the only reason Laird Hamilton can do that safely is because he's been preparing for about 40 years. one of the best articles i've seen on the surf spot. like he said, it looks like a comic book.

i'm too lazy to quote all your posts in one post.
my fear about this site was realized about 3 or 4 years ago, when one of the local pros got the "coke bottle treatment".
it breaks on a coral reef, which is full of nooks and crannies. it is almost like a 3D fractal with sharp edges, it has so many caves and potholes and most of them have sharp edges.
by "coke bottle treatment", i mean, the guy's head goes in the hole in the reef, and the wave moves his body, which is really hard on the neck.

in the "old days", coke bottles were glass and the top was a metal cap. you would stick it in the machine and twist the bottle, and the top comes off.
so, ever since this spot came into focus at a WQS (surfing minor league, to use the baseball metaphor) tournament in about 1999, when the waves were almost as big as these but were surfed without jet ski's, paddle in, it always been obvious that this wave is very dangerous because there's a huge amount of wave energy and it not only pounds you on the reef, it pounds you on a reef with a very irregular shape and loaded with sharp edges.
i can imagine a number of ways where that would be problematic, but the "Coke bottle treatment" was the wipe-out i feared (vicariously) the most.
anyway, it finally happened about 3-4 years ago. some guy got the Coke bottle treatment and lived for about a half hour, long enough to get to the hospital. died at the hospital. i haven't seen the pics yet.
i found this when i was looking for coke bottle pictures.

WHY would a person want to stick a coke bottle up their butt ?

did anybody notice Kelly Slater's ride where he falls on the take-off, and recovers - in the tube ?
he has freakishly good balance.

Even though I do not keep up with Teahupoo, my gut feeling tells me that Kelly Slater will win. Once I am right, then you can thank me later.
;D ;D ;D
