Awesome Ken! I am stoked for you. Where is Trestles? I hope it's not sharky. If it's near Tunitas creek...aka "don't eat us" creek, i'd be wary. ;D

EDIT: oops, nevermind found trestles on surfline

I have never seen a shark there in the 60 or 70 times I've been there.

But i recently saw this video taken about mile south of Trestles :o

wiping out is part of the fun !

i eventually realized that, since most of my rides ended in wipeouts, i might as well "cut out the middleman", stop trying to catch the wave, and just ride the wipeout. on bigger days in San Diego.

so i would lie down in the water about 50 yards in front of the breaking wave, go through the washing machine, and then, as they say, "wash rinse repeat".

on my last trip to San Diego, the waves were smaller, and i was on a boogie board, and i actually caught some !

but getting back to the serious business of wiping out - i think it's important to surf places where you can enjoy, or at least survive, the wipe-out. because you're going to wipe-out.

San O. looks fun. but it gets so crowded.

Zoltan Torkos makes history by nailing first-ever surfing kickflip

Zoltan "the Magician" Torkos is believed to have made history this week by becoming the first person to nail a surfing kickflip. The popular skateboarding trick involves using the feet to flip the board, while airborne, and return it to an upright position before landing. Because surfboards are bigger and waves are mobile and do not offer reliable lift-off and landing points, performing this trick in the water is a far more difficult prospect. Torkos had been trying to land one since 2007 and finally nailed the trick at Steamer Lane in his hometown Santa Cruz. He even made the local news.

The YouTube video has gone viral and Torkos, 30, said he was mentioned in a Tweet by Tony Hawk and on Facebook by Steve Caballero, both skateboarding legends. "What's next? Handrails in the lineup?" Hawk Tweeted.

Volcom had been offering $10,000 for the first surfer to nail a kickflip and, after some question about whether Torkos had soared high enough above the lip to qualify under its rules, announced Wednesday on its website that it was paying up.

"We really want to celebrate Zoltan's successful kickflip, and continue to push the concept of futuristic surfing. Zoltan was the first and we feel shouldn't be the last," said Mike Guarino, Volcom's director of surfing.

Torkos dedicated the trick to Carl Reimer, a close friend who recently passed away.
