the trend seems to be pretty clear - prices are pushed down below $1200 during options expiration week, following the calendar in this other thread -

http://gold-silver.us/forum/gold-silver-precious-metals/metals-calendar-futures-options-dates/msg80874/#msg80874

e.g. options expiry was July 28 & will be August 27.

so we can expect a gold/silver "peakette" (mini-peak, i don't know if it will top $1260) about Friday August 13.

unless of course ... the Fed officially announces QE2 (Quantitative Easing). it would be interesting if they announce that on August 26. I don't know what their MO is for timing these announcements.

they seem to sweep most of the news about money-printing under the rug, only to be un-covered later by financial detectives like Carl Denninger.

but every once in a while the Fed seems compelled to make the "official announcement" about QE, like they did March 18, 2009.

Pierre Lasonde, long-time gold industry guy (ex-President of Newmont, etc.) also talks a little about early summer softness in the metal markets in his recent interview at King World.
