DELRAY BEACH — A Lantana man suspected of being the triggerman in the robbing and murder of a Lake Worth convenience store clerk in November has been identified as the gunman shot and killed Saturday night by the manager of a Delray Beach store.

Police this afternoon identified Tyrone Roy Pinkney, 23 of 111 North H. St., let out of state prison only in September.

Pinkney was arrested Nov. 18 on a charge of aggravated battery and using a gun during a felony in an unrelated Boynton Beach incident.

Detectives said at the time they suspected him in the Nov. 13 slaying of part-time clerk Miguel Gonazalez Huicochea at the Los Cunaos Grocery at 819 N. Dixie Highway in Lake Worth.

Pinkney's alleged partner in the deadly robbery, Keith Byrd, 23, confessed after his arrest that he took part but said it was Pinkney who gunned down the clerk, a report said at the time.

Pinkney left jail after posting $150,000 bail on the charges, which later were dropped, jail records show.

Pinkney had not been formally charged in the Los Cunaos incident, but the case was still open at the time of his death, Palm Beach County Sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said today.

According to Delray Beach reports, Pinkney ran into the Community Food Market at 139 Northwest Fifth Ave. around 10 p.m. Saturday and tried to rob the store.

A clerk saw the man with the gun and ducked behind the counter before Pinkney started shooting at the clerk. The clerk grabbed a gun from behind the counter and returned fire, hitting Pinkney.

After the shootout, the clerk ran from the store and called 911, according to the report. Police found Pinkney lying on the ground in front of the store still clutching a semiautomatic handgun in his right hand. He had been shot once in the chest.

He was taken to Delray Medical Center, where he died.

The clerk, who was not injured, was questioned but was not taken into custody, Delray Beach police spokesman Jeff Messer said. Police have not identified the man.

Messer said today he had not heard about the connection to the Lake Worth slaying in November.

In that incident, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff's reports, Gonzalez-Huicochea, 38, of Lake Worth was working at the store when two apparently teenaged gunmen walked into the store about 9:45 p.m., dressed in black and their faces covered in clothing. One carried a semiautomatic handgun, the other had a revolver.

The two pushed and shoved Gonzalez-Huicochea as they robbed him and then headed for the door. The clerk followed. One of the robbers turned and shot him once in the chest.

Gonzalez-Huicochea worked full time as a landscaper for more than 20 years.

His girlfriend said at the time that he'd worked at the store on weekends for about three months as a favor to the owner, a friend.

Pinkney was in state prison from December 2006 to September 2007 on a 2006 Palm Beach County conviction for cocaine sales and again from September 2008 to September 2009, on a 2007 conviction for fleeing.

Jail records show Pinkney also was arrested on drug charges in 2004 and 2005.

He was just turning his life around! He was such a good boy! Everyone loved him! Nobody saw it coming, he was pushed to the edge by whitey! Couldn't he have just shot his leg or something?

Sorry... very odd sense of humor tonight. It's been a strange and tiring weekend.

It was a factory recall - Good Boy was clearly defective goods. We need more people out there to recognize some people's warranty expiration and pull their battery pack for the benefit of society.

Some "people" are defective from birth. Best to shut down the production line altogether.

Yep, unless I'm mistaken, the bond cost is a non-refundable 10% of whatever the bail is, so someone would have to pony up $15k to get out of jail until trial
