Architects lament demise of Wonders - Memphis Business Journal [2006] (http://www.bizjournals.com/memphis/stories/2006/05/29/focus1.html?page=2)

While there is no one reason for the demise of Wonders, Pounders says that whenever an exhibit didn't cover costs of travel, exploration and production, someone had to subsidize it, and that was usually the city. He also says that as successful as the exhibits were, if they had drawn locally as well as tourists, they could have been even more successful.

"You bring in 600,000 visitors and most of them weren't from Memphis, that was frustrating," he says. "We could have drawn over 2 million people if Memphians had shown up."

NASA is expected to make an announcement Thursday on the progress of its Kepler spacecraft, which has been staring at one patch of space for evidence of other worlds.

The space agency has scheduled an afternoon teleconference with reporters to announce the results from Kepler, which include the "discovery of an intriguing planetary system," NASA officials said Monday.

Participating in the teleconference will be senior NASA scientists and Kepler mission researchers, including principal investigator William Borucki, at the space agency's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.

Iran says it test-fires new missile
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran said Wednesday that has it successfully test-fired an upgraded version of a short-range surface-to-surface missile.

Defense Minister Gen. Ahmad Vahidi said the third generation of the Fateh-110, which means "conqueror" in Farsi and Arabic, is equipped with a high accuracy guidance control system. He said the solid-fuel missile was developed by Iran's Aerospace Industries Organization and tested Wednesday.

Upgrades to the missile increases its range from previous versions, Vahidi said, without providing any further details. Earlier versions of the Fateh-110 could strike targets up to 120 miles (193 kilometers) away. Iran has had the missile for several years.

S Korea accuses North of military buildup

soldiers and arms stationed near the capital Pyongyang.

In a report to the country's parliament, the ministry said that the North has moved a large number of troops, armored vehicles and artillery near Pyongyang in the last month and a half.

"The massive deployment of troops could be designed to show their military power at home and abroad, or for security," a ministry spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.

South Korean officials say the deployment may be related to upcoming political events in North Korea on October 10.

Key communist party members will come together in Pyongyang next month as the party's 65th anniversary will be held on October 10.

South Korea, meanwhile, has warned that its military forces will launch a powerful counter-attack if the North fires across the disputed sea border.

Defense Minister Kim Tae-Young says based on a new military directive, South Korean troops will take action against any hostile move by Pyongyang's army.

"The order was in line with new combat policy for South Korean troops guarding the volatile sea border," he told a parliamentary defense committee.

The report of the South's buildup comes amid growing tensions between the two countries after the South accused the North of torpedoing one of its warships in March that left 42 sailors dead. The North denied the allegation.

The United States and South Korea then held joint naval exercises off the east coast of the Asian country, unleashing a wave of reactions from Pyongyang, who vowed to mount a "physical counterattack" in response to the drill.
