Some are using this opportunity to upgrade. Shawnetta Newburn left a drug-infested St. Louis neighborhood for Henderson, Nev., a Vegas suburb. She now lives in a gated community with a sparkling swimming pool. Her three-bedroom home has soaring ceilings, a gas-fueled fireplace and an enclosed toilet room, something more common in mini-mansions.
“The only time I ever saw that was on TV or something,†she says during a tour of the approximately 2,000-square-foot home. “I never thought I’d have anything like this.â€
The change marks one of the most dramatic shifts since the 1974 creation of Section 8, nicknamed after its location in the U.S. Housing and Community Development Act. The $18.1 billion Housing and Urban Development program offers more than 2 million families the chance to live outside of housing projects. Recipients pay a certain percentage of their income, typically no more than 30%, each month. The government directly deposits the payment, so landlords don’t have to fret about late rent or bounced checks.
About half of Ms. Newburn’s rent is covered. In Las Vegas, Serena Jefferson, a mother of seven, pays $400 a month for her “awesome†five-bedroom home with a tiled walk-in shower. The government covers $1,400, she said.

We (the taxpayers) are paying $1,400 to $1,600 a month around here for unemployable single moms with lots of children (three children will get you $1,400, while 5 children will get you $1,600). It's still not a "nice" neighborhood as far as I am concerned, but hey, it's free.

K,
Its funny you mention that. I think I may have mentioned to you before, but there is a single mom in my neighborhood. She has 5 kids, is on welfare, food stamps, SSI for her and a couple of her kids and section 8. They pay 100% of her rent, at 1,500$ a month and she also gets help with the bills like electric, etc. (shes white, for those of you wondering).
Now, you've been in my neighborhood, its not exactly a poor neighborhood, or one where you would expect ANY section 8 people to be living in. Im fairly certain shes NOT the only one.........

You live in a nice neighborhood! You know, I think everyone would be surprised at how much freebies their neighbors are getting (and that we're paying for). It's not like people go around bragging about food stamps or any sort of public assistance.

Most dont. This one does though. Shes was bragging about trying to get her son, 13 years old, Baker Acted by the courts because hes a little off his rocker (and he is) and she cant deal with him anymore and shell get disability on him if he gets taken away.
The police are there at least once a week because of crap between her and her other psycho neighbor and the rest of the neighborhood is getting PISSED at the whole thing.
I think a big part of it too is the housing downturn. So many home owners put their places up for rent, or rental properties became vaccant that the renters just started taking anyone no matter what, as long as they had cash in hand. This coincided with section 8 removing housing limits and letting people live anywhere a renter would accept section 8. And wham, you've got section 8 people living in upper middle class neighborhoods and landlords who dont give a damn because its that or forclosure.
