Report: rape investigation of WikiLeaks founder

STOCKHOLM (AP) - A Swedish tabloid reported Saturday that an arrest warrant has been issued for WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on suspicion of rape, and officials said they could confirm "media reports."

Assange addressed the report on WikiLeaks Twitter page, saying "the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing."

The prosecutor's office in Stockholm issued a brief statement saying it "confirms media reports that a foreign citizen has been arrested in absentia" but didn't name Assange.

"The arrest refers to two separate events, one complaint of molestation and one complaint of rape," the statement said.

"The person is arrested in absentia, as there is a risk that he could obstruct the investigation," it said.

Expressen said prosecutor Maria Haljebo Kjellstrand confirmed that Assange, who is an Australian citizen, was the person sought on the warrant. Haljebo Kjellstrand could not be reached for comment Saturday. The prosecutor's office said all information related to the case would be posted on its website.

"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks.' Now we have the first one," WikiLeaks said on its Twitter page.

The first thing I noticed about the Wikileaks founder was that he was kinda wimpy, so this seems way out of context for him, at least in my opinion. That being said, this is most definitely a set up.

I'd dismiss this "rape charge" charade as an example of the rare, but effective Double-Joojitsu-Chutzpah-Maneuver, aimed at "bolstering street-cred" for Assange's true-believing, truth-seeking support base; IE the evil/powerful ones who are desperate to shut Assange's big twoof-telling mouth, are resorting to dirty tricks.... thus Assange must be the real deal! :lol

I stand very skeptical of Wikileaks. Had these documents been truly damaging to the US agenda, they would shut down the site due to "national security" reasons.

Seems like a nice receptical to find some legitimate whistleblowers and remain in control of the documents they submit.

Not necessarily. He put up quite a clear threat - "Take me down, and I have 70GB of information ready to be leaked the moment I am arrested or my site is shut down." And they seemd to be bargaining around that notion. He realeased a file two weeks ago the web called "Insurance" which would go live if he were ever caught.

Swedish prosecutors said yesterday that the founder of controversial whistleblower website WikiLeaks, Julian Assange, was not suspected of rape in Sweden and was no longer wanted for questioning.

"Chief prosecutor Eva Finne has come to the decision that Julian Assange is not suspected of rape," said a statement on the prosecution service's website.

Assange was "no longer wanted," the statement said, adding that Finne would make no other comments.

The prosecution service referred a telephone inquiry from AFP to the website.

A prosecution service spokesperson, Karin Rosander, said earlier that "Julian Assange is wanted for two different issues, one of them is that he's suspected of rape in Sweden."

"The charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing," said a Twitter message attributed to Assange, whose website is in a stand-off with the Pentagon over secret military documents on Afghanistan.

Prosecutor Maria Haljebo Kjellstrand told the TT news agency that the rape was allegedly committed at Enkoping, near Stockholm, and an assault on another woman in the capital

A colleague of the 39-year-old Australian, Kristinn Hrafnsson, told AFP: "Julian denies these allegations and says they are false."

STOCKHOLM — A Swedish court ordered WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange detained on suspicion of rape and sexual molestation Thursday, and an international warrant will be issued for his arrest, according to the judge and prosecutor on the case.

“It has been decided that he be detained in absentia,” Alan Camitz, a Stockholm district court judge on the case, told AFP.

Prosecutor Marianne Ny, who had requested the detention earlier Thursday, meanwhile said an international arrest warrant would soon be issued for the founder of the whistleblower website.

Mr. Assange had been detained in his absence “on probable cause suspected of rape, sexual molestation and unlawful coercion,” she said in a statement, adding that “to execute the court’s decision, the next step is to issue an international arrest warrant.”

In an interview with AFP, Ms. Ny, the head of the department that oversees prosecution of sex crimes, explained that “I requested his arrest so we could carry out an interrogation with Assange. That is the reason.”

A warrant was first issued for Mr. Assange’s arrest on August 20 by another prosecutor on suspicion he had raped one woman and sexually molested another, but the warrant was withdrawn just hours later.

Ms. Ny reopened the rape probe against the 39-year-old Australian on September 1, but did not request his detention, making it possible for him to leave Sweden.

“We have exhausted all the normal procedures for getting an interrogation (and) this investigation has gotten to a point where it is not possible to go further without interrogating Assange himself,” Ms. Ny explained Thursday.
