A resident of a public housing complex said the manager recently told tenants not to buy items from thrift stores because they might be infested with bed bugs.
“I question this because public housing residents are often too poor to shop at conventional stores. I am one of them,†the resident wrote. “If such a judgment about thrift stores and garage sales is made, it should have solid scientific backing.â€Â
Jeff Hahn, an entomologist at the University of Minnesota, said bed bugs can be spread in many ways, including from people sitting in theaters and airplanes. But he said thrift store shoppers can protect themselves by putting clothing in plastic bags and washing the clothing immediately in hot water. Read more tips about preventing bed bugs here.
New York City officials recently announced a strengthened effort to deal with the pests after several stores closed in the wake of bed bug infestations.
Do you think it’s fair to prohibit shopping at thrift stores?

Well, the microwave oven works wonders on bugs........even the two legged ones.

All products from thrift stores used by this household are thoroughly disinfected before use. Bed-bugs? Hardly a threat! Just wash, with bleach or H2O2, and then dry them with high heat. No more bugs.
We've seen some pretty disgusting things at Goodwill. When we were looking for a suit for my son a few months ago, I was standing nearby near the women's aisle, and saw a pair of white pants with some "stains" in the crotch area. Didn't look like baked-in "stains," but unwashed "stains."

For most textiles too big or too flimsy for washing & drying, use a steamer.

It seems like there are a lot more reports of bedbugs in the last few years. One article I read blamed it on people using more green methods of pest elimination instead of stuff that works like DDT. :o

Call me a heartless bastard, but if you need someone to tell you to buy or not buy something perhaps sleeping on a matress is not for you. AKA take charge of your life.
Billy Grahm said I needed to send him my life savings so he can buy a new car once uppon a time.
Guess what? I did not do it.

A lack of human hygiene (in the literal and figurative sense) is the problem, not a lack of pesticides. Hot drying, among the most "environmentally friendly" methods, will kill any insect.
My wife & I were talking about this this evening. The kids are on vacation with Grandma, and she picked Motel 6. I told her that was a good choice, since Motel 6 is corporate staffed, usually by White people. I've never been in a Motel 6 that smelled like Pakistan. Most motel/hotel beds and bedding have "little friends" waiting to munch on your dead skin cells.
The rise of bed bugs is due entirely to the decline in sense and practice of hygiene. "People" are filthy nowadays, many of the White ones, but mostly the Turd Worlders. Bed bugs, food-borne illnesses, once-eradicated pathogens like measles, the arrival of the Turd World in America is what you can thank for those. More of the "benefits" of Diversh*tty.

What the hell are you doing working at the 'Goodwill' Phoenix?
Or perhaps you could use a break from it.
_________
I've read recently the new standard for roach control uses less toxic more direct approach.
The old approach also used to control bedbugs.
