,'" said Robertson.

He was so surprised at what he found, he kept one of the oysters to show our cameras.

WBTV reporter Sarah Batista noticed there was a black substance stuck to the inside of the oyster.

"That is definitely tar, that is not on oysters, "said Robertson.

Robertson said he noticed the oil Saturday evening when he went to dinner at Vinnie's Raw Bar which is located near Lake Norman.

The first few oysters he consumed were fine, but then he noticed something unusual.

"After I ate about four of them, I started looking at my hands and I'm like--what is this stuff on my hands," said Robertson.

Roy Hall is the manager of Vinnie's Raw Bar and he admits the substance in the oyster appeared to be oil.

He said possible food contamination is a concern in the seafood industry right now.

In fact, suppliers are scrambling to find fresh oysters and the cost is rising.

"Some of our suppliers have been maxed out, not able to meet our orders," said Hall.

While suppliers and restaurants are doing their best to screen the food, Hall said the substance was inside the oyster which makes it harder to detect.

On Monday, an inspector with the State health department examined the restaurant's new shipment of oysters, which came from the same area as the suspicious oysters.

He found no indication that any of the oysters were contaminated with oil, but he says the idea isn't too far-fetched given the extent of the oil spill in the Gulf.

"It's not out of the realm of possibility, but I would be real surprised to be honest," said Jeff French, inspector with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Even though Robertson loves seafood, for now, he's holding off on eating his favorite meal.

"I'm probably not going to order oysters or shrimp anymore, not for a long time," said Robertson.

The owner of Vinnie's told WBTV he is skeptical about the substance being oil, but he has notified the restaurant's supplier as a precaution.

People will do all kinds of stuff for attention, or to set up grounds for a lawsuit.

Yep. I call BS. Not that it is impossible just that if this guy got an oil soaked oyster then the probability of other patrons receiving the same are very high. Additionally, more oysters picked up from the same beds would be popping up in other restaurants and the next batches would be even dirtier.

Ploy for attention, move along.

Good thing I eat my fish from captain D's. All of that seafood there comes from China. I don't have to worry about any gulf oil there.

What a coincidence, was just doing inventory and tuna was amongst it. Do not need anymore, 110 cans wht abicore, exp date on them is 6/12, have alot of tuna to eat!

Very good Steal, that's a good beginning hahaahahaah, I have 50 cases of 48 cans each plus I don't know how many packs of 16........is not only for eating but also for dealing and trading with.

When the killing was going on in Cambodia one can went for one oz of gold, my X told me this and I sure are would not call her a liar........uffffffffff she just might move back in with me as punishment hahahahahahah.

How far do you think those experation dates can be pushed past? Mine are all in water, always hated draining the oil. But I just realized, if in oil, probably would perserve longer.

Unless something is wrong with the can itself it should be good for a long time, last week I had one from 1999 (Y2K?) and it was good.

How long does it take oil to go rancid? How long does it take pure, sealed and boiled water to go rancid? IOW, what made you think oil stored fish would last longer than water stored?

Yep, mine are all in water..........I do have about 48 cans of sardines, I don't eat it but maybe someone else will like it.

I, for one, enjoy eating the tuna straight from the can.

I remember at first it seemed really dry and hard to swallow.

It got better when I didn't drain it first. I do not know the quality of the water used in the broth, but hope for the best. The water/vegetable broth actually tastes good when you grind it all up together, this makes it moist enough to eat easily. You can cut out the mayo and bread if on a protein diet.

You will not feel cheated when TSHTF if you enjoy eating it plain. Those who always require mayo will have just another perceived misery in their lives. I Love plain tuna so I prep it pretty heavy, using Ponce as the pacesetter.

I am not prepping mayo, but if you can make mayonnaise you might have some sweet barter material for those who gotta have more flavor.

Shamelessly buy it all, NOW. Empty shelves will make the next person think for a minute.

And time to hit some of the stores that might have some of the stuff canned in 09.

It is not hard to find pre-mixed canned tuna salad which has more than just tuna in there. I stock both. The raw tuna can be eaten that way but if I want tuna salad I'll open a mix.

I guess I am too cheap for that fancy stuff.
But I wouldn't trade my plain for mixed though.
So maybe there is more to it than cost...
