I'm tired of the freezes, the time outs, the interminable load times. How many damn ways must we say it: THE SERVER FVCKING SUCKS!
Talk about administrative inertia! The owners of this forum, by not addressing the sick and ailing heart that is the server have killed this forum. People are not going to visit a forum where 1 out of 3 times the site freezes and will not load. I waited 3 minutes to post this fairwell.
You had a good thing here and you blew it.
Good bye and good luck to all. Maybe another forum will arise from the ashes. If it does, contact BOOK and he knows how to find me. But I can’t take this incompetence anymore. There are lots of fine sites to visit that don’t crash dozens of times per day.
Bye!
P.S. The software sucks! Whenever I think of posting a great article, I just talk myself out of it: the endless cutting and pasting, the clunky formatting, and tedious insertion of images and graphs. I HATE IT! IT IS OBSOLETE ANCIENT CRAP! I can’t do it anymore, so I won’t.
I'll probably lose this posting anyway when the damn server freezes up!

I get post time outs everytime but I just hit the post button again. I have lost a couple of posts when the page did not reload, perhaps 3 which was annoying at the time. Usually I Alt-A, Alt-C my post text before hitting the re-post button. The search always times out as if I "forgot" to type in a search term. I think it is a database issue. I also think I am at least 12 hours out of sync with you guys in the US so I am not on during peak load times, meaning I don't think I see it at the times when it is most underload.
Sorry to see youse guys leaving. I'd like to keep in touch with the great info and ideas you guys contribute so if you end up somewhere thats also good let us know yeah?

It's the server that hosts GSUS, it isn't solely for GSUS it is shared with other sites so bandwidth is erratic and not guaranteed.
It is relatively simple to switch hosts and should only require minimal downtime with no loss of data, there is also a newer version (free) of this software which would help some of the other issues like posting pics.
I've made some recommendations of hosts before not from personal experience but based on recommendations.

Mambo, stick around. Seems like mods are trying tweaks to optimize, deleting inactive users, "Tiny Chat has been removed to test if it is causing the connection problem we experience"... some other stuff I forget, but I think this too shall pass.
JQP: been slow past couple weeks, about 1/4 of times I change pages it hangs, half those time it changes properly after 10 secs or so, other half ends in an error page after maybe 30 secs. I've always got 10-20 tabs open, different stuff I'm reading/monitoring, so when I see GSUS hanging I just cut to something else and come back a few mins later... I don't sit staring at GSUS stalling, pulling my hair out etc. Today seemed a little better than past few weeks. My first guess would be it's the shared bandwidth, as there's just not a storm of activity here, new post every few mins on average, more people just reading.

It seems better right now.
But I have to ask, if the number of connections is the limiting factor, based upon the sites own stats it should have been getting better over time and not worse.
Take a look at the stats at the bottom of this page. (http://gold-silver.us/forum/stats/)
Virtually all the numbers have been in steady decline. :(
Last month there were approx 2/3rds of the number of "page views" there was in April, and it worked good in April.
Or at least I do not recall any problems such as what people have been experiencing lately.
Either way, I appreciate your effort in resolving these matters because I do realize that you probably have an actual real-World life to take care of once in awhile too.

That may be true, but less traffic on the server won't cause it to be slower. If anything, it should be faster.
It almost has to be something with the forum software itself. Otherwise the main page would have the same issue. But it doesn't. It only gets slow if it has /forum on the addy and you can ping the server 24/7 with consistent times of 55ms.

This is not the only site with this problem. I have gotten exactly the same behavior (but not as often) with Yahoo mail, my favorite radio station, another forum running the same software, another forum running different software, icanhascheezburger.com, and rarely some others. It has happened with Firefox, IE, and Chrome. As far as I know the only thing common to all these things is the internet.

I see some improvement but every once in a while for me, it is slow to load the main forum page but so far no time out errors or database errors but then again it is still early in morning. The real test will be in the afternoon and evening/night times. That is the time span that I encounter the most problems with the database errors.

I am sorry to hear that,
I never had any real issues with those problems.
My only complaint were "ease of use" (i.e. limit on text for posting requiring multiple cut and pastes, inability to directly copy pictures in (attachments only), etc)
these are minor annoying issues.
But as CC said above, I donated at GIM, I would donate here
we want this to be a good experience for everyone, and mamboni was not the only one saying things were not working right.
Maybe we can get some input on other options (an upgrade, or better software, etc)
I think if members are leaving (especially a veteran like Mamboni), then we need to take this issue seriously, and look at all options to solve it.
after all this is the "island of misfit toys", most of us have no other real place to go.

If we as a whole are going to actually try to fix the issue we will need some more info, something to start with is what is the timeout setting in mysql currently configured to? This is the basis to the issue - the db is timing out while trying to complete its query.
It might not be a shared server issue.
If I have access to the server I can help pinpoint the problem (I do this sort of thing for a living) but I will need a DBA of sorts to work with to actually tweak the settings for mysql. I use M$ SQL and administer many web servers/dbs daily.

Hey Admins, I went and did some digging on this server issue. I used to host a webserver using MySql. This seems to make sense.
So here is what it said to do:
In order to resolve the problem you may need to increase these two values in mysql.ini or my.cnf (different Operating Systems use different files) , and restart mysql.
wait_timeout = 28800
connect_timeout = 28800
(Figures used are the default values in seconds = 8hours).
This error is usually occurs on cheap shared servers where the above values have been changed from default and set far too low. (In an attempt to keep database server very responsive, but to the expense of basic usability).
If you don't have access to change these settings (most likely if you are on Shared Hosting), then you'll need to ask your host to do.
However some hosts may refuse to increase the values. In that case the only solution therefore would be to find a better host.

According to www.my-ip-neighbors.com gold-silver.us has 584 IP "Neighbors" which means godaddy is over sold and we're competing with bandwidth with the other 584 "neighbors".
That could also be a problem with the timeout deal.

Mamboni: if you want to leave, then just leave. No need to be a drama queen about it.

I have the occasional slow load, but for the most part GSUS is quick and responsive.
Nice place.
uncontrolled lockups and lag spikes are caused by having too much porn on your computer ;D

I've never once had a problem getting this site up to read and I do it several times a day. Are the
problems with loading pictures and articals from other sites? If it is, I guess thats why I wouldn't have
any trouble 'cause I don't know how to do those things anyway. I use ixquick if thats any help.

Hey Admins,
ARES, THANKS, I believe it is a traffic issue, it works fast then it does not.
Even now when I was posting.
Thanks for your info, with one line in code you can fuck up a server/forum, who knew ? lol !
Very scary.
ARES, these forums need tech help from TRUSTED KNOWN MEMBERS .
Not some god dam 10 sockpuppet troll hiding, this makes me mad cause
we been saying get some tech help and even offering money and nobody
is saying nada, why ? We are legit. There are people here that can help.
