The Constitution requires no such thing. No establishment of a state church is not "all religion is to be excluded," especially against the wishes of the majority of the American people.

When you displace God, you must replace Him with something, either yourself, or perhaps a government. The exclusion of God has correlated with the deification of the self and the State.

Separation of Church and State means no State mandated Church, like they had in England, nothing more.
