No one could accuse The Chinese of being squeamish about the things they eat - monkeys' brains, owls' eyes, bears' paws and deep fried scorpions are all items on The menu. But most dishes revered as national favorites sound as harmless as boiled rice when compared to the latest pint de jour allegedly gaining favor in Shenzhen - human fetus.
Rumors that dead embryos were being used as dietary supplements started to spread early last year with reports that some doctors in Shenzhen hospitals were eating dead fetuses after carrying out abortions. The doctors allegedly defended their actions by saying the embryos were good for their skin and general health.

A trend was set and soon reports circulated that doctors in the city were promoting fetuses as a human tonic. Hospital cleaning women were seen fighting each other to take the treasured human remains home. Last month, reporters from EastWeek - a sister publication of Eastern Express - went to Shenzhen to see if the rumors could be substantiated. On March 7, a reporter entered the state-run Shenzhen Heath Center for Women and Children feigning illness and asked a female doctor for a fetus. The doctor said the department was out of stock but to come again.

The next day the reporter returned at lunch time. The doctor eventually emerged from the operating theatre holding a fist size glass bottle stuffed with thumbsized fetuses.

She said: "There are 10 fetuses here, all aborted this morning. You can take them. We are a state hospital and don't charge anything.

"Normally, we doctors take them home to eat - all free. Since you don't look well, you can take them."

Not every state hospital is as generous with its dead embryos as the Health Center for Women and Children. At the Shenzhen People's Hospital, for example, the reporter was in for a surprise.

When a Ms. Yang, the head nurse, was asked for fetuses, she looked anxious and asked other staff to leave. After closing the door, she asked the undercover buyer in a low voice: "Where did you (get to) know that we sell fetuses?"

The reporter answered: "A doctor friend in Hong Kong told me."

"Who? What is his/her name?"
The reporter was not prepared for this line of questioning and could not come up with a name. Yang told him that fetuses were only for sale within the hospital, and were not for public purchase. She added that some staff would, however, sell the fetuses on to Hong Kong buyers.

The reporter learned that the going rate for a fetus was $10 but when the merchandise was in short supply, the price could go up to $20. But these prices are pin money compared to those set by private clinics, which are said to make a fortune selling fetuses. One chap on Bong Men Lao Street charges $300 for one fetus. The person in charge of the clinic is a man in his 60's. When he saw the ailing reporter, he offered to take an order for fetuses that had reached full-term and which, it is claimed, contain the best healing properties. When a female doctor named Yang - no relation - of Sin Hua clinic was asked whether fetuses were edible, she said emphatically: "Of course they are. They are even better than placentas.

"They can make your skin smoother, your body stronger and are good for kidneys. When I was in an army hospital in Jiangti province, I often brought fetuses home. They were pink, like little mice, with hands and feet. Normally, I buy some pork to make soup (with the fetuses added). I know they are human beings, and (eating them) feels disgusting. But at that time, it was already very popular."

A Mr. Cheng from Hong Kong claims he has been eating fetus soup for more than six months. To begin, the man, in his 40's, would make the trip to Shenzhen frequently for business and was introduced to fetuses by friends. He says he met a number of professors and doctors in government hospitals who helped him buy the fetuses. "At first, I felt uncomfortable, but doctors said the substances in fetuses could help cure my asthma. I started taking them and gradually, the asthma disappeared," Cheng said.

Now, Cheng only eats fetuses occasionally to top up his treatment, but there was a time when he made regular cross border trips with the gruesome merchandise. "Everytime [I made the trip], I carried a Thermos flask to Shenzhen and brought the fetuses back to Hong Kong to make soup. If they gave me 20 or 30 at a time, I put them in the refrigerator. I didn't have the soup every day - it depended on the supply.

"Usually, I washed the fetuses clean, and added ginger, orange peel and pork to make soup. After taking it for a while, I felt a lot better and my asthma disappeared. I used to take placenta, but it was not so helpful." When asked if he was concerned about the fetuses containing diseases, Cheng was dismissive. "I bought them from government hospitals. They would check the pregnant women before doing the operations and only sell them to me if there was no problem. Also, I always boil them over high heat which kills any bacteria." Although Cheng has overcome any squeamishness over eating fetus soup, he says he draw the line at consuming whole dead embryos. He also refrains from telling people of his grisly dietary habits.

Zou Qin, 32, a woman from Hubei with the fine skin of a someone several years younger, attributes her well preserved looks to a diet of fetuses. As a doctor at the Lun Hu Clinic, Zou has carried out abortions on several hundred patients. She believes fetuses are highly nutritious and claims to have eaten more than 100 in the past six months. She pulls out a fetus specimen before a reporter and explains the selection criteria. "People normally prefer (fetuses of) young women, and even better, the first baby and a male." She adds: "They are wasted if we don't eat them. The women who receive abortions here don't want the fetuses. Also, the fetuses are already dead [when we eat them]. We don't carry out abortions just to eat the fetuses.

"Before, my sister's children were very weak. I heard that fetuses were good for your health and started taking some to my nephews," Zou says, without remorse. "I wash them with clear water until they look transparent white and then stew them. Making soup is best." But she admits there are drawbacks to this dubious delicacy. "Fetuses are very smelly and not everybody can take the stink," she said. "You can also make meat cakes by mixing fetuses with minced meat but you have to add more ginger and chives to get rid of the smell."

Hong Kong legislator Dr. Tan Siu-tong is surprised that it could be within anyone's capability to overcome the stench of a dead fetus, even if their stomachs are lined with lead. "When all the placental tissue is dead, the smell is awful and is enough to make you feel sick. It is like having a dead mouse in the house," he said.

The fetuses allegedly eaten by the Chinese are all provided by China's extensive abortion services. Last year, doctors in the People's Hospital - the biggest hospital in Shenzhen - carried out more than 7,000 terminations, 509 on Hong Kong women. The Hong Kong Family Planning Association (FPA) estimates that 24 per cent of all abortions on Hong Kong women are performed in the dubious surroundings of a Chinese hospital. A Ms. Li from Hong Kong has had two abortions in Shenzhen but has never heard of people eating fetuses. "But I didn't want the babies, so after the abortions, I just left them with the hospital," she says. "I didn't want to look at them, and I certainly didn't want to keep them. Fetuses of two or three months are just water and blood when they come out. They are so small, how can you eat them?"

Doctors in the territory have responded with disgust and incredulity to stories of people supplementing their diets with fetuses. Many have read articles of fetal cannibalism but none has been able to verify the reports. They are treating the issue with skepticism. Dr. Margaret Kwan, a gynecologist who until two weeks ago held the post of chief executive at the FPA, says: "This is the strangest thing I have ever heard coming out of China. I just hope it is not true."

Dr. Warren Lee, president of the Hong Kong Nutrition Association, is aware of the unsavory rumors. "Eating fetuses is a kind of traditional Chinese medicine and is deeply founded in Chinese folklore. In terms of nutrition, a fetus would be a good source of protein and fats, and there are minerals in bone. But I don't know if eating fetuses is just folklore or more than that," he says. According to Lee, it is conceivable that fetuses are rich in certain hormones that are beneficial to the adult human body, but should this be the case, the fetal matter would have to be converted into an indictable form for best results, as most hormones including the hormone for diabetes, insulin - are broken down in the digestive system before they have a chance to be absorbed by the body.

But Lee suggests that anyone who eats a fetus would be seeking a remedy that is far more elusive than a hormone or mineral. "Some people may think there is also an unidentified substance or chemical that has healing powers, but there is no evidence that this is true." Lee urges people to be wary - "There are people out there who just want to make money and they will come up with all sorts of formulas or substances, which, they say will cure diseases."

As a child, Patrick Yau was fed on human placentas by his mother who worked at a local hospital, but in his current position as a psychologist with the Social Welfare Department he is both repulsed and shocked by the notion of eating fetuses. "As a Catholic, I object to abortions because I believe the fetus is a human life, and I certainly object to eating a dead baby after it has been aborted," he says. Yau concedes that in China, where the one child policy has turned abortions into an acceptable remedy to an unfortunate human blunder, people may have adopted a new outlook on life before birth, such that embryos are stripped of their status as human beings.

But Tang fails to understand how anyone anywhere can convince themselves "that they are just eating an organism when they are actually eating a dead body". "It may not be a formed human being, but when they think about it most people would think: 'Ugh! No, I can't eat that.' I don't think civilized people with an education could do that sort of thing."

Dr. Wong, a Hong Kong doctor who practices Western medicine, thinks only the ignorant would eat human fetuses. He explains that fetuses contain mucoploysaccharide, which is beneficial to the metabolism, but states that it can be found in a lot of other food - Chinese doctor Chu Ho-Ting agrees that there is no place for fetuses in medicine, and suggests that it might even be unhealthy if the pregnant woman was infected by disease.

"Most bacteria can be killed under 100 degree heat but some require 400 degrees. Some people believe eating fetuses can strengthen the immunity of the human body against diseases, but this is wrong. Although fetuses contain protein, they are not as nutritious as placenta, which contains different kinds of nutrients. But even placenta has to be taken with other Chinese herbs."

That was my first reaction too - but for the first one's showing identifiable animals. I initially didn't even look at the last pictures closely enough to realize they had switched to eating babies.

Ireland, from being a burden on their parents or country, and for
making them beneficial to the publick.

It is a melancholy object to those, who walk through this great
town, or travel in the country, when they see the streets, the
roads and cabbin-doors crowded with beggars of the female sex,
followed by three, four, or six children, all in rags, and
importuning every passenger for an alms. These mothers instead of
being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to
employ all their time in stroling to beg sustenance for their
helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for
want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for
the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes.

I think it is agreed by all parties, that this prodigious number
of children in the arms, or on the backs, or at the heels of
their mothers, and frequently of their fathers, is in the present
deplorable state of the kingdom, a very great additional
grievance; and therefore whoever could find out a fair, cheap and
easy method of making these children sound and useful members of
the common-wealth, would deserve so well of the publick, as to
have his statue set up for a preserver of the nation.

But my intention is very far from being confined to provide only
for the children of professed beggars: it is of a much greater
extent, and shall take in the whole number of infants at a
certain age, who are born of parents in effect as little able to
support them, as those who demand our charity in the streets.

As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years, upon
this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes
of our projectors, I have always found them grossly mistaken in
their computation. It is true, a child just dropt from its dam,
may be supported by her milk, for a solar year, with little other
nourishment: at most not above the value of two shillings, which
the mother may certainly get, or the value in scraps, by her
lawful occupation of begging; and it is exactly at one year old
that I propose to provide for them in such a manner, as, instead
of being a charge upon their parents, or the parish, or wanting
food and raiment for the rest of their lives, they shall, on the
contrary, contribute to the feeding, and partly to the cloathing
of many thousands.

There is likewise another great advantage in my scheme, that it
will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice
of women murdering their bastard children, alas! too frequent
among us, sacrificing the poor innocent babes, I doubt, more to
avoid the expence than the shame, which would move tears and pity
in the most savage and inhuman breast.

The number of souls in this kingdom being usually reckoned one
million and a half, of these I calculate there may be about two
hundred thousand couple whose wives are breeders; from which
number I subtract thirty thousand couple, who are able to
maintain their own children, (although I apprehend there cannot
be so many, under the present distresses of the kingdom) but this
being granted, there will remain an hundred and seventy thousand
breeders. I again subtract fifty thousand, for those women who
miscarry, or whose children die by accident or disease within the
year. There only remain an hundred and twenty thousand children
of poor parents annually born. The question therefore is, How
this number shall be reared, and provided for? which, as I have
already said, under the present situation of affairs, is utterly
impossible by all the methods hitherto proposed. For we can
neither employ them in handicraft or agriculture; we neither
build houses, (I mean in the country) nor cultivate land: they
can very seldom pick up a livelihood by stealing till they arrive
at six years old; except where they are of towardly parts,
although I confess they learn the rudiments much earlier; during
which time they can however be properly looked upon only as
probationers: As I have been informed by a principal gentleman in
the county of Cavan, who protested to me, that he never knew
above one or two instances under the age of six, even in a part
of the kingdom so renowned for the quickest proficiency in that
art.

I am assured by our merchants, that a boy or a girl before twelve
years old, is no saleable commodity, and even when they come to
this age, they will not yield above three pounds, or three pounds
and half a crown at most, on the exchange; which cannot turn to
account either to the parents or kingdom, the charge of
nutriments and rags having been at least four times that value.

I shall now therefore humbly propose my own thoughts, which I
hope will not be liable to the least objection.

I have been assured by a very knowing American of my acquaintance
in London, that a young healthy child well nursed, is, at a year
old, a most delicious nourishing and wholesome food, whether
stewed, roasted, baked, or boiled; and I make no doubt that it
will equally serve in a fricasie, or a ragoust.

I do therefore humbly offer it to publick consideration, that of
the hundred and twenty thousand children, already computed,
twenty thousand may be reserved for breed, whereof only one
fourth part to be males; which is more than we allow to sheep,
black cattle, or swine, and my reason is, that these children are
seldom the fruits of marriage, a circumstance not much regarded
by our savages, therefore, one male will be sufficient to serve
four females. That the remaining hundred thousand may, at a year
old, be offered in sale to the persons of quality and fortune,
through the kingdom, always advising the mother to let them suck
plentifully in the last month, so as to render them plump, and
fat for a good table. A child will make two dishes at an
entertainment for friends, and when the family dines alone, the
fore or hind quarter will make a reasonable dish, and seasoned
with a little pepper or salt, will be very good boiled on the
fourth day, especially in winter.

I have reckoned upon a medium, that a child just born will weigh
12 pounds, and in a solar year, if tolerably nursed, encreaseth
to 28 pounds.

I grant this food will be somewhat dear, and therefore very
proper for landlords, who, as they have already devoured most of
the parents, seem to have the best title to the children.

Infant's flesh will be in season throughout the year, but more
plentiful in March, and a little before and after; for we are
told by a grave author, an eminent French physician, that fish
being a prolifick dyet, there are more children born in Roman
Catholick countries about nine months after Lent, the markets
will be more glutted than usual, because the number of Popish
infants, is at least three to one in this kingdom, and therefore
it will have one other collateral advantage, by lessening the
number of Papists among us.

I have already computed the charge of nursing a beggar's child
(in which list I reckon all cottagers, labourers, and four-fifths
of the farmers) to be about two shillings per annum, rags
included; and I believe no gentleman would repine to give ten
shillings for the carcass of a good fat child, which, as I have
said, will make four dishes of excellent nutritive meat, when he
hath only some particular friend, or his own family to dine with
him. Thus the squire will learn to be a good landlord, and grow
popular among his tenants, the mother will have eight shillings
neat profit, and be fit for work till she produces another child.

Those who are more thrifty (as I must confess the times require)
may flea the carcass; the skin of which, artificially dressed,
will make admirable gloves for ladies, and summer boots for fine
gentlemen.

As to our City of Dublin, shambles may be appointed for this
purpose, in the most convenient parts of it, and butchers we may
be assured will not be wanting; although I rather recommend
buying the children alive, and dressing them hot from the knife,
as we do roasting pigs.

A very worthy person, a true lover of his country, and whose
virtues I highly esteem, was lately pleased, in discoursing on
this matter, to offer a refinement upon my scheme. He said, that
many gentlemen of this kingdom, having of late destroyed their
deer, he conceived that the want of venison might be well
supply'd by the bodies of young lads and maidens, not exceeding
fourteen years of age, nor under twelve; so great a number of
both sexes in every country being now ready to starve for want of
work and service: And these to be disposed of by their parents if
alive, or otherwise by their nearest relations. But with due
deference to so excellent a friend, and so deserving a patriot, I
cannot be altogether in his sentiments; for as to the males, my
American acquaintance assured me from frequent experience, that
their flesh was generally tough and lean, like that of our
school-boys, by continual exercise, and their taste disagreeable,
and to fatten them would not answer the charge. Then as to the
females, it would, I think, with humble submission, be a loss to
the publick, because they soon would become breeders themselves:
And besides, it is not improbable that some scrupulous people
might be apt to censure such a practice, (although indeed very
unjustly) as a little bordering upon cruelty, which, I confess,
hath always been with me the strongest objection against any
project, how well soever intended.

But in order to justify my friend, he confessed, that this
expedient was put into his head by the famous Salmanaazor, a
native of the island Formosa, who came from thence to London,
above twenty years ago, and in conversation told my friend, that
in his country, when any young person happened to be put to
death, the executioner sold the carcass to persons of quality, as
a prime dainty; and that, in his time, the body of a plump girl
of fifteen, who was crucified for an attempt to poison the
Emperor, was sold to his imperial majesty's prime minister of
state, and other great mandarins of the court in joints from the
gibbet, at four hundred crowns. Neither indeed can I deny, that
if the same use were made of several plump young girls in this
town, who without one single groat to their fortunes, cannot stir
abroad without a chair, and appear at a play-house and assemblies
in foreign fineries which they never will pay for; the kingdom
would not be the worse.

Some persons of a desponding spirit are in great concern about
that vast number of poor people, who are aged, diseased, or
maimed; and I have been desired to employ my thoughts what course
may be taken, to ease the nation of so grievous an incumbrance.
But I am not in the least pain upon that matter, because it is
very well known, that they are every day dying, and rotting, by
cold and famine, and filth, and vermin, as fast as can be
reasonably expected. And as to the young labourers, they are now
in almost as hopeful a condition. They cannot get work, and
consequently pine away from want of nourishment, to a degree,
that if at any time they are accidentally hired to common labour,
they have not strength to perform it, and thus the country and
themselves are happily delivered from the evils to come.

I have too long digressed, and therefore shall return to my
subject. I think the advantages by the proposal which I have made
are obvious and many, as well as of the highest importance.

For first, as I have already observed, it would greatly lessen
the number of Papists, with whom we are yearly over-run, being
the principal breeders of the nation, as well as our most
dangerous enemies, and who stay at home on purpose with a design
to deliver the kingdom to the Pretender, hoping to take their
advantage by the absence of so many good Protestants, who have
chosen rather to leave their country, than stay at home and pay
tithes against their conscience to an episcopal curate.

Secondly, The poorer tenants will have something valuable of
their own, which by law may be made liable to a distress, and
help to pay their landlord's rent, their corn and cattle being
already seized, and money a thing unknown.

Thirdly, Whereas the maintainance of an hundred thousand
children, from two years old, and upwards, cannot be computed at
less than ten shillings a piece per annum, the nation's stock
will be thereby encreased fifty thousand pounds per annum,
besides the profit of a new dish, introduced to the tables of all
gentlemen of fortune in the kingdom, who have any refinement in
taste. And the money will circulate among our selves, the goods
being entirely of our own growth and manufacture.

Fourthly, The constant breeders, besides the gain of eight
shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children, will
be rid of the charge of maintaining them after the first year.

Fifthly, This food would likewise bring great custom to taverns,
where the vintners will certainly be so prudent as to procure the
best receipts for dressing it to perfection; and consequently
have their houses frequented by all the fine gentlemen, who
justly value themselves upon their knowledge in good eating; and
a skilful cook, who understands how to oblige his guests, will
contrive to make it as expensive as they please.

Sixthly, This would be a great inducement to marriage, which all
wise nations have either encouraged by rewards, or enforced by
laws and penalties. It would encrease the care and tenderness of
mothers towards their children, when they were sure of a
settlement for life to the poor babes, provided in some sort by
the publick, to their annual profit instead of expence. We should
soon see an honest emulation among the married women, which of
them could bring the fattest child to the market. Men would
become as fond of their wives, during the time of their
pregnancy, as they are now of their mares in foal, their cows in
calf, or sow when they are ready to farrow; nor offer to beat or
kick them (as is too frequent a practice) for fear of a
miscarriage.

Many other advantages might be enumerated. For instance, the
addition of some thousand carcasses in our exportation of
barrel'd beef: the propagation of swine's flesh, and improvement
in the art of making good bacon, so much wanted among us by the
great destruction of pigs, too frequent at our tables; which are
no way comparable in taste or magnificence to a well grown, fat
yearly child, which roasted whole will make a considerable figure
at a Lord Mayor's feast, or any other publick entertainment. But
this, and many others, I omit, being studious of brevity.

own languages, the most recent was covered in English by the Korean Press,
a major paper, they covered some other Chinese press story, there is actually
a hug market for fetuses in China, you can buy them for a price, this is discussed
in the article, the pictures are disgusting, it is real babies, they are whole, guess what,
the media in the States covered this a long time ago, it was on 20/20 or something,
a doctor offers a fetus to a reporter, the next day the reporter gets turned away,
Cannibalism is actually a part of some Chinese major work on health and foods,

這 事 件 彷 彿 就 像 一 道 煙 幕 彈 ， 更 令 人 相 信 吃 嬰 兒 是 不 可 能 存 在 的 天 方 夜 譚 ， 是 污 衊 中 國 人 的 惡 意 中 傷 。 然 而 ， 本 刊 經 過 多 日 查 訪 ， 竟 發 現 中 國 廣 東 就 有 不 少 老 饕 ， 把 吃 嬰 兒 當 成 冬 令 進 補 的 食 材 。
他 們 透 過 管 道 ， 購 入 墮 胎 的 死 嬰 ， 甚 至 足 月 的 活 胎 ， 再 以 中 藥 材 燉 煮 成 「 嬰 兒 湯 」 ， 聲 稱 能 壯 陽 、 補 氣 。 在 官 方 一 胎 化 政 策 的 扭 曲 ， 以 及 中 國 人 傳 統 的 食 補 意 識 作 祟 下 ， 這 項 令 人 髮 指 的 罪 行 ， 竟 已 經 存 在 二 十 多 年 ！

年 初 ， 在 東 莞 的 台 灣 街 ， 遇 到 一 位 從 事 皮 革 加 工 的 李 姓 台 商 。 閒 談 間 他 說 ， 去 年 有 一 回 到 大 陸 朋 友 家 吃 飯 ， 席 間 端 出 一 大 碗 湯 ， 對 方 直 說 ： 「 很 補 ， 趁 熱 喝 。 」 作 客 的 李 姓 台 商 和 另 一 位 台 灣 朋 友 ， 喝 了 幾 口 ， 直 稱 「 湯 味 鮮 濃 」 。 追 問 下 ， 對 方 才 告 訴 他 那 是 「 嬰 兒 湯 」 。
李 姓 台 商 還 以 為 朋 友 在 開 玩 笑 ， 直 到 撈 出 「 胎 形 」 為 證 ， 兩 位 台 灣 人 當 場 翻 臉 ， 拂 袖 而 去 。 李 姓 台 商 說 ， 後 來 才 知 道 ， 部 分 廣 東 人 把 「 嬰 兒 湯 」 當 做 珍 貴 的 私 房 菜 ， 只 有 至 交 才 一 起 享 用 ， 偶 而 招 待 遠 道 而 來 的 貴 客 。

高 師 傅 處 理 起 胎 嬰 熟 練 不 帶 感 情 ， 二 十 年 來 ， 他 已 親 手 處 理 過 五 、 六 十 個 胎 嬰 。

　

在 大 陸 的 中 藥 房 ， 只 要 花 上 人 民 幣 7 、 80 元 就 能 買 到 曬 乾 後 的 胎 盤 「 紫 河 車 」 。

由 於 胎 嬰 十 分 羸 瘦 ， 廣 東 老 饕 另 外 加 入 雞 肉 、 排 骨 燉 煮 。

　

為 進 補 　 胎 兒 也 入 口

當 時 我 們 聽 聽 也 就 算 了 ， 直 覺 臭 屁 的 台 商 到 處 都 是 。 事 實 上 ， 類 似 的 事 情 在 網 路 的 留 言 板 上 也 時 有 所 聞 ， 但 也 多 被 當 做 是 網 路 謠 言 。 後 來 又 聽 到 多 位 人 士 提 及 ， 才 不 得 不 引 起 我 們 的 重 視 。 早 就 聽 說 ， 在 廣 東 ， 人 們 什 麼 都 吃 ， 但 連 胎 兒 都 吃 ， 倒 真 令 人 匪 夷 所 思 。
不 過 ， 不 管 是 宣 稱 自 己 吃 過 、 或 是 聽 說 身 邊 的 朋 友 吃 過 ， 對 於 細 節 ， 幾 乎 沒 有 人 願 意 詳 談 ； 只 要 我 們 問 到 在 哪 裡 吃 過 ， 大 家 就 都 三 緘 其 口 。
後 來 透 過 關 係 ， 接 觸 到 王 姓 商 人 ， 調 查 才 有 進 一 步 的 進 展 。 王 姓 商 人 在 東 莞 經 商 多 年 ， 草 根 性 濃 厚 ， 地 方 上 的 人 際 網 絡 三 教 九 流 。 混 熟 了 ， 他 才 親 口 證 實 自 己 曾 被 大 陸 友 人 招 待 喝 過 嬰 兒 湯 ， 甚 至 表 示 有 機 會 可 以 帶 我 們 去 見 識 一 下 。
在 卡 拉 OK 包 廂 裡 ， 酒 過 三 巡 的 王 姓 商 人 如 數 家 珍 地 說 ， 「 嬰 兒 湯 」 中 加 入 巴 蘄 、 黨 蔘 、 當 歸 、 枸 杞 等 大 量 中 藥 燉 煮 ， 很 能 壯 陽 、 補 氣 ， 「 以 我 六 十 二 歲 的 年 紀 ， 每 天 都 可 以 來 一 回 。 」 王 姓 商 人 說 著 ， 當 眾 緊 摟 身 旁 十 九 歲 的 湖 南 二 奶 。
透 過 王 姓 商 人 的 介 紹 ， 我 們 就 這 樣 半 信 半 疑 地 到 廣 東 佛 山 市 ， 找 經 營 餐 廳 的 黎 師 傅 。 儘 管 已 經 請 王 姓 商 人 打 過 電 話 ， 但 黎 師 傅 對 我 們 的 態 度 依 然 十 分 防 範 。 幾 天 後 ， 再 度 拉 著 王 姓 商 人 一 起 去 ， 才 算 打 通 關 節 。
黎 師 傅 就 是 王 姓 商 人 上 回 被 招 待 喝 嬰 兒 湯 的 發 起 人 兼 主 廚 ， 黎 師 傅 說 自 己 第 一 次 喝 「 嬰 兒 湯 」 是 二 十 年 前 的 事 ， 當 時 接 生 婆 私 下 墮 胎 的 機 會 多 ， 只 要 有 健 康 的 墮 胎 胎 兒 ， 接 生 婆 就 會 找 他 一 起 進 補 ， 還 騙 他 是 貓 肉 。

　

續 香 火 　 溺 殺 女 胎 嬰

一 九 七 九 年 大 陸 推 行 一 胎 化 政 策 ， 規 定 城 市 居 民 只 能 生 一 個 小 孩 ， 農 村 居 民 如 果 第 一 胎 生 的 是 女 孩 ， 則 允 許 生 第 二 胎 ， 但 要 間 隔 四 年 才 能 再 懷 孕 。 多 年 來 ， 為 了 生 兒 子 溺 殺 女 嬰 的 事 件 時 有 所 聞 ， 不 過 ， 胎 兒 成 了 老 饕 盤 中 佳 餚 ， 真 是 駭 人 聽 聞 。
四 十 歲 的 黎 師 傅 言 談 間 看 起 來 可 信 ， 不 過 ， 他 說 現 在 查 得 嚴 ， 要 吃 「 嬰 兒 排 骨 」 是 可 遇 不 可 求 了 。 由 於 吃 嬰 兒 涉 及 法 律 問 題 ， 因 此 ， 每 回 黎 師 傅 提 到 「 吃 嬰 兒 」 ， 都 以 「 吃 排 骨 」 代 稱 ， 以 免 招 惹 麻 煩 。
一 九 九 九 年 十 月 一 日 起 ， 中 共 實 施 「 母 嬰 保 健 法 」 後 ， 私 下 接 生 或 墮 胎 的 情 形 少 了 。 母 嬰 保 健 法 規 定 ， 不 僅 禁 止 以 超 音 波 判 別 胎 兒 性 別 ， 也 全 面 取 締 非 醫 院 內 的 墮 胎 、 接 生 行 為 。
不 過 ， 由 於 重 男 輕 女 的 觀 念 依 舊 ， 加 上 處 罰 十 分 嚴 重 ， 多 生 者 將 被 處 予 人 民 幣 三 萬 元 （ 相 當 於 新 台 幣 十 二 萬 元 ） 的 罰 款 ， 使 得 接 生 婆 和 殺 嬰 、 販 嬰 事 件 在 中 國 大 陸 各 地 ， 特 別 是 農 村 地 區 依 然 屢 禁 不 止 。
為 了 滿 足 少 數 老 饕 的 口 腹 ， 還 是 有 一 批 業 餘 的 仲 介 人 ， 負 責 張 羅 嬰 兒 。 黎 師 傅 說 ， 他 們 想 喝 嬰 兒 湯 的 時 候 ， 就 會 透 過 仲 介 人 去 找 ， 事 實 上 ， 這 些 人 都 是 熟 識 的 朋 友 ， 大 部 分 是 廣 州 各 地 的 廚 師 和 流 動 菜 販 ， 只 要 一 聽 說 那 裡 有 人 要 墮 胎 或 提 早 引 產 ， 就 會 通 知 老 饕 們 「 提 貨 」 ， 賺 取 三 、 五 百 元 的 紅 包 錢 。
由 於 ， 農 村 多 生 情 形 嚴 重 ， 計 畫 生 育 官 員 查 得 緊 ， 往 往 有 一 些 懷 胎 七 、 八 個 月 的 婦 女 ， 無 法 掩 飾 體 態 ， 被 發 現 後 遭 強 制 墮 胎 ， 部 分 胎 屍 被 不 肖 者 外 流 。 黎 師 傅 說 ， 他 們 吃 到 的 通 常 是 七 、 八 個 月 大 的 胎 兒 ， 言 談 之 間 ， 似 乎 吃 嬰 兒 對 他 們 來 說 稀 鬆 平 常 。

胎 盤 湯 　 竟 是 家 常 菜
在 黎 師 傅 處 雖 然 沒 辦 法 親 眼 證 實 「 吃 嬰 兒 」 的 傳 聞 ， 但 我 們 卻 意 外 發 現 ， 吃 新 鮮 胎 盤 在 中 國 大 陸 竟 是 一 道 家 常 菜 。 黎 師 傅 說 ： 「 排 骨 雖 然 不 好 搞 ， 但 胎 盤 倒 是 容 易 得 很 ， 冰 箱 裡 就 有 。 」 說 著 轉 身 從 冰 箱 底 層 拿 出 一 個 層 層 包 裹 的 塑 膠 袋 ， 「 今 天 剛 剛 送 到 ， 這 東 西 不 能 冷 凍 ， 新 鮮 的 好 。 」
由 於 胎 盤 煲 湯 要 煮 八 個 小 時 ， 黎 師 傅 叫 我 們 隔 天 再 到 餐 廳 去 ， 要 煲 一 鍋 胎 盤 湯 請 我 們 喝 。 為 了 進 一 步 追 查 ， 第 二 天 中 午 來 到 餐 廳 ， 黎 師 傅 領 我 們 進 廚 房 後 ， 只 見 他 從 冰 箱 拿 出 塑 膠 袋 ， 掏 出 兩 團 血 紅 的 胎 盤 肉 塊 處 理 。 晚 餐 ， 黎 師 傅 端 上 一 盅 中 藥 味 四 溢 胎 盤 湯 ， 只 見 席 間 的 大 陸 朋 友 ， 唏 哩 呼 嚕 的 喝 下 肚 。 問 他 們 知 道 喝 的 是 什 麼 湯 時 ， 司 機 阿 明 輕 鬆 地 說 ： 「 知 道 啊 ， 就 是 胎 盤 ， 家 裡 媽 媽 也 會 煲 。 」

新 鮮 胎 盤 湯 在 大 陸 是 一 道 家 常 菜 ， 父 母 常 以 此 為 孩 子 進 補 。

　

鮮 胎 盤 　 熟 門 路 訂 貨
回 東 莞 後 ， 跟 大 陸 朋 友 提 起 在 佛 山 喝 胎 盤 湯 的 事 ， 朋 友 以 為 我 們 喜 歡 ， 不 慌 不 忙 地 說 ： 「 你 要 的 話 ， 明 天 再 幫 你 搞 一 個 ； 不 過 這 東 西 不 能 多 吃 ， 吃 多 了 會 胖 。 」
隔 天 下 午 ， 朋 友 就 熱 心 地 打 電 話 給 我 ： 「 東 西 找 到 了 ， 不 過 要 再 等 一 等 ， 就 快 生 了 。 」 掛 上 電 話 ， 真 的 有 點 哭 笑 不 得 ， 沒 想 到 胎 盤 竟 是 這 樣 「 訂 貨 」 的 。 果 真 一 個 鐘 頭 後 ， 朋 友 就 把 新 鮮 的 胎 盤 送 上 門 了 。
大 陸 朋 友 一 副 「 我 辦 事 你 放 心 」 的 神 情 說 ， 只 要 有 熟 人 在 醫 院 做 事 ， 要 拿 到 新 鮮 的 胎 盤 並 不 難 。 通 常 ， 他 們 都 習 慣 給 個 人 民 幣 幾 十 元 到 上 百 元 的 紅 包 ， 算 是 給 送 胎 盤 來 的 人 「 沾 沾 喜 氣 」 。
拿 著 一 個 血 紅 的 新 鮮 胎 盤 ， 真 不 知 如 何 是 好 ， 於 是 連 絡 阿 明 ， 麻 煩 他 帶 回 家 請 媽 媽 幫 忙 煲 湯 。 到 了 阿 明 家 才 知 道 ， 當 地 婦 女 常 會 煲 胎 盤 湯 給 家 人 喝 ， 幾 乎 是 家 家 戶 戶 的 家 常 菜 。 事 實 上 喝 胎 盤 湯 的 ， 並 不 侷 限 在 廣 東 一 地 ， 誤 以 為 我 們 喜 歡 而 幫 忙 張 羅 胎 盤 的 朋 友 ， 家 裡 請 的 湖 南 、 四 川 、 雲 南 員 工 ， 也 都 說 小 時 候 媽 媽 會 在 冬 天 做 這 道 胎 盤 湯 。
阿 明 說 ， 廣 東 一 般 餐 廳 的 菜 單 上 並 沒 有 這 道 菜 ， 不 過 ， 如 果 跟 廚 師 熟 識 ， 大 概 花 個 人 民 幣 兩 百 元 ， 就 可 央 請 廚 師 做 胎 盤 湯 。

食 補 壯 陽 功 效 的 迷 信 ， 讓 人 泯 滅 了 人 性

　

催 生 兒 　 性 別 定 生 死
隔 兩 天 ， 黎 師 傅 居 然 間 接 連 絡 我 們 ， 說 最 近 有 對 從 外 地 來 打 工 的 夫 妻 ， 現 在 已 經 懷 孕 八 個 多 月 了 ， 由 於 前 兩 胎 都 是 女 生 ， 再 過 幾 天 準 備 灌 鹽 水 催 生 ， 如 果 又 是 生 女 兒 ， 「 到 時 候 就 可 以 吃 了 。 」 黎 師 傅 說 來 輕 鬆 ， 我 們 卻 聽 得 手 腳 發 軟 ， 連 忙 堅 決 婉 拒 。
後 來 我 們 了 解 ， 廣 東 當 地 許 多 鄉 下 窮 苦 人 家 ， 或 是 到 城 裡 打 工 的 夫 妻 ， 多 生 之 後 ， 根 本 不 敢 上 醫 院 生 產 ， 深 怕 被 罰 錢 。 但 為 了 確 保 自 己 生 的 是 男 孩 ， 竟 等 到 九 個 月 大 再 催 生 ， 如 果 是 男 孩 留 著 還 養 得 活 ， 是 女 孩 就 算 墮 胎 ， 交 給 產 婆 「 自 行 處 理 」 。
真 是 「 上 有 政 策 ， 下 有 對 策 」 ， 北 京 當 局 為 遏 阻 墮 胎 ， 禁 止 以 超 音 波 判 別 胎 兒 性 別 的 政 策 ， 沒 想 到 民 間 竟 以 如 此 殘 忍 的 「 對 策 」 回 應 。
由 於 產 婆 都 會 告 訴 父 母 ， 胎 兒 是 送 給 好 心 人 士 收 養 ， 因 此 對 「 九 月 催 生 」 的 作 法 ， 父 母 內 心 並 沒 有 太 大 掙 扎 。 事 實 上 ， 窮 困 的 父 母 通 常 無 心 、 也 無 力 去 過 問 胎 兒 的 去 向 了 。

三 千 五 　 驚 見 嬰 兒 湯
調 查 採 訪 了 近 半 個 月 ， 有 關 吃 胎 兒 的 傳 言 ， 真 相 已 隱 隱 若 現 。 相 關 的 旁 證 言 之 鑿 鑿 ， 但 沒 親 眼 目 睹 ； 說 給 別 人 聽 ， 也 都 半 信 半 疑 。 事 實 上 ， 這 時 大 家 的 心 情 都 十 分 沉 重 ， 真 希 望 真 相 就 此 打 住 ， 因 為 內 心 深 處 實 在 不 能 接 受 真 有 如 此 滅 絕 人 性 的 情 事 。
「 不 幸 」 的 是 ， 幾 天 後 就 接 到 王 姓 商 人 的 電 話 ， 說 「 東 西 找 到 了 ， 天 氣 冷 ， 有 一 群 大 陸 朋 友 正 想 進 補 。 」 得 到 消 息 ， 我 們 內 心 十 分 掙 扎 ， 但 為 了 把 這 個 沒 有 人 性 的 真 相 公 諸 於 世 ， 控 訴 一 直 存 在 於 中 國 社 會 的 這 項 事 實 ， 決 定 要 求 王 姓 商 人 帶 我 們 去 。
王 姓 商 人 說 ， 他 會 想 辦 法 帶 我 們 去 。 王 姓 商 人 顯 然 沒 有 事 先 告 知 掌 廚 的 高 師 傅 ， 看 到 有 不 速 之 客 ， 高 師 傅 顯 得 有 些 緊 張 ， 一 再 交 待 ： 「 就 你 們 幾 個 知 道 ， 不 要 說 出 去 ， 會 出 事 的 。 」 我 們 編 說 是 上 海 公 司 的 秘 書 ， 董 事 長 對 嬰 兒 湯 進 補 有 興 趣 ， 叫 我 們 先 來 探 路 ， 並 拍 照 回 去 給 他 們 看 。
跟 胎 盤 湯 的 作 法 一 樣 ， 嬰 兒 湯 也 加 入 類 似 的 中 藥 材 、 雞 肉 、 排 骨 和 白 酒 ， 慢 火 燉 煮 八 個 小 時 。 五 十 多 歲 的 高 師 傅 每 年 冬 天 都 和 朋 友 一 起 吃 一 、 兩 次 嬰 兒 湯 ， 「 上 菜 」 時 ， 他 竟 還 有 點 歉 意 地 說 ： 「 六 個 多 月 ， 有 點 小 。 」
儘 管 高 師 傅 不 斷 遊 說 ， 但 說 什 麼 我 們 也 沒 有 勇 氣 嘗 試 。 當 高 師 傅 從 暗 褐 色 的 湯 汁 中 撈 出 胎 兒 時 ， 同 行 的 女 性 友 人 早 已 忍 不 住 胸 口 湧 現 的 噁 心 與 憤 怒 ， 衝 出 戶 外 去 了 。
六 個 月 大 的 女 嬰 ， 是 高 師 傅 託 朋 友 到 鄉 下 找 來 的 ， 高 師 傅 不 願 透 露 蒐 購 的 價 格 ， 只 說 胎 兒 價 碼 是 依 據 月 份 大 小 、 死 胎 或 活 胎 而 定 。 禁 不 住 我 們 一 再 追 問 ， 王 姓 商 人 表 示 ， 這 次 作 東 的 大 陸 友 人 付 了 人 民 幣 三 千 五 百 元 。

胎 嬰 的 清 洗 、 燉 煮 ， 令 人 不 忍 卒 睹 。

一 胎 化 　 見 幽 暗 人 性
據 了 解 ， 流 產 或 墮 胎 的 死 胎 ， 仲 介 人 就 包 給 產 婆 幾 百 塊 不 等 的 紅 包 。 若 是 接 近 足 月 引 產 的 活 胎 ， 則 要 付 給 小 孩 父 母 人 民 幣 一 、 兩 千 元 ， 當 作 是 收 養 小 孩 的 紅 包 。 不 過 ， 當 胎 兒 交 到 老 饕 手 中 時 ， 都 已 死 亡 ， 仲 介 人 會 加 收 一 、 兩 百 元 的 「 處 理 費 」 。
北 京 當 局 推 行 「 一 胎 化 」 政 策 多 年 ， 衍 生 出 來 的 社 會 、 人 權 問 題 不 少 ， 但 吃 胎 兒 ， 應 該 是 其 中 人 性 最 幽 暗 、 最 不 堪 的 一 角 了 。
至 於 ， 為 什 麼 廣 東 會 出 現 吃 胎 兒 的 歪 風 ， 相 關 人 士 都 說 不 出 所 以 然 來 。 高 師 傅 也 不 甚 了 然 ， 他 說 ， 大 概 是 先 有 吃 胎 盤 進 補 的 習 慣 ， 爾 後 有 少 部 分 的 老 饕 把 胎 盤 連 著 胎 兒 一 起 吃 ， 認 為 如 此 會 更 補 吧 ！ 他 哪 裡 知 道 ， 吃 嬰 這 種 令 人 髮 指 的 行 為 ， 其 泯 滅 人 性 的 程 度 ， 豈 能 用 任 何 理 由 交 代 。
很 難 估 計 ， 二 十 年 來 廣 東 一 帶 到 底 有 多 少 老 饕 吃 過 胎 兒 ， 我 們 也 不 清 楚 在 當 局 嚴 格 管 制 後 ， 目 前 還 有 多 少 人 吃 胎 兒 。 但 經 濟 的 發 展 ， 似 乎 並 沒 有 相 對 地 提 高 人 性 的 良 知 ， 「 人 的 價 值 」 、 「 生 命 的 尊 嚴 」 ， 依 然 淹 沒 在 廣 東 街 頭 喧 囂 的 車 流 、 人 群 中 。
