View Full Version : Gold Foil - how to source it? Is this a good deal?

Greetings,
I am looking to buy some gold foil, for use in jewerly, but I am unaccustomed to purchasing gold that has no weight attached to it. After searching the net, I found very few reliable sources. One that looked potentially legit was here: http://cgi.ebay.com/24K-Real-Gold-Leaf-100-Sheets-Gilding-Framing-Art-Craft-/320370550013?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4a9792a4fd#ht_3376wt_833 but that being said, I don't totally trust ebay.
I'm asking Gold-Silver.us to critique. I haven't found any websites that look trustworthy so far, and have all their prices displayed. If anybody has a reliable hookup for gold foil, I'd love to see it.
On the site I posted above, its only $180.00 for 1,000 sheets of 3.3cmx3.3cm each. That's not bad for 1,000 sheets of CPU-sized sheets. That's only $0.18/sheet, I can see myself using 5 sheets in a pendant or some such, for under a dollar.
The gold is only for jewerly making, not for investment or buillion purposes. But for the scope of what I am doing, the more pure the gold, the better.
What do you think? Any suggestions? Or should I just make my own gold foil with a bottle of whiskey, an ounce of bullion, and a hammer? : )

Looks legit as far as ebay goes. No clue what to tell you besides give the 14.99 a try and see if it works out.
Good luck!

I'm not a frequent eBayer so it is actually quite helpful to have a 2nd set of eyes review the page. Thank you

Send a PM to Saul TNE, he knows a lot about gold foil IIRC.

Excellent idea. I believe he is where I got the idea of making my own with a hammer and a glass of whiskey. He does seem to have an exceptional amount of knowledge in fields like this, so I will bother him a little bit.

Making some fancy pants orgonite?
It is my new favorite hobby too.
Please let the board know if you find a good source, I would love to put some 24k in my pendants without drilling a bar.

NE; I just showed that aution to my wife. The 1st thing she said was..."the seller is in Thailand"
And the price makes it seem questionable...However she is now buying some from that seller :D
Just so she can find out how good the stuff is.
No doubt it is extremely thin (don't touch it with your hands)

it seems so affordable. the pieces must be really thin. i didn't see any thicknesses like ".001 inch".
i wonder how much they weigh too.
i remember making copper foil by putting pennies on the railroad track.

Thanks! I really appreciate the replies. The gold foil from that seller is beyond thin, but the price is alright. I'll eagerly await your wife's report. I think I'll buy from the site you linked me to, first.
And yeah, this is for some rinky dinky high end orgonite, like personal home pieces. There's no metal in the world like gold!

Most of the metals list the weight of how much 1000 leaves weighs, to help make thickness comparisons. Also listed are the metal's purity, quantity of sheets per book and sheet size.

I bought some "23 karat" gold foil on Ebay and it turned out to be copper and zinc. There doesn't seem to be any way to know what you are getting, so I simply would not buy there again.

My wife got that gold leaf that was in the OP
She is happy with it. said it was better than she thought it would be for the price.
It does what it should do in the fire.
