Suspect in Copenhagen hotel blast charged and detained
DANISH police charged an unidentified man today over a hotel blast in Copenhagen, accusing him of attempting to launch a deadly attack using an improvised explosive device, a court official said.
The suspect who received the help of a French interpreter during his appearance in court, was also charged with possession of a firearm before being remanded in custody.
The suspect denied the charges against him and said he could not recall either his age or his name.
The accused man appeared in court on crutches, with the lower part of one leg missing and with injuries to his face, the Ritzau news agency reported. The suspect's appearance suggested he was either from the Balkans region or from north Africa, Ritzau reported.
Earlier reports in the Danish media yesterday suggested that the suspect was born in 1983 and was from Luxembourg.
"We don't know who he is, what his target was and if he was acting alone," prosecutor Jens Rassmussen said, Ritzau reported.
Court spokesman Kim Yrdahl said the explosion took place in the restroom of the Joergensen Hotel, in central Copenhagen, but was thought to have originally been planned for another location.
Police arrested him yesterday in Oersted Park, near the Joergensen Hotel, following the blast.
Denmark has been considered vulnerable to Islamist attacks since 2005, when a major daily newspaper published cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that outraged many Muslims.
Security was increased in the country prior to the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks in the US.
