Looking to add a rat terrier to the family...theres 2 breeders within 100 miles that have pups...one of the available dogs is the last of the litter so Im guessing its the runt.

Also, I believe they are Deckers.

Anyone got any advice...never had one of these dogs but from my research would match what we are looking for.

Not sure if I should go with the runt either...

What's a rat terrier?

And what do you want from this type of dog, i.e. just as a family pet, etc?

They are great dogs the only thing about them is they are high energy
and DO NOT slow down while they are awake.

They are the dog worlds answer to the "energizer bunny" they keep going
and going and etc, etc.

They act like they are on meth , slow and lay back is not in their nature.
But they are great dogs you need to work them and or give something to do
everyday (job).

The smallest in the litter aka the runt is strictly a matter of placement in the womb during pregnancy and little else. The runt has every bit of an equal chance of being the best puppy in the litter. I once had a female puppy who was 1/2 the size of the males when born. In order for her to be able to get enough nourishment I had to hand-feed her for a few days since the others were pushing her out of the way otherwise she would not have survived. As an adult she ended up being larger than the more robust female puppies and was the absolute best dog I ever had bar none.

I always heard the runt is usually the best of the liter.

I had a jack Russel that was like this...You would NEVER see that dog laying down.

Rat Terriers are supposed to be slightly less as active...but never know.

We have had two.

Best start to understanding them is to label them as Rat TERRORISTS. I don't think they have a chicken-bone in their body. All balls.

Think a heavy metal band on speed, the volume turned all the way up and on FAST PLAY.

Great dogs, they really are, but we prefer Anatolian Shepards, Great Danes and Great Pyrenees.

The last Rat Terrier we had LED THE CHARGE going after a group of coyotes. The little shit beat the big dogs to the coyotes and paid for it. When the other dogs got there the coyotes wound up dead-four of them, but too late to protect the Rat Terrorist.

Too much heartace to go through that again.

You get one and can spend the time I doubt you will be unhappy.

Good luck.
