I was reading about "Korean tacos" online yesterday. I might have to try a batch. Or two. Or three. Or....
I need to stop by the local Korean store and get some gochujang.

Here's the main article:

Thanks for your useful reply to my thread.

Umm...I put the word "taco" in quotes, suggesting to the discerning reader that it's not quite exactly a taco. Sort of a taco-like object, using Korean spiced goodies. Much like the "California Roll" served in a Japanese restaurant, it's not a traditional dish, but one adapted for American tastes.

My first batch of Korean "taco" meat (note the quotes) turned out pretty lousy. Waaaay too sweet. the gochujang I used was sweet & gummy (yuck!), and even with a reduced amount of sugar in the recipe, it was too darn sweet. Next time I'll try a different gochujang & hold out the sugar (maybe add after tasting). Probably need to brown the meat & cook till semi-tender before proceeding with the rest of the recipe.

With weather getting cooler, it's probably time to break out the crock & start a batch of winter kimchi.

Korean tacos use a type of BBQ beef called Bulgogi. Bulgogi is usually served alone, as a ribs dish, so calling it a "taco" was just a next logical step by incorporating the meat and a tortilla.

You can recognize them because they cut the ribs sideways.

It's some of the best beef I've had.

Korean bbq is great. They have been springing up here for the last few years. Interesting flavours and you cook at your own table. Not always the case but most places you can choose to sit around a big hot plate while the chef cooks and puts on a show or they bring burning coals the hot plate on your table. Don't do it enough. Might have to put it on this years eat out list over christmas.
