View Full Version : Why are people freaking out?

k-os
10th August 2010, 06:46 AM
I woke up this morning, and it looked like a tropical storm outside. I turned on the TV to see the news. (I own a TV, I just don't typically use it.)

In the five minutes that I watched the local news waiting for the weather part . . . there were all of these stories of people freaking out:

1) Airline steward who freaked out (http://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/jetblue-attendant-flies-off-handle-after-passenger-ignores-him-1.2194616)
2) Chicken McNugget Nut Chick (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/10/earlyshow/main6759567.shtml) (must see)
3) Olive Garden Attack (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/palm-beach/fl-restaurant-rage-autism-20100809,0,6084633.story) (white on black, might I add).

My question is, are people getting crazier and crazier? I am traumatized by this morning's local news and the smiles on the newscasters faces as they report it. The contrast is disturbing.

Or, are we just seeing more crazy people because of the 24 news cycle, the prevalence of phones that capture video, etc.?

I would like to believe the latter, but there seems to be compelling evidence that people are (in general) going insane.

The good news is, it's not a tropical storm, just some low pressure in the Gulf causing the wind and rain. ;D

Personally, I think it's mostly the latter. The more time there is to report, the more that'll get reported.

Also, "news" by definition is what's not usual.

So the real time to worry is when the news is full of only good news, as that means it'll be unusual.

Yep. I concur.
Carbons advice works wonders. It's nice not being bombarded with commercials.
Works for radio too. If you want music, use the interwebs instead of 3 songs followed by 10 commercials you get on terrestial radio. And it's free for the price of an IP#
If it's weather you need, you can get that online too, straight from the horses mouth. http://www.weather.gov/

Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
I guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing

Hi yo I got plenty of time
Hi yo you got light in your eyes
And you're standing here beside me
I love the passing of time
Never for money
Always for love
Cover up and say goodnight . . . say goodnight

Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home - she lifted up her wings
I guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time Before we were born
If someone asks, this is where I'll be . . . where I'll be

Hi yo We drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home and
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head Ah ooh

Here's where I was raised.

1) Airline steward who freaked out (http://www.newsday.com/news/new-york/jetblue-attendant-flies-off-handle-after-passenger-ignores-him-1.2194616)

The Negress who hit him in the head with her luggage, after refusing to obey his valid order to sit down during taxi, was his last straw.

He didn't hurt anyone - in fact was victimized himself - yet he's the one facing 5 felony counts.

2) Chicken McNugget Nut Chick (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/08/10/earlyshow/main6759567.shtml) (must see)

3) Olive Garden Attack (http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/palm-beach/fl-restaurant-rage-autism-20100809,0,6084633.story) (white on black, might I add).

Oooh, a White man imitates chimp out after being unable to enjoy a meal in peace & quiet.

For real chimp outs, click here.

It used to be that parents had the common sense to take their children home if they would not behave in public (the "autism" excuse is not a valid one). But now, those with minority status or "disability" status - or, in this case, both - feel "entitled" to disturb whomever they like.

My question is, are people getting crazier and crazier?

No, in two cases above, people's tolerance for TNB has dropped to record lows due to the overall social stresses from the economy. In the other, a Wigger tweaker couldn't get her fix.

Or, are we just seeing more crazy people because of the 24 news cycle, the prevalence of phones that capture video, etc.?

No, social order is indeed disintegrating.

I would like to believe the latter, but there seems to be compelling evidence that people are (in general) going insane.

Your first instinct is correct. More people are Falling Down.

No Talmudvision is always excellent advice.

However, TNB/chimp outs, and even Whites losing their cool, is on the upswing, it's not just the media. I see it in public. We've had to direct our family away from it, one hand on what we carry, the other hand waving the kids out.

Rogue JetBlue attendant: Hero or villain?

By Ben Mutzabaugh, USA TODAY

"The flight attendant who slid off a landed plane via inflatable slide at JFK Monday after telling a disrespectful passenger to f--- off is already a folk hero."

That's from the New York Daily News, which is among several media outlets reporting that the dramatic outburst and exit from JetBlue from Steven Slater has helped turn him into something of a working-class hero.

The Associated Press adds that "by Monday night, several Facebook pages had been set up in tribute to Slater, with many users of the social networking site expressing support for him for walking off the job."

Joanna Molloy suggests in her Daily News column that "it's part of the frustration all over the country as employees take pay cuts and have to do double the workload as they take on the responsibilities of their laid-off co-workers."

As for the pressure felt by flight attendants, The New York Times writes "it has been a long time since flight attendant was a glamorous job title. The hours are long. Passengers with feelings of entitlement bump up against new no-frills policies. Babies scream. Security precautions grate but must be enforced. Airlines demand lightning-quick turnarounds, so attendants herd passengers and collect trash with the grim speed of an Indy pit crew. Everyone, it seems, is in a bad mood."

Which leads us to this latest incident, of which at least one other flight attendant understands.

"Enough is enough — good for him," Janet Bavasso, a former attendant and Slater's neighbor, tells the Times. "If he would have called me, I would have picked him up" at the airport after the incident.

I am not into astrology at all, but I found myself nodding at most everything this guy says:

It seems that lately my patience is constantly tried: cars cutting me off, people in the way at the grocery, bitchy friends, problems at work, etc.
I have noticed that it seems I am in a trial of focus, I can either freak out like most folks, or try to find compassion and let it all roll off my back.
Maybe others are in this period too, maybe it is caused by Mars, or maybe poverty is directly proportional to freakouts.

That choice is always yours to make. If you let someone else make it for you, who's really in charge of you?
...and the flight attendant? He waaay over-reacted.
If he wanted to quit, he had 2 choices at that point.
1. Quit after his flight and be free. {it was minutes from being over}
2. Do what he did and also go to jail.

Which would you do?

Besides, no one "made" him do that job. He chose it.

The national news is designed to make you think that the people running this country are all benevolent and competent, and that you should trust them and obey them.

The local news follows a national agenda for local news. That agenda is to scare the living bejeezus out of you with stories of crime and perversion, so that you do not feel safe--to raise you anxiety level so you think you need more police, more government and more jails. I don't know where this agenda comes from, but if you watch the local news with a critical mind, you will see how subtle the propaganda is and how it sneaks up on you because most people don't have any other source of information on local events. The dead giveaway is when something newsworthy happens that you see with your own eyes, and then you watch the reporting on TV, and it is something completely different from what you saw and concluded.

"Why are people freaking out?"

I'm sure the two census workers yesterday at the front of my place who flashed me their Fed Ids thinking it would warm me up after saying hi as a stranger, and asked me how many residences on site (to send census forms to) probably said the same thing afterwards.

I did not freak out or make it personal as I told them why I would not give them an answer, but I cold tell they were a little freaked out as she mumbled a response. ;D

I lived like a free man yesterday. One day at a time eh?

For the rest of the world: 2. :)

While I consider all answers offered above as valid I'd like to offer another.

The MSM also likes to keep stupid sheep ignorant of their MSM created intelligence by going out of the way to find even less intelligent people to interview and read teleprompt. That way the dumb person is happy to be on TV others are happy to be thinking how smart they are.

That is the way to be Ponce.
I have found that if I worry about something my worries manifest as reality.
If I am content to let things play out, they usually work out OK in the end.
I am still here after all, healthy and breathing, despite all the countless hours I used to spend obsessing and worrying.
Worry is nothing but wasted energy.

On a serious note, I think it is very necessary new shooters to learn two very important skills that I got only in the Marines.

Fire and Maneuver- If you are sitting you are dead. " I am up, they see me, I am down."

My neighbor across the street just freaked on me last week after misinterpreting a comment I made suggesting that the guy who indicated interest in buying their 23 yr old stay-at-home son's SUV may have been the one who broke into it and stole several thousand worth of stereo equipment. She thought I was making a comment on the quality of his friends but I don't judge and have never shown them anything but kindness and respect. She knocked on my door and went on a tirade about my treatment of and comments about their family and friends while I tried to assure her I've said absolutely nothing and have nothing but love for them all. Now the whole family is pissed at me and ignores my greetings.

Rogue JetBlue attendant: Hero or villain?

You could ask him.
Here's his own words about the type of situation he freaked out over.

"To stand there and flex my muscles by getting into an altercation just makes me look stupid and creates anxiety for my passengers," he wrote in response to a 2008 posting by someone who had a run-in with a flight attendant.
"She obviously lost the very composure she was hired to have. ... Unprofessionalism is unacceptable, and you don't speak to people that way. Period." (http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2010/08/11/2010-08-11_carryons_were_biggest_turnoff.html)

Sounds to me as though he'd say "villain", Phoenix.

He also said, "I have the best job in the world,".

Not anymore.

As soon as the incident happened with the passenger, he could have have had her charged with a crime and arrested.
If the woman caused that much of a problem for him, all he had to do was notify the pilot to tell the tower to have security meet them at the gate.
Here's a video of how it's supposed to work. (http://www.nastecaviation.com/Docs/SEQ_3.wmv)

Oh well, maybe next time.

I used to carry around the tuna packages (crackers, tuna, mayo). When they were getting turned down more than accepted, I stopped giving.

My heart has hardened over the years to panhandlers. Now the only people I give to on street corners are kids (car wash), uniformed firefighters (charity), uniformed military (charity). I still give to Goodwill and Salvation Army, and I just discovered freecycle, which is fun. I know that the panhandlers will not starve. I know this, because I have volunteered at facilities that feed, bathe and clothe the poor. No one will starve in the USA unless they want to.

At least not now.

I ask why they want it; if they say food, that's what they get.

sometimes i offer them a bottle of water. don't get many takers.

i used to have a routine when i lived in San Francisco. you need "routine" there, so many aggressive panhandlers. i would just stop and ask them, "are you a Windows person or a Mac person ?"

it was like hitting them upside the head. they'd stop and think, and in that half second i'd disappear into the crowd.

one time, this young guy outside a housing project who was trying to market the services of a young lady supposedly holed up in a nearby room, stopped and said, "nobody's ever asked me that". he was visibly touched. i told him the names of all the computer clubs and how he could get started with computers on a budget. while i stood there, i kept wondering, "am i going to get hit by a ricocheting bullet while i'm talking to this guy about computers ?" if there was a young lady in a nearby hotel room, she was probably getting a little impatient.

Here is my routine:

Damn, there's a stand off in Tustin CA right now. A guy is getting evicted, and this morning the repo man came for his car, so the guy took the U-Haul truck he had to move and rammed the tow truck. Now there's a stand off, hopefully the commies don't call in SWAT to dispatch this guy. People are loosing it. :redfc

My experience is that people are more docile than ever. Too many cows, not enough bulls in this herd of cattle that I belong to.

No one will starve in the USA unless they want to.

Including preferring liquor or drugs over food.

Hypothetically speaking of course, but if you were chronically homeless wouldn't you want to be blasted out of your mind all the time, too? lol

Nearly all people are "chronically homeless" because they prefer liquor or drugs to a more stable life.

As a social worker, I tried desperately but in vain, to save drunks from themselves. I couldn't make them want to have a better life. So "let them die" is about all you can do, try to be nice to them so they're more comfortable in their lingering death.

I agree that some can't (or really, just WON'T) be saved, at least not until they are ready to save themselves, but the A.A. folks would call you an "enabler".

My duty was to help them maintain the highest standard of "living" possible, given that SSI was usually their only income, no landlord wanted them for very good reason, and overpriced motels were their only options for the first 1/3 or so of the month. If I could "help" them spend most of their money on a motel, it was less for their booze. And I figured that was a, however small, accomplishment. But yeah, the AA people would say it was "enabling" them.

The one case that still bothers me, when I think about it, was a guy who died under a bridge, alone. How pathetic. I still remember the phone call.

If people think I'm a heartless son of a bitch because of my opinions, that's OK, because God and the people who matter know better. My callousness is probably largely due to what I've "seen" in my life, making most things people call "problems" mean nothing to me. Jaded? Yeah. :D

A guy at work had a meltdown yesterday,
screaming and freaking out, throwing stuff around, then walked off the job.
He's been here over 5 years with no incidents at all.

There is something in the air, try to be civil to others, they may just snap and make your life way more complicated than you want it to be.

Still seems like the universe is trying to frustrate me into freaking out, but one theme has emerged:
just go one step further, try a little bit harder, and things become right again.

Blatant propaganda to stir up road warrior type society while the state & law enforcement still have a firm grasp of the situation.

Their program = their schedule.
