A graffiti tagger was arrested Thursday in connections with 30 vandalism acts in the city of Newark in the last 20 months.

Brian J. Durkee, 31, of the 100 block of Nathaniel Drive in Newark -- who tags as “Smash” -- was charged with 30 counts each of graffiti and possession of a graffiti implement.

Investigators said Durkee’s postings of his work on MySpace provided police with proof of his involvement.

Newark police spokesman Lt. Brian Henry said Durkee vandalized ATM kiosks, signs, traffic and mail boxes, trash cans, business signs, an oil tank and Dumpsters all along Main Street.

The acts date back to January, 2009.

After being charged with the offenses, Durkee was released after posting $3,000 secured bail.

In a way, I dont mind what this guy did.

Taggers live by a code of ethics. The major pillar is to never harm anyone directly or to tag personal property. They go for big companies, govt property, etc... I even enjoy looking at some of the art work. Granted not all over the place in nice areas, but in certain places i think its beautiful, like the cold grey walls of a man made stream. Or right on some ugly bland government building,

I DO NOT however support gang related tagging, believe it or not most tags are not gang related.

I think spray-paint VANDALS should be shot on sight.

If they want to paint legitimate murals, there are plenty of businesses and even public places that would permit it if the "artist" was actually talented.

I think it looks disgusting, as part of his punishment, they should spray-paint his car (IF he has one) all his clothes and personal property :D

I hate seeing that graffitti mess. People caught tagging should be whipped and tagged themselves...

Either way, what a loser. Tagging is for punks. At his age, if he had any respectable skills, he should be doing murals and getting paid for it.
