Obama pushes anew on fair, equitable pay for women

President Barack Obama is calling on Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, which he calls a common sense bill to ensure that women get paid as well as men for equal work.

The legislation would make it easier for women to sue employers who pay them less than men. The House passed the bill in 2009, but it failed to clear the Senate. Some Republican lawmakers have argued that the bill could aid trial lawyers more than it would help women.

The administration's Equal Pay Enforcement Task Force also recommended Tuesday that the federal government collect better data from businesses so it can more effectively track wage discrimination in the workplace.

More governmental control and more potential to sue?

How lovely.

We certainly need more of those in an economic downturn. :sarc:

What I don't understand about this is how do you know what everyone else is getting paid. I have no idea what anyone makes at my company. Hell I could be the least paid or the highest paid, I have no clue. How can someone come in and say that they make less than me? I agreed to take this job at the salary we negotiated. If I find out a year later that it's less than someone next to me, too bad. I obviously thought $X/year was good enough to sign the papers, so what right do I have to complain? Everyone else here went through the same process and agreed to their pay. If they thought the pay wasn't enough, then they shouldn't take the job.

It's not 1951 anymore. There are plenty of women CEO's, judges, politicians, etc. It's just playing the gender card. Let's all sue the last few decent companies out of business and collapse the US once and for all.

During this recession/depression, it has been the men who have lost the jobs.

Only 3 out of 10 lost jobs are female.

How about a bill calling for equality in layoffs??

Reminds me of an old joke:

Three women with the exact same credentials went to an interview for the same job.

Which woman got hired?

The one with the Biggest Boobs.

Which "better data" are they thinking is going to be effective? Just more stupid business-killing regulations coming down the pike.
