I just saw this. It seems Ruger keeps tinkering with the SR556. I like this evolution. Only thing I would change is making the flash hider removable. (and doing something about those roll pins)

Yeah, yeah, I know 5.56/.223. But I have a ton of magazines and ammo left over from when I had an AR. Now, I could sell those, but for a loss. Why not just get a new toy? ;D

I feel an AR with a piston system is better than DI.

The order of Gas system products I'd buy:

1. H&K 416
2. Lewis Machine & Tool MRP Defender
3. The Ruger

But, yeah.... that Ruger is pretty sweet

Is the HK 416 available to civvies yet? I was looking at the Scar 16S too. Sig was promising a cheap piston AR, but so far it's vaporware AFAIK.

The civilian version is called the "MR556" and should be available. I can get it here in Canada, so you probably can too. For a SHTF weapon, I'd want an AR variant. It's reliable (esp if it's a gas-piston version) and there's tonnes of parts out there. Will you be able to find parts for a SCAR after SHTF (but it is an awesome weapon)?

I'd have an SKS as a back-up. Add that with the Tapco furniture ( http://www.tapco.com/products/sks/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=179 ) , and it's a good shooter. I'm saying this for not if your AR breaks, but if all you have is 7.62x39 mm ammo.

Ah, groovy. I'll check that out. It won't be my primary "go to" weapon regardless.

These look pretty cool too, all American made.

yeah, I've seen them before; but don't know anything about their reliability. I know H&K and LMT make good products. I personally own an LMT, but not a piston version (yet).

The SR556c does look nice.. But if you are looking at the SCAR take a look at the Bushmaster ACR... Those also look promising.
