Whirlpool producing last refrigerators in Evansville, Ind., as production shifts to Mexico.

Associated Press
Evansville, Ind. -- The Whirlpool Corp. plant in Evansville that has been the site of protests over its closure is producing its final refrigerators.

The plant's production line is shutting down today, meaning the loss of some 600 jobs. About 450 other workers were laid off in March when Whirlpool ended its second production shift.

Company human resources director Tom Webster says a contractor will then begin removing equipment and furniture from the plant. He says the plant's future hasn't been decided.

The company announced last year that it would shut down the factory and move production to Mexico.

Some 1,500 people joined the AFL-CIO national president for an Evansville march in February protesting the decision by Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool.

My father worked there for 20 some years till he died in the 80's. My brother worked there 37 years until he died a couple of years ago. They were a major employer in the area at one time. Bye Bye jobs, see you in mexico. These were not overpaid GM jobs either. Union jobs but low paying ones comparatively.

Maybe so Ponce. I understand profit, shareholders and so forth but we gotta quit sending every job we have overseas.
We can't all do each others laundry. We need to produce something of value.

I concur that outsourcing needs to cease and production needs to increase but there's not much that can be done when considering that the government can't seem to stop over-regulating, over-taxing, and over-borrowing to fund itself and its cronies at the expense of the ordinary citizens.

Prosperity can only develop when the government ceases to interfere unnecessarily with the economy.

If they are sending all these jobs to mexico, why do all the mexicans keep coming over here. you'd think they would have jobs there ???

(singing)

"Look for the Union Label..."

My fear is that until US wages are no more than 2x that foreign competitors manufacturing will continue to offshore - I suspect we're looking at a significant lowering of the standard of living here in the US.

(snip) - you are correct MNeagle - I should have been more accurate and said " total labor costs" rather than wages.

I doubt it's the wages that are the major factor. I'm thinking it's the other benefits (health care, possible pensions, 401K, unions, et al) that drive business out of country.

I doubt it is any of that really. It may be the taxes and the regulations that a business has to face now.

*say my zinc plated screw business has a nasty byproduct that would be considered hazmat here in the U.S.A. and would cost me a fortune to properly dispose of, I can just dump it in a ditch in Mexico or China.

**plus all those f*cking OSHA regulations. You gotta have 36 inches of space around the water fountain and yellow and black tape marking the floor and a red sign warning of a trip/fire/electrical hazard or you'll get a 10,000 frn fine...per day...

***which of course is all by design. otherwise how could you break such a resource rich country as the USA, you have to tie anchors to everything moving.
