U.S. to donate $15M to preserve Auschwitz

KRAKOW, Poland, July 3 (UPI) -- The Obama administration said Saturday it plans to donate $15 million to help preserve the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration camp in Poland.

The U.S. State Department said the contribution, which needs congressional approval, "illustrates the significance of the Auschwitz-Birkenau site, helps commemorate the 1.1 million victims who perished there and demonstrates America's commitment to Holocaust education, remembrance and research."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the contribution at the Schindler Factory Museum, honoring Oskar Schindler, the German manufacturer who saved thousands of Jews during the Holocaust by giving them jobs.

The U.S. contribution, to be spread over five years, "will help preserve the camp so that future generations can see for themselves why the world must never again allow a place of such hatred to scar the soul of humankind," Clinton said.

The State Department said buildings and other artifacts at Auschwitz-Birkenau are in poor condition and in danger of deteriorating more.

"The preservation and continuation of Auschwitz-Birkenau is essential so that future generations can visit and understand how the world can never again allow a place of such hatred and persecution to exist," the department said in a statement.

Let's see, when did they start rounding up the jews and packing them off to camps? I don't know the exact date, but lets say it's 1942. When were these camps liberated? 2 years or 3 later?
