Police: NY man blows off arm with party fireworks
ISLIP TERRACE, N.Y. — Police say a man lighting fireworks has blown off his arm at a party on New York's Long Island.
Suffolk County police say 36-year-old Eric Smith was using a 3-foot long metal tube to shoot mortars from the street near his Islip (EYE'-slip) Terrace home around 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
Police believe he leaned over the device to ignite it and didn't get out of the way before an explosive shot out of the launcher. His left arm was severed at the shoulder.
Smith was taken to Southside Hospital in serious condition while friends packed the lost limb in ice to try to save it. Police believe doctors will try to reattach his arm.
A hospital spokesman didn't immediately return a call.
Police say another person at the party also was taken to a hospital, but it's unclear why.

any alcohol involved I wonder? probably as it was a celebration. Obviously they don't mix. It's a shame for that guy. At least they had ice.

An explosive device? In NY?
I'm surprised the Authorities haven't Gitmo'd the dumb ass, or at least tazed him a few times en route to the hospital in an attempt to gather information on who supplied the explosives to him. ???

Mountain Home fireworks display cancelled due to accident
By Rachael Giffoni
Story Published: Jul 4, 2010
An accidental set-off of a firework has lead to a chain reaction that's injured three firefighters, and resulted in the cancellation of Mountain Home's fireworks display.
The fireworks for Mountain Home have been cancelled for tomorrow's 4th of July celebration.
Around 1:20 this afternoon, when firefighters were preparing for the annual display - one of the shells exploded in one of the firefighter's hands.
Once the initial shell went off - it caused a chain reaction which set off 75% of the fireworks. Two firefighters injured were treated and released. Another remains in stable condition.
It's believed static electricity caused the explosion, but the incident is still under investigation.

Police: NY truck crash ignites illegal fireworks
Saturday, July 3, 2010
ULSTER PARK, N.Y. — Authorities in upstate New York say a truck driver caused a fiery crash that ignited a warehouse full of illegal fireworks.
The crash happened Tuesday on Route 9W in Ulster County.
Police said a dump truck driven by 55-year-old Jeffrey Kays made an illegal U-turn and was hit by a fuel truck.
Both drivers got out of their vehicles before the fuel truck exploded. But a nearby warehouse owned by a sign company called Ande Rooney caught fire.
The county sheriff’s office said illegal fireworks stored in the warehouse exploded.
Kays was charged with reckless driving and aggravated unlicensed driving.
The company was charged with unlawfully dealing fireworks. The firm’s lawyer, Thomas Petro, did not return a call Saturday.
