Following the shooting of four members of the Borough Park Shomrim last week by a man caught exposing himself to children, state Sen. Eric Adams announced Monday that he had purchased five vests for the Chasidic neighborhood watch group in Brooklyn and would raise funds to purchase more, according to WINS Radio.

“The only barrier between the safety of our children and this criminal behavior was this organization that we are standing in front of now," Adams told reporters Monday, "and that needs to be clearly understood.”

Adams retired as a captain in 2006 after serving 22 years with the New York City Police Department. A sometimes controversial figure, he co-founded 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care, an advocacy group for black police officers, and often spoke out against police brutality and racial profiling.

Patterson suffered a broken eye socket, a torn retina, blood clotting, and cuts and bruises to his knee and ankles during the attack.

The group only stopped when a passing bus driver stopped to confront them at which point they fled.

All five suspects were arraigned in Brooklyn’s Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon and released on bails ranging from $50,000 and $25,000.

They face up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

These indictments send a clear message that acts of vigilantism are unacceptable and cannot be condoned by the NYPD,’ Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said in a statement to the New York Daily News.

New York City is off the legal hook for the brutal beating of a gay black man who was half-blinded in a Brooklyn attack linked to an orthodox Jewish neighborhood watch group.

The victim, Taj Patterson, told a "troubling tale" about cozy relationships between the NYPD and Williamsburg Shomrim, Brooklyn Federal Judge Nicholas Garaufis said Wednesday. But Patterson's federal civil rights suit was too slim on specifics to keep the city a part of it, the judge said.

Five men were charged in the beating. Two cases got tossed and two ended in plea deals.

The last person, Mayer Herskovic, was convicted of gang assault and sentenced to four years. He is out pending appeal. Prosecutors said they had Herskovic's DNA on Patterson's sneaker.

Herskovic is appealing and his lawyers have said he wasn't linked with the watch group.

Patterson had surgery three times, but doctors couldn't salvage sight in his right eye.

In his civil case, filed in June 2016, Patterson argued the city should be on the hook for the wrongs of an unsupervised private police it funded.

Patterson served up "generalized accounts" of special treatment for the Shomrim groups, but didn't point to particulars that linked to his case, Garaufis said.

Hasidic Man Convicted of Beating Black Student Gets Verdict Overturned

When five Orthodox Jewish men were accused of beating — and partially blinding — a young black fashion student four years ago in Brooklyn, it briefly reignited one of New York City’s most incendiary racial divides: the one between the borough’s Hasidic and African-American communities.

The case became even more contentious when the prosecutors suddenly dropped their charges against two of the defendants and let the other two plead guilty to lesser crimes, avoiding time in prison. Only one man, Mayer Herskovic, was ultimately convicted at trial and sentenced to state prison.

But in a sweeping decision issued Wednesday, a state appeals court overturned Mr. Herskovic’s guilty verdict and threw out his indictment, saying there was simply not enough evidence to convict him, or to charge him in the first place.

In their decision, the appellate judges noted that the victim of the beating, Taj Patterson, had failed to identify his assailants and that the DNA evidence that prosecutors used to convict Mr. Herskovic was “less than convincing.”

While appeals courts sometimes dismiss a guilty verdict and order a defendant to be retried, it is much less common for an appellate panel to toss out a conviction on the facts, which leads automatically to the underlying indictment being dismissed.

But the judges for the Second Judicial Department Appellate Division used their “independent factual review power” to render what amounted to a post-trial acquittal.

Police have arrested and charged five ultra-Orthodox Haredi Jews over the December beating of a gay black fashion student they caught walking in their neighborhood at 4.30am in the morning.
