View Full Version : Desalination Plants and Oil

I just had a thought, that hit me like a ton of bricks.

I've been worried this whole time about the oil getting into the Florida aquafer, as that will make the state unliveable for pretty much the rest of time, but what I over looked was the water desalination plants.

There are 120 desalination plants in Florida. One of the biggest ones is in Tampa Bay and provides water for Hillsborough County (the county Tampa is in) and Pinellis County (clear water/st pete) among others.

The last NASA sat image I saw was from about 7-12 days ago and the oil slick was approaching Panama city with sheen reaching further south into the Gulf Stream Loop.

Latest reports say panama city residents have been getting pretty darn sick. This means the first of the oil is only a couple weeks from reaching Tampa, and when it does they will be forced to shut down the Tampa Desalination Facility. Who wants to speculate at what will happen to a county a million people when the water stops in the middle of summer in Florida? Anyone? Buller? Buller?

Really good thought Heimdhal.

here's the version out there from a month ago:
http://news.discovery.com/tech/gulf-power-plants-watch-oil.html

They make it sound like they'd have it under control. Doesn't really sound good though.

Thanks for the article. Its good to hear they arent totaly concerned, but its also not good at the same time. The article is a bit older, so its closer to when the oil first started. No one was thinking it was going to be this bad back then (no one as far as the regular folk). We now know for certain the oil will eventualy encompass the entirtey of the state.

The thing that worries me in the article is they say they arent concerned if they have to shut the water valves off because they have enough "reserves" in ground/lake water to make up for a TEMPORARY shut down. The thing is...if they shut down, it will NOT be temporary.

These concerns were linked on
http://whatreallyhappened.com/
quite a while ago, also on nuke
plants, they need to protect their
water for them to operate. Been
telling people there is too much to
post, must reading, etc, criminals
run the whole operation from a
to z, BP is not just a company.

They want it to get worse.
They are doing shit about it.

Skimmers are sitting idle everywhere.
And FEDS are interfering with local operations.
Just one link of many.

The thing that would really worry me is why a simple search isn't producing a more recent follow up story?

Yes, they very well know Temporary will be a very long time.

Here is what one of my friends wrote back in regards to OP:

Jeff,

The desalination plant they are talking about was an absolute fiasco.
Last time I looked it's output was so small it didn't matter if it
closed. Graft and Corruption at it's best.

Most Florida water comes from underground springs. There's one up the
road that blows millions of gallons a day out into the Gulf.
Rainfall affects the inland ones, but we got a shitload of that the
last few months.

Heck, even the recycled water pressure here is insane.
It's not like out West where they store the water in lakes or dams.

There's too many geezers here for them to shut off anything.

I can see that about the desal plants.

But water aquafer is strained hard core. There arent many springs in south florida like there are up north.

I also have no faith that "they" wont shut off anything cause of the "geezers". They really couldnt care less.

We also havent had all that much rain yet down here. May be different up north though.

Is your friend planning on sticking around?
