Cop came to my house 4:00 AM this morning.

Just wanted to return some missing property to me.

Apparently somebody broke into my car last night and took my work ID. Cops caught them and wanted to return my ID, apparently, right then.

I was nice to the guy, but really, couldn't they have just left the ID a note in my car asking me to call them if anything else was missing?

I suspect it was more to close the case before the end of the shift - it would be far easier to have original officer tie up the loose ends than have to fill out the property transfer forms and document the evidence if he'd had to pass it to another officer on the am shift.

Also, this gave them a chance to make sure that the perps hadn't done anything worse (e.g., home invasion) - I imagine it would have sucked to have been robbed, then left tied on the floor overnight until the morning duty officer stopped by at 10:30 am.

I'm happy that you actually had a positive outcome from your auto burglary (aside from the issue of having the car broken into to begin with....)

That would have scared the heck out of me. Ever since about the age of 30, nothing good comes from a knock at the door at 4:00 am.
