First, I have read from various sources that anywhere from 90 to 97 percent of the population lack the capacity to think for themselves.
Second, if many are predisposed not to think for themselves, are the chances of informing people through means other than emphatic, sleek nonsense? Huxley said that “so long as men worship dictators, Caesars and Napoleons will arise to make them miserable.†Many do not worship dictators per se, but merely one wing or another of the dictatorship, ergo I find this quote to be applicable.
What is the application in all of this? The approach of telling the truth and presenting people with facts, evidence, and other things that are uncomfortable will yield nothing, short of the 3-10% with the capacity to think for themselves. Even if they did think for themselves, what are the odds that they could be persuaded to get off their butts and do something? Given the inherent docility of human nature, and how many like to paint a nice little smiley face on everything and 'hope for the best', 10% would be generous. At most, this yields three million if one could reach 100% of the population. As it impractical to come to every biped in the country which does not cluck or squawk with this message, it becomes painfully clear that we need to win over some of the majority as well.
Thus, I propose that a 'noble lie' be fabricated that is tailor-made to the sensibilities of someone who has nothing to lose. The criteria are manifest given his nature: it must be simple yet plausible, and not touch upon mainstream taboos. The proposal is, in effect a creation of a paper Caesar for them to worship, and in doing so for us to use them to our ends.
