NOGALES, Ariz. (KGUN9 TV) - The red hot issue of illegal immigration has made its way to the Little Red School House, and now that school is taking steps to protect itself in the form of a big silver fence topped in places with barbed wire.
The fence has everyone talking.
"It's for the kids!" said parent Miguel Delara. "Anything that's for the kids should be no questions asked! No questions asked whatsoever as long as kids are safe. I have five kids in school, and I don't want nothing to happen to them, you know?"
Parents told KGUN9 News the 7-foot fence is supposed to keep illegal immigrants and smugglers from coming down the nearby mountain sides and onto school grounds.
"Because you're so close to border do you feel like you need fence to feel more secure?" KGUN9's Joel Waldman asked students. "Yeah!" answered 12-year-old student Gregory Zapata. "‘Cause people are crossing over with drugs, and we need to be safe because they go through the school."
Said parent Irma Carillo, "Our kids are always coming home going, ‘Mom they got somebody else! Mom they were chasing somebody!'"
But, parents said the school also put up the fence to keep out those doing the chasing. "It's not only to keep illegal immigrants out, but it's also to keep Border Patrol out because CBP was chasing people across the school!" said Carrillo.
The Little Red School House hopes this fence serves as a big test for all to fail if they're trying to get on school grounds.
The school board approved the fence in July. It will connect to an existing four-foot fence that runs along some fields in the rear of the property.
On Wednesday schools superintendent James Cruice was not available for comment.
U.S. Rep Raúl Grijalva plans to visit the school on Thursday morning.
