The system that zombies of past generations allowed the .gov to create requires them to spend spend spend.
If they didn't, it would've already crashed long ago.

i.e. if you won't sign enough promisory notes in order to keep sufficent liquidy in the economy, the .gov will sign them in your name instead.

All it would've required is an honest interest in knowing what's being done in their names and why.

However, it's always been easier to let oneself become distracted by the amusements of the day called life.
