RALEIGH -- State civil rights leaders encouraged people to risk being arrested as they announced plans tonight for a July 20 mass demonstration to protest the end of Wake County’s school diversity policy.

The Rev. William Barber, president of the state NAACP, said the rally will be held in Raleigh to coincide with that day’s school board meeting. As groups organize for the demonstration and other events, Barber told the crowd of more than 230 people at Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh to search their conscience to see if they’re willing to engage in acts of civil disobedience.

“You must now decide whether you want your community to go forward or to go backward,” Barber said. “Whether you’re willing to break a lesser law because they’re about to break a greater law.”

Barber was among four protesters who were arrested on trespassing charges after disrupting last week’s school board meeting. He and other critics of the new board majority argue that ending the socioeconomic diversity policy will lead to resegregation of schools.

But members of the board majority and their supporters argue the old system didn’t help low-income and minority students succeed. They say that going to a new system in which children are assigned to children in schools in their community will be better.

“I don’t know how encouraging people to break the law will help the kids,” said Debra Goldman, vice chairwoman of the school board.

Oh, so that's what happens when a bunch of whiny, coddled, self-entitled, collectivist brats realize that they no longer have access to their exclusive and largely racially-based preferential treatment. ::)

hmm - Raleigh looks to be ending/limiting the school busing program - "local schools" is a euphemism for such programs.

This would certainly mean that wealthy neighborhood children would go to local schools with other wealthy neighborhood children, and it follows that poorer neighborhood children will therefore not have the opportunity to steal from these wealthy neighborhood children.

Presumably, all the schools in the district are funded at the same level, there are no racial restrictions on where any person can live, so what is the problem?

Oh wait, I forgot, people who worked hard to succeed and made the lifestyle choices that allowed them to live in a nice neighborhood with good are supposed to give it up for persons who did neither -
