FEMA may have a mostly-deserved poor reputation, but there is no denying these materials are of great use in giving neighbors and others a blueprint for making basic preparations...

ready.gov basics:

http://www.ready.gov/america/_downloads/Ready_OrderForm_May10.pdf (fax order form - items are free of additional charge, you paid on April 15th)

http://www.ready.gov/america/publications/allpubs.html (descriptions and downloads of same)

Even more stuff:

http://www.fema.gov/library/index.jsp

Downloadable and orderable in hard copy.

If you can get your neighbors to make basic preparations, it will only do you well if TSHTF, since they'll be less likely, or less quick, to come pounding on your door.

Thank you. We need to approach my Mom about preps, and something from .gov may be more appealing to her; than hearing it from us.

Omission is the key.

Read through it and figure out what essential information was omitted. It might be very telling!

The discussion of firearms is the only thing I notice that's missing.

For much of the population, unfortunately that is a subject they don't want to think about. At least yet.

Get them started with the ready.gov materials, and breach that obstacle later.

It'd be kinda funny if they didn't mention "water" or something equally important.

I remember shortly after the "anthrax" attacks (which were traced to a military base, by the way -> http://www.8newsnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=587892 ), the gov't recommended ducttaping windows and doors to protect from airborne hazards.

lol

No, they're pretty thorough, minus the self-defense aspect. Although the minimum recommendation is really a joke: 3 days. Some publications emphasis "more is better" (no shit).

I laughed at Tom Ridge back then, too, but, duct tape and plastic sheeting is actually marginally useful in case of an aerosol attack.
