Falling behind on your bills? It could cost you a job.

An increasing number of employers are using credit checks to screen potential job applicants. So missed payments on your mortgage, car or credit card could keep you from getting hired.

According to a survey by the Society for Human Resource Management, 60% of employers are using credit checks when filling at least some of their openings. Only 35% reported checking credit in a 2003 survey, and only about 13% did so 1996.

The timing could not be worse.

"At exactly the time everyone's credit seems to be going down the toilet, more and more employers are using this," said Nat Lippert, research analyst for the union Unite Here. "You get in a Catch-22: You can't pay your bills because you don't have a job, and now you can't get a job because you can't pay your bills."

First Man:
I think...
I think I am.
Therefore I am!
I think...

Establishment:
Of course you are, my bright little star...
I've miles and miles of files
Pretty files of your forefather's fruit
And now to suit our great computer
You're magnetic ink!

First Man:
I'm more than that
I know I am...
At least, I think I must be

Inner Man:
There you go, man
Keep as cool as you can
Face piles of trials with smiles
It riles them to believe
That you perceive
The web they weave...
And keep on thinking free

Stupid passifist Boomers. Now look where all their hippy-drippy beliefs got them.

If they had actually bashed some establishment heads instead of just making a lot of rock'n roll noise and then assimilating into Yuppieville - they might now be at least free if not rich.

Now they're neither.

Fools.

If we, as private citizens, compiled dossiers on others, and used them to deny access to housing, jobs, and other things, we would be attacked by the government, and either killed or caged.

If the banksters did not own the government, these credit terrorists would have been shut down using RICO long ago.

You can though, if you are a landlord lets say, you can do a background check on your potential tenant and get his credit score, criminal history, etc. And then decide if you want to rent your property to them.

You don't have to TELL them that's the reason, just like you can't tell them you don't want to rent the house to them because they're purple. You could just say, "Uhh, it's been rented."

Nor do these companies, they just toss you back on the stack, no government agencies, no trials, just some observations and some good common sense. It's also common practice to anyone other than large corporate apartment owners.

Bad Credit = No mortgage, no renting an apartment, higher auto insurance and no job.

Hmmmmm..........cannot pay down debt and improve your credit record without earning an income from a job...........cannot get a job without a good credit score. Yep the job seekers' future is so bright that they have to wear shades. :sarc: :sarc: :sarc: :sarc: :sarc: :sarc:

I'd have to go find the story- I think I even posted it here to GSUS, but said a new trend is employers (sometimes quietly/unofficially) seeking new hires only from among those already currently employed -- IE unemployed are out of luck. I guess hiring employers figure that reduces their resume pile, and eliminates a bunch of things which might be "wrong" with the unemployed candidates.

Between that trend and the credit checks, the deck sure is stacked against the unemployed- which Shadowstats still puts at ~22% (http://www.shadowstats.com/alternate_data/unemployment-charts).
