i don't entirely understand the appeal of the Wedge. that place has put a lot of people in wheel chairs.
(of course, so has Pipeline.)
what they have in common is the "gladiator pit" quality - at both places the audience (people sitting on the beach) are close to the action, both breaks are real close to shore.
20 feet of wave breaking in 3 feet of water ... or less. it's so much different than a 20 foot wave breaking in 30 feet of water, which is typical for the big swells in North County San Diego beachbreaks.
a trip through the "washing machine" is very different from a bottom slam. i keep my elbows above my head because i met a guy at the Y that broke a neckbone (but not paralyzed) from body-surfing the reef in La Jolla. he was going through a divorce and let his guard down and the wave head-butted him on the reef.

Ken, what do the surfer dudes have to say about the NWO ?

No sh*t, what about the bottom too, rocks, looks like a very bad place.
A friend of mine went to Hawaii on a friggin boogy board and ended up
with his neck broken cause of the waves, he was into surfing, and he
was young and fit, and he was a marine, and a very agressive sales
person and good looking guy, the crest of the wave pushed him to
the bottom coming down on him and that was it, something was there.
Dead. Apparently that has happened to a lot of people on holidays as
well not knowing the strength of the waves, another young guy I know
of who was a fighter and hater of communists in real life, same thing
happened to him swimming in rough waters. Tonnes of water pushing

i find that "worst wipeouts" is a favorite topic among surfers. i guess they call it "talking story". bro. ;D
one of the gnarliest ones i've heard about is Gerry Lopez' "fin up the butt" wipeout at 20 foot Pipeline (10 foot Hawaiian scale).
there was also a Surfline video about Shane Dorian where he talks about wiping out at Maverick's on a big day. he got one extra breath going over the falls and another when he came to the surface for a moment.
in the interview, he almost sounds like he's going to abandon big-wave surfing because he realizes it could take him away with his kids. you know if a wave is big enough to put the fear of Maverick's in someone as experienced as Dorian, it's a good idea to take it very seriously.
actually, that reminds me of a subject that is kind of touchy, Mark Foo's death at Maverick's in 1994. he flew in from Hawaii, where he was an accomplished big wave surfer with a TV show about surfing. he paddled out on a very big day at Maverick's and died sometime in the next hour.
i think the mistake he made was to think that his experience in warm-water big waves would "translate" at Maverick's. also to not take time on a smaller day to get to know the break, where the rocks are, how the currents move when a set washes through, etc.

you probably won't see it. Mick talked about it and Kelly talked about how bad he felt about it.
i'm still not sure exactly how hassling works.
i know it involves paddling around and being annoying and almost blocking the other competitor, without technically breaking a rule. but they don't often show it on video, and they don't talk about it much.
Mick didn't want to elaborate.
one other time when this came up was at the 2006 Pipeline Masters. Andy Irons - who ended up winning - hassled Rob Machado a bunch. Rob got him back the next year at the Lowers contest. AI, a high seed, got the wild-card - Machado. that about the only time i've ever heard Machada express anger, ever, when he was talking about AI hassling him at Pipe.
Rob beat AI at the Lowers contest in 2007.
the thing is, Mick can hassle with the best of them. now that Kelly has set the precedent, it's almost like Kelly is asking for a fight.
one of the surfer mags need to have an article an explain tactics of priority etc. i'm not really doing it justice.
still, it was real entertaining. their success ratio on the difficult airs was a lot higher. they were basically doing 360's at will.

I think the 2nd and 3rd pics are both boogie boards right?
When I was a younger man I used to boogie board on the east coast. The waves were never that big but I think there were fairly decent sized waves a few times when hurricanes would come by. Good times. I never tried surfing but being in the water and riding the wave was great. Even though you're more or less powerless to the wave for a second you almost feel as though you're controlling it or at least that's how I felt.
Great thread!

Share Print Font: +-VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. — Officials closed three beaches in California on Friday after a shark killed a bodyboarder, local media reported.
The attack occurred off Surf Beach at Vandenberg Air Force Base on Friday morning.
The 20-year-old victim died after the shark bit off his leg. A friend on a surfboard got the victim to shore but he bled to death, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown told reporters.
The victim was a University of California, Santa Barbara student, Brown said. His name was not immediately released.
Officials at Vandenberg closed Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches for at least 72 hours, Lt. Ann Blodzinski told the Santa Barbara Independent. Surf Beach is in Santa Barbara County, just north of Los Angeles County.
In September 2008, base officials issued a 48-hour warning to beach users after a shark bit a surfer’s board at Surf Beach, according to the Santa Maria Times.
Base officials said at the time that they believed it was the first shark incident off Vandenberg, the newspaper reported.
Fatal shark attacks are rare in the area. A great white shark killed a woman in 2003 at Avila Beach, about 30 miles north of Vandenberg.
Great whites also killed two men in 2004 and 2008 at beaches in Mendocino and San Diego counties.

I was surfing a mile north(D Street) of the Solana Beach attack. Not alot of people paddled in. And, the victim's kids were back surfing the spot their dad was killed at a few hours later. It's said you're more likely to get killed getting to the beach, than getting attacked by the man in the gray suit.

Like anything fun there's risks, but the odds are better that I'm probably going to get hit by a bus crossing the street than eaten by jaws. I did just read on drudge this morning though that a 19 year old boogie boarder was attacked and killed by a shark near Vandenberg north of Santa Barbara.

Nelscott was pretty cool today. The weather was perfect and the waves were big. I'll try and post some pictures of the riders getting towed out at some point. I didn't get any pictures of the actual rides since my camera won't zoom out that far. Even with my binoculars the riders were pretty dang small against the backdrop of the waves. I didn't stick around to see if they finished since there was talk of maybe running the final tommorrow. I did get a picture of the board showing the semi-final standings. The final will consist of Mamala, Bertish, R Long, Sterling, Mel, & Christensen. I don't know who the current big names are so not sure if anybody recognizes any of the names.

i'm afraid that there's some incredibly sad news this morning.
3X World Champ Andy Irons got Dengue Fever at the contest in Puerto Rico and has passed away.
He did not attend his 2 heats & flew home. He checked into a motel room in Dallas in between flights, on the way from Puerto Rico to Hawaii.
The maid found him dead.
Andy leaves behind a pregnant wife Lyndie.
Andy was strong as a bull. He could take a massive pounding at Pipeline and somehow not get hurt.
The contest in Puerto Rico is called off for the day and the entire surfing world is in shock.

This is a different era than the days when people would send threatening messages to the mags for printing pics of northwest surfspots. People are surfing Arctic and Antarctic these days. It might even be safe to surf Seaside ;)
Edit-Maybe not (from a surf travel guide)
Park in the beach lot at the south end of town...<br />You'll be right at the base of the point....leave an armed guard at your car if you don't have Oregon license plates....Take mace or a waterproof 9mm out to the break with you.....Don't take any trouble from anybody and let them know you're armed!....Good Luck!

I've heard the Seaside stories. Too far north for me to bother finding out. Seems kinda ironic since there isn't a more "touristy" town on the coast than Seaside if you ask me.
Not too many jerks here on the Central Coast. A lot of the surfers here are CA transplants serving in the Coast Guard, so they come and go anyways.

i'm afraid that there's some incredibly sad news this morning.
The contest in Puerto Rico is called off for the day and the entire surfing world is in shock.

i watched that contest, including the heat when Slater won. though it was all surreal because of Andy Irons' death.
in Round 4 i think, Slater was hassled by Adriano de Souza, the top-ranked Brazilian surfer. he complained about it in the post-heat interview, which Slater usually doesn't do. Slater is the ultimate power-hassler and he usually doesn't complain about other people hassling.
then, the heat that won Slater the world , he was also surfing against de Souza - and ran rings around him.
as far as what hassling is ... maybe it can be described as sort of, sumo wrestling on surfboards, except you can't touch your opponent.
they paddle to keep the other guy off of waves, all sorts of mind tricks.
but Slater is the king of hassling. i would say it (surfer hassling) is 5 to 10% of a pro-surfer's skill-set.
i remember one heat with Jeremy Flores in Europe where Flores was a rookie and Slater paddled up to him to congratulate him for winning the heat - but the heat wasn't over. Flores was star-struck and didn't notice the good wave approaching. though Flores had priority on the wave (first dibs if he wanted it), he didn't try to catch it, because he was busy extending his hand to Slater to shake hands. but Slater wasn't trying to shake hands, he was trying to make Flores miss the wave. Slater got the wave and won the heat.
now we have Pipeline coming up starting Wednesday Dec. 8. they have waves coming from the North about Wednesday.

more news for those that have followed Andy Irons -
the Pipe Masters was scheduled for December 6 - i think. i've looked at the schedule a few times this year and i could have sworn it was the 6th.
as it turns out, Andy's wife is scheduled to give birth on Wednesday December 8. It sounds like they will induce labor or something.
And, as it turns out, that is now the start date of the Pipe Masters. The relevance to Andy is that he won some of his championships by beating Kelly Slater at Pipeline.
Andy died at a stop-over airport hotel at the Dallas Airport. he was recovering from Dengue Fever, returning from Puerto Rico to Hawaii.
There is a video about it at -

the Surfer Poll tribute to Andy.
it is kind of a unique way to conduct a surf competition - induced labor for the child of the recently deceased (November 2, 2010) King of Pipe - on the first day of the 2010 contest.
