Obama deficit panel head: Social Security a 'milk cow'
02:47 PM
Groups representing seniors and women are calling on President Obama to replace the Republican co-chairman of a bipartisan fiscal commission over his, shall we say, colorful description of Social Security.
In an email to the head of OWL, which bills itself as "the voice of midlife and older women," former Wyoming senator Alan Simpson called the retirement insurance system "like a milk cow with 310 million tits!" It's in financial trouble, he wrote, because of people who "milk it to the last degree."
It didn't help that Simpson, who's long been known for his salty language and devil-may-care politics, also accused Ashley Carson of "babbling into the vapors" with her steadfast defense of the Social Security system. Or that he signed off: "Call when you get honest work!"
Simpson co-chairs the 18-member panel that's looking into long-term fixes for a budget running $1.5 trillion in the red and a national debt that's topped $13.3 trillion. The panel is due to report to Obama and Congress in December. Social Security is among the potential targets for savings.
