On May 11, the White House announced it was targeting a new threat to America’s health and security. It wasn’t some rogue nation or terrorist organization, or a newfound disease or environmental threat. It was a class of chemicals that are making Americans fat. They’re called endocrine disrupting chemicals, or EDCs. And chances are you’re eating or drinking them right now.

The White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity released a report called "Solving the Problem of Childhood Obesity Within a Generation." In the report they list endocrine-disrupting chemicals as a possible reason for increased obesity in the country and describe how scientists have coined a new term for these chemicals — "obesogens" — because they "may promote weight gain and obesity."

What does this mean for you? It means that weight gain is not just about calories-in versus calories-out.

No, America’s obesity crisis can’t entirely be blamed on too much fast food and too little exercise. We have to consider a third factor: the obesogens. They’re natural and synthetic compounds, and many of these chemicals work by mimicking estrogen — the very hormone that doctors DON’T want women taking anymore (as a large clinical trial linked hormone therapy to increased risk of heart disease, breast cancer, stroke, blood clots and abnormal mammograms).

Why traditional diets don’t work anymore

Because high school biology was likely a while back, here’s a quick refresher: The endocrine system is made up of all the glands and cells that produce the hormones that regulate our bodies. Growth and development, sexual function, reproductive processes, mood, sleep, hunger, stress, metabolism and the way our bodies use food — it’s all controlled by hormones. So whether you’re tall or short, lean or heavy — that’s all determined in a big way by your endocrine system.

But your endocrine system is a finely tuned instrument that can easily be thrown off-kilter. "Obesogens are thought to act by hijacking the regulatory systems that control body weight," says Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., curators’ professor of biological sciences at the University of Missouri. That’s why endocrine disruptors are so good at making us fat — and that’s why diet advice doesn’t always work — because even strictly following the smartest traditional advice won’t lower your obesogen exposure. See, an apple a day may have kept the doctor away 250 years ago when Benjamin Franklin included the phrase in his almanac. But if that apple comes loaded with obesity-promoting chemicals — nine of the ten most commonly used pesticides are obesogens, and apples are one of the most pesticide-laden foods out there — then Ben’s advice is way out of date.

The obesogen effect is the reason why traditional diet advice — choose chicken over beef, eat more fish, load up on fruits and vegetables — may not work anymore. This is why we’re calling for a New American Diet.

See, while digging up all of this research on obesogens we’ve discovered some good news: There’s no reason why all of our favorite foods — from steak to burgers, from pasta to ice cream — can’t be part of a reasonable weight-loss program. We just need to get rid of old thinking. We can reverse the obesogen effect if we simply adopt these four simple laws of leanness:

Leanness Law No. 1: Know When to Go Organic
The average American is exposed to 10 to 13 different pesticides through food, beverages and drinking water every day and nine of the ten most common pesticides are EDCs. But according to a recent study in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives, eating an organic diet for just five days can reduce circulating pesticide EDCs to non-detectable or near non-detectable levels.

Of course, organic foods can be expensive. But not all organics are created equal—many foods have such low levels of pesticides that buying organic just isn’t worth it. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) calculated that you can reduce your pesticide exposure nearly 80 percent simply by choosing organic for the 12 fruits and vegetables shown in their tests to contain the highest levels of pesticides. They call them "The Dirty Dozen," and (starting with the worst) they are celery, peaches, strawberries, apples, blueberries (domestic), nectarines, sweet bell peppers, spinach, kale/collard greens, cherries, potatoes and grapes (imported). And you can feel good about buying the following 15 conventionally grown fruits and vegetables that the EWG dubbed "The Clean Fifteen," because they were shown to have little pesticide residue: onions, avocado, sweet corn (frozen), pineapples, mango, sweet peas (frozen), asparagus, kiwi fruit, cabbage, eggplant, cantaloupe (domestic), watermelon, grapefruit, sweet potatoes and honeydew melon.

Leanness Law No. 2: Don’t Eat Plastic
This ought to be a no-brainer. Indeed, you’re probably already thinking, Well, I don’t generally eat plastic. Ah, but you do. Chances are that you’re among the 93 percent of Americans with detectable levels of bisphenol-A (BPA) in their bodies, and that you’re also among the 75 percent of Americans with detectable levels of phthalates. Both are synthetic chemicals found in plastics that mimic estrogen — essentially, artificial female hormones. And like pesticides, these plastic-based chemicals trick our bodies into storing fat and not building or retaining muscle. Decreasing your exposure to plastic-based obesogens will maximize your chances both of losing unwanted flab and of building lean muscle mass. Here’s how: 1) Never heat food in plastic containers or put plastic items in the dishwasher, which can damage them and increase leaching. BPA leaches from polycarbonate sports bottles 55 times faster when exposed to boiling liquids as opposed to cold ones, according to a study in the journal Toxicology Letters. 2) Avoid buying fatty foods like meats that are packaged in plastic wrap because EDCs are stored in fatty tissue. The plastic wrap used at the supermarket is mostly PVC, whereas the plastic wrap you buy to wrap things at home is increasingly made from polyethylene. 3) Cut down on canned goods by choosing tuna in a pouch over canned tuna. And get any canned and jarred foods from Eden Organic, one of the only companies that doesn’t have BPA in its cans.

Leanness Law No. 3: Go Lean
Always choose pasture-raised meats, which, studies show, have less fat than their confined, grain-fed counterparts and none of the weight-promoting hormones. Plus, grass-fed beef contains 60 percent more omega-3s, 200 percent more vitamin E and two to three times more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA, a near-magic nutrient that helps ward off heart disease, cancer and diabetes, and can help you lose weight, according to a study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition) than conventional beef. If you must choose a conventional cut of beef, choose lean cuts top sirloin, 95 percent lean ground beef, bottom round roast, eye round roast, top round roast or sirloin tip steak. Bison burgers and veggie burgers are also great substitutes when grass-fed beef isn’t available. And select sustainable lean fish with low toxic loads (meaning low levels of toxins like mercury and PCBs). A study in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine found that even though the pesticide DDT was banned in 1973, the chemical and its breakdown product DDE can still be found today in fatty fish. Bigger fish eat smaller fish, and so carry a much higher toxic load.

Avoid ahi or bigeye tuna, tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel, marlin and orange roughy — and focus on smaller fish like anchovies, Atlantic herring and mackerel, and wild-caught Alaskan salmon. Choose farmed rainbow trout, farmed mussels, anchovies, scallops (bay, farmed), Pacific cod, Pacific Halibut, Tuna (canned light) and mahimahi. Also, when you cook the fish, broil, poach, grill, boil or bake instead of pan-frying — this will allow contaminants from the fatty portions of fish to drain out.

Leanness Law No. 4: Filter Your Water
The best way to eliminate EDCs from your tap water is an activated carbon water filter. Available for faucets and pitchers, and as under-the-sink units, these filters remove most pesticides and industrial pollutants. Check the label to make sure the filter meets the NSF/American National Standards Institute’s standard 53, indicating that it treats water for both health and aesthetic concerns. Try The Brita Aqualux ($28, brita.com), Pur Horizontal faucet filter ($49, purwaterfilter.com) and Kenmore’s under-sink system ($60, kenmore.com). However, if you have perchlorate (a component of rocket fuel!) in your water (you can find out by asking your municipal water supplier for a copy of its most recent water-quality report) you’ll need a reverse osmosis filter. But for every five gallons of treated water they create per day, they discharge 40 to 90 gallons of wastewater, so make sure it’s necessary before purchasing one.

Been losing 2 pounds per week by eating only one small nutritious meal and walking 30 minutes daily. A retired geezer Life makes this possible.

Water fasted for the first three days to get my body ready. Quart bowl of veggies/olive oil and either two eggs or a can of sardines. Then a bowl of watermelon or cantaloupe and a multivitamin-mineral for dessert. Around 800 calories total.

My goal is to lose a total of 14 pounds. I'm half way there.

Good luck with that.

Two years ago, I did the keto thing ala Mercola. Went from 293 down to 239.

Today I don't want to go close to a scale, it might bite me.

I would guess my weight at 270 now.

Going to start walking, now that the snow is gone.

My water filter is by McCanney. With corn and soybean fields all around me and all those chemicals farmer's use today I think I need it.

Reading from the top article Sweet Corn???

All the sweet corn around here is GMO which means it's loaded with crap.

the big lunch will carry you all the way to the night exercise. the nut-cutting is not eating between the exercise and going to bed.

I have been walking but my plantar fasciitis is a real pain. I have to quit drinking in order to lose any weight at all. When I drink I get calories from the beer and it also stimulates my appetite and decreases my will power; as a result I gain weight quickly. I love beer so there is no sense in switching to something else. I quit drinking beer and eventually the weight disappears. It is getting harder to lose weight as I age.

I wear the same size Wranglers I wore in 1985. When I was 40 I had a washboard stomach. I still do (LOL), but it's buried under a beach ball of insulation. Yesterday I quit a 2 week juice fast and got back down to 156 pounds from 165 so I'm good to go for the summer. I think fasting is a good idea even if you're right back to the beginning weight a week later, because the process of fasting helps you get rid of toxins.
Back when I drank beer daily (20 years ago), I never gained weight because beer satisfies the appetite and I was active. It's harder to stay active when you're older because of all the injuries and ailments.
When you drink beer, consider that the usual suspects own most of the breweries and disclosure of actual ingredients is not mandated. Just pop a top on a BPA lined can and think "ice cold carbonated formeldahyde beverage".

Time of the day goes by so fast that i get older, i can only fit in one main meal anymore. Couple hard boiled eggs for breakfast lasts me until a late lunch/dinner.

With an occasional fruit at any part of the day.

True about the mass produced beer. I drink mostly micro brew and European when I am drinking. It is expensive though and high in calories compared to the mass produced swill. Don't get me wrong though; I love cheap American lager too. Unlike you Hoarder, my appetite is stimulated by beer; So much so that I give in to craving that I would not if I were not drinking. I once had a washboard stomach but over the years it has turned into a washing machine drum.

I solved this serious problem by eating my one daily meal between 4-6pm. Not at all hungry in the evening. This results in very effective 22-hour Intermittent Fasting (https://www.google.com/search?biw=1920&bih=934&ei=P6S8XPjDBei1gge23pD4Dw&q=intermittent+fasting&oq=intermittent+fasting&gs_l=psy-ab.12...0.0..10525...0.0..0.0.0.......0......gws-wiz.JJ_lf95ogFo).

Losing weight might completely cure your plantar fasciitis. All of my overweight geezer peers have serious mobility issues with foot, ankle, knee, and hip pain. It's obviously the stress of the added weight.

Gym exercise by overweight people makes no sense to me. They are ALREADY lifting and carrying extra weight that taxes their heart.

I only walk a total of 30 minutes daily and still lose 2 pounds per week without stressing my heart. We can't "burn" off this fat without risking a heart attack

I did see a lady who did a massage on my foot. Not sure it helped. She showed me some exercise also. Have not gotten around to the exercise yet. It is done with a golf ball and also standing on stair tread to stretch the arch. Did you go more than once to the deep tissue massage?

I need to lose about 25 or 30 pounds. My target is 175 or 170. It sure feels good to be slim. It is amazing. Jewboo, that is an amazing graphic you posted. Really puts it into perspective.

Really puts it into perspective.Deep tissue massage only works if you go to someone powerful enough to do it right. No pain no gain. You can't lengthen fascia without pain. The golf ball and stair stretches are good too. When I had the heel spur, it took several half hour sessions to cure it. That was over a decade ago. The spur receded to it's original shape and never had another problem.

Fascia is all that white stuff on a skinned carcass that isn't fat. It's tough as kevlar. Do you know what Injuns used for bowstrings? Yup, fascia from along the spine.

I'm about where I want to be weight wise. I feel best when I weigh between 180 and 185. I weighed myself a little while ago after reading this thread and I weighed about 190. Took two guns out of my pockets but left the extra ammo there then took a .357 out of my holster on my hip and laid it down and I was weighing 186. Still had my knife and some heavy clothes so I'm probably at 185. I don't have a pot belly either ;D

I've been getting a lot of exercise lately day and night. I've been calving out 250 first calf heifers and they need to be watched all the time. One of my nephews is helping me and we check on them every one to two hours around the clock. We had a three day blizzard when they started calving with strong winds and about a foot and a half of snow. That was tough on everything. We needed to be up and horse back checking and taking care of them day and night because it was to hard to do it any other way. Hurt my shoulder and had to have my nephew saddle my horse for me. The older I get the harder it is to get on a horse. We have some headlamps that help a lot when we're horse back at night. A lot of the time I use a atv with a spot light too. .

We've each been eating about a pound to a pound and a half of hamburger a day, four or five good sized potatoes each and three eggs each a day with an apple or an orange. I've got a little coffee grinder and grind the beans to make coffee and I drink a lot of that. Neither one of us are gaining weight. I don't worry about having a heart attack but if I have one I hope it's a good one and I don't survive.

It's a Krups electric grinder. It doesn't grind to much at one time but it does a nice job. I like to grind mine fine. My coffee makers have the fine mesh filter and I use a paper filter too. I drink every drop that way. I'm hooked on the Dark Canyon Breakfast blend. Nice aroma and flavor that doesn't upset my stomach when I drink a lot.

The Krups doesn't cost to much and works well.

America's obesity epidemic, same said for diabetes, heart disease, osteoarthritis and cancer, is due primarily to mineral deficiencies. Hydroelectric power and damming of rivers plus the move from wood for fuel to electricity coupled with industrial farming has resulted in our topsoil having become utterly deficient in minerals, notably selenium (cancer), chromium and vanadium (diabetes mellitus), calcium (high blood pressure) and several dozen others. The human body requires 60 minerals to maintain health. If any one is missing for a prolonged time, several diseases will develop. Certainly all fast and processed foods are devoid of minerals. No organic vegetable is guaranteed to contain all 60 minerals unless the farmer has supplemented his soil with them. Very few places on earth naturally contain all 60 minerals. Therefore, you must supplement your diet with them. The rare earth minerals have been proved to fully double lifespan in several species - they are required in trace (microgram) amounts. Supplementing with just one mineral, selenium (as yeast or selenomethionine) at 200-400 mcg per day reduce your risk of virtually all cancers from 60-90%. In any event, dieting and exercise will not result in permanent weight loss unless these minerals are added to the diet and absorbed (i.e. you must eliminate all sources of gluten to be sure of normal absorption). In fact, exercising and dieting without supplementing these minerals could be dangerous. Also, virtually everyone is deficient in iodine and hypothyroidism is epidemic in women. Our salt was once iodized - it is no longer. Our flour was once iodized - now it is brominated. Bromine, chlorine and fluorine (tap water, tooth paste) are direct antagonists to iodine. Iodine is critical to far more than thyroid gland function - it has critical roles in immunity.

In any event, a clean diet of whole foods and pure water, devoid of processed and fast foods is a good start. But unless you supplement with the 90 essential nutrients (60 minerals; 16 vitamins; 12 amino acids), your results and long term health are at risk.

Used it for only three days then put it away. Too messy and too small. I instead started grinding whole beans at Albertson's grocery...will probably return to just buying already-ground PEETS coffee:

:D I'm lazier then I thought

I don't mind a little mess. I enjoy watching my grinder grind the beans and the aroma when I lift the lid off. I've got a little paint brush I brush it out with and a small container I put the ground coffee in. Here lately everything around me is a mess so a little spilled ground coffee is a minor thing. I really enjoy a good cup of coffee when I'm taking a break. I used to just buy the Folgers breakfast coffee but the fresh ground Dark Canyon coffee beans have spoiled me.

I've been working day and night and myself and everything around me is smeared and splattered with mud. I'd like to be lazy too but I can't be. I had my brother in law pick up a five pound bag of breakfast beans for me and I'm looking forward to the time spent grinding, brewing and drinking it. It's seventy miles to town so its not so easy for me to have fresh ground coffee if I don't grind it myself. :)

My Albertson's grocery store right across the street has a little inside Starbucks Coffee Shop and TWO brands of bulk coffee beans both with their own huge grinders.

:(??

40 drops equal the mineral content of 1/2 cup sea water with 99% sodium removed (https://www.amazon.com/Trace-Minerals-Research-Concentrace-Mineral/dp/B000AMUWLK/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_sims?ie=UTF8&th=1)

:(?? tastes terrible according to the buyers

I have ground my own for too many years now. The commercial bulk ground just isn't the same. I dig the dark espresso. The store is 140 steps from work. :)

Just was looking around to see if there was a thread on the " Keto diet " , that is, the ketogenic diet. I have some long-time experience on and off over the years with this diet and can offer some I think helpful insights - pro and con.

The originally posted article was very good but was looking for it on yahoo original site so could copy it without all the html codes showing but no luck yet.

Will wait and see if there is enough interest for me to start a new Keto diet thread in this health part of the forum where everyone can give their input pros and cons as well as ask questions.

Keto diets are back in style these days. There is a "Dr. Berg" on YouTube, a chiropractor I think, who now has put together an expensive packaged program for all the ins and outs on being on this diet. I did not even to check to see the price of his new program but I bet it is steep.

The whole area of diet and how to lose and maintain weight really should have several strict sub-categories to guard against thread drift as happened in this thread.

By the way, if you are on a strict keto diet (very low carb) you need to be really careful about just deciding to do it up big and drink a lot of alcoholic beverages in one sitting. It is very hard on the kidneys and liver when you are in ketosis and you will start feeling bad right after when you do this. Now I think this goes for beer as well as hard liquor.
But beer has a lot of carbs compared to straight shots of hard liqueur so the way it affects the organs and makes you feel can be different.

One thing for sure you will go out of ketosis all of a sudden big time with beer and hard liquor with mixer that has sugar in it, and you will have to start all over on a strict keto diet to get yourself back into ketosis. (Drinking straight hard liquor is no problem in regard to ketosis, as I recall. Look up "the drinking man's diet." )
