ScienceDaily (Sep. 3, 2010) — Expanding their scope of study on the mechanisms of bacterial infection, researchers at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have reported the surprise finding from a small clinical study that cranberry juice cocktail blocked a strain of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) from beginning the process of infection.

I wish I knew this when I had my MRSA infection last year. Took 30 days of antibiotics.

Thanks for posting that, my youngest boy had Staph. Nasty stuff.

The article also says cranberry juice helps against E. Coli.

Perhaps cranberry juice would be a good item to stock up on for preps. In a SHTF situation we might be in a scenario where infections are running wild, but medicine is not readily available.

Btw, do you train Kali? I did just a class or two. I'm mostly into kung fu though.

I'm not surprised! I think cranberry juice is the most underrated juice for health, curing infections, etc. It's definitly something I want to add more to in preps.

Cranberries have long been valued for their ability to help prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Now, recent studies suggest that this native American berry may also promote gastrointestinal and oral health, prevent the formation of kidney stones, lower LDL and raise HDL (good) cholesterol, aid in recovery from stroke, and even help prevent cancer.

12 years ago I invested in Cranberry company's.... thinking Cranberries were gonna be the next cure-all rage....nothing happened....

Might be a good thing to be farming though....and Pomegranates too.

Was at Costco today ... WARNING - READ THE LABELS ... a lot of these "juices" have high fructose corn syrup, and are mixes of the cheap juices with a bit of the expensive juice. For instance, a big label that says "Cranberry-Pomegranate" , then you read the fine print and it has a mix of apple, grape, with a bit of the cran and pom mixed in.

I could not find at Costco, a complete cran-only juice in the large juice bottles section.

Langers brand still doesn't have HFCS - and it's still inexpensive, the same price as other normal store brands. It also lists the cranberry juice content on the label... 27% if I remember correctly.

If you are going to buy cranberry juice buy it pure , Cranberry's and filtered water. All the ones in the stores are loaded with sugar.

I have bought this pretty expensive, but worth it and I dilute it with water (very bitter)

onehttp://www.scojuice.com/, pretty expensive at trader Joes , $ 12.00

That's the main reason for adding sugar to Cranberry juice, it's extremely acidic (bitter), you can also buy cranberry supplements too, also as mentioned the main rationale to drink cranberry juice is to acidify the urine, many MO's can't tolerate an acidic environment and also it reduces the chances a MO may cling to the lining of the ureathra ...actually cranberry and apple juices increase the risk of certain kinds of renal calculi

They are the sweetened ones by ocean spray, Just cranberry's and sugar (no HFCS)

They are great in oatmeal cookies and other baked goods too.

I remember my grandmother had a couple cranberry trees. I would eat them right off the tree..They were really strange...kinda dry and bitter...but I still ate them every chance I got...
I liked em for some strange reason. Almost like a really dry wine...or vermouth ....lol

Cranberry makes a very strong flavored drink, not fit for drinking. A few years ago I heard of one brand that is drinkable without being cut. The point is you are very unlikely to find pure cranberry juice unless you squeeze it yourself.

But as for treating diseases, it would be good to study a bit of nutrition. Without that knowledge you are studying magic. Start with Adele Davis (http://www.amazon.com/s/178-5607312-7466464?ie=UTF8&tag=mozilla-20&index=blended&link_code=qs&field-keywords=adele%20davis&sourceid=Mozilla-search). Her material is no longer up to date, but it is still by far the best introduction to the subject.

That's interesting, Ken... Since Cranberrys grow on low-creeping viney shrubs - not trees. ;)

Probably Jujubees... I ate a lot of those off the tree as a child... Bitter but good. Did what you ate have a hard cylindrical pit? If so, probably jujubees.

The ones I ate as a kid, did NOT look like these cranberries though

http://cdn-write.demandstudios.com/upload//8000/900/10/3/378913.jpg

I don't think they grew in clumps...and the were kinda of a dull red and aboblong...(not round)

This juice is probably the better one on the market to buy...

http://www.scojuice.com/products/juices/cranberry_nectar

But they are all pastuerized...I believe the study mentioned above was with pastuerized juice though.

I'm going to try to juice my own when they come in season in the next couple of months.

I've had MRSA before and it aint no fun...anything that might help, Im takin.

That is the truth. I recently bought some 100% cranberry juice and it was extremely bitter and tart and sour. Undrinkable. No wonder companies who actually sell that stuff have to load it up with sugar and dilute it with apple juice etc...lol.

Yeah,I just make sure I buy the kind with the sugar and not HFCS. I'm not ambitious enough to juice it:).

My younger son lived off craisins until he was 3. That was one of about 5 foods he would eat:).

Thanks for posting the article, interesting.

We do the same

Probably one of the better deals there comparing costco and retail prices
