Abbas to Obama: I'm against lifting the Gaza naval blockade

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas is opposed to lifting the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip because this would bolster Hamas, according to what he told United States President Barack Obama during their meeting at the White House Wednesday. Egypt also supports this position.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu once more put off announcing the creation of a committee of inquiry into the naval commando raid on the Gaza Strip flotilla, and the matter will not be brought before the cabinet for a vote this morning.

This was the entire point of my "other" thread: the Palestinians are just as corrupt, even evil, as the Jews.

This fu*ker was ELECTED in a genuinely-democratic vote by the Palestinians, unlike what happens in "Western" countries.

Hamas take-over of the Strip

In June 2007, the Palestinian Civil War between Hamas (Islamic Resistance Movement) and Fatah (Palestine Liberation Movement) intensified. Hamas routed Fatah after winning the democratic election, and by the 14th of June, controlled the Gaza Strip. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas responded by declaring a state of emergency, dissolving the unity government and forming a new government without Hamas participation. PNA security forces in the West Bank arrested a number of Hamas members.

So is Gaza declaring independence from the State of Palestine (the bulk of which is the West Bank)?

There was no presidential election after 2005. Abbas remains the democratically-elected President of the State of Palestine. He received far more votes as a percentage than any of the last three US Presidents.

Abbas: No talks before stop of Jewish settlements in E Jerusalem
English.news.cn 2010-03-12 21:34:53

RAMALLAH, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will not accept resuming any talks with Israel before the latter stopping settlement construction in East Jerusalem, a senior Palestinian official said Friday.

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said in a press statement that Abbas informed the U.S. Middle East envoy George Mitchell that the talks with Israel will not be resumed until the latter withdraws its decision to construct 1,600 units in the Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem.

Erekat revealed that Abbas made his condition during a telephone conversation with Mitchell on Thursday night. He added that "President Abbas has clearly told Mitchell that resuming talks under such circumstances would be so difficult."

"President Abbas wants Israel to withdraw its decision to build 1,600 units in Jewish settlements in East Jerusalem and also wants guarantees not to make any settlement construction tenders in the future," said Erekat.

He added that the Palestinian side "is waiting for the U.S. official answer," before launching a proximity talks with Israel for four months to agree on the borders of a future Palestinian statehood.
