This is literally one of the most appalling programs on TV. It is clearly derived from Japanese pain and humilation TV programs. I think UFC is probably the worst for getting enjoyment out of other people's hurt. Truly colosseum style entertainment. Why anyone would submit themselves to this escapes me. Punk'd, Jackass....many many more. What happened to humour that didn't involve denigrating someone or spectating on someone elses misfortune... oh hang on.

If you like WIPEOUT!, you should check out some episodes of MXC.
From wikipedia:
"MXC is a re-edit of footage from the Japanese game show Takeshi's Castle which aired in Japan from 1986 to 1989. The re-edit created a new storyline, as a dub was added that centered on the game show hosts narrating the action as people tried to win points for their teams by surviving through different challenges."
MXC is one of the funniest shows ever, and while I agree with much of what glass said above, I can't help but laugh at people falling down.
I can't wait until "OW, My Balls" is actually a real TV show.

What pain????? When they fall, it's either into a pool of water or onto a ridiculously thick pad.

What pain????? When they fall, it's either into a pool of water or onto a ridiculously thick pad.
And it's usually some really nasty-looking water, too. Which would be the main reason I'd never do it.
Cheap laughs? Yea. But the way I see it, as long as the participants are willing, and as horseshoe pointed out, are not really getting hurt I don't see the problem with it.
Is it really much different than people going to see car races for entertainment knowing they'll be seeing stuff like this?
....and these people actually do get hurt sometimes.

We have turned into Japan. I remember when I arrived there thinking, "boy, this would never go over in America." Now everyone is toting some kind of technical gadget and texting and talking while fantasizing over some 16 year old talentless pop idol. It's just a matter of time before everyone is reading manga and dressed as their favorite anime toon.

I'd do it in a heartbeat. I think it would be fun to see if I could beat the course. Frankly, I think it looks pretty easy and if the contestants had the slightest knowledge of physics and timing (ie: don't run out right in front of the big arm, wait until it passes) they would get through no problem. Of course I may be proven wrong in which case I would have a good laugh at myself. Either way, it looks like fun.
Edit: I just watched the video in the OP. Looks like it was harder in earlier seasons. The current version is not nearly as bad.

Wipeout is a good show... designed so that it would be difficult to get seriously injured, but it looks like the contestants do. Mostly I think they just get the wind knocked out of them, and that is kind of funny. I would take on one of those courses in a heartbeat, and probably get my butt kicked doing it, but it looks like fun.

Agree with this completely.

I like it because is for real, if you are hurt then you are hurt......I for one have done A LOT in my life time but this is one game that I would not try, is like riding a motorcycle in the freeway at 70 MPH.....by the way, I have had six motorcycles accidents LOL.
First post of the day..........good morning to one and all.

It's must see TV for my 9 year old. I watch with him. I would love to try it, just not on film:). I would not want to do the thing where they catapult you into the water though!

LOL... Controversial shows... I guess they're the best or worst... depending on your point of view.. I'd try it in a moment!!! I've seen the Japanese show but they don't have the same flavor as the American one... something refreshing about it... ;D

Who doesn't laugh when they see someone fall down? From time immemorial people have laughed at this stuff, it's probably the oldest form of humor in history. Wipeout is simply taking this concept to a higher level. I admit it, I lol'ed.

To see someone get hurt is no fun but to see someone WHO KNOWS that he is going to get hurt and does it anyway is fun.........and that's why I quit riding motorcycles, got tired of watching myself get hurt hahahahahahahaha.

Very interesting observation, something I hadn't considered.
I think japan is the only country to surpass america in buying the most ridiculous pointless consumer items. When I was there a couple years back there were little trinkets for sale all over the place and those purple pissers were buying them like mad, freaking hello kitty was the biggest thing from sliced bread for them. It was bizarre.
