Boy's caretaker charged with murder
Zion woman delivered sixth child hours later

News-Sun Staff Report

A 35-year-old Zion woman who told police she "snapped" faces two counts of murder in the Labor Day death of a 5-year-old boy, Zion police announced late Sunday.

Over the course of two days she "hit him with a belt and banged his head off the bath tub and floor," Police Chief Wayne Brooks said.

Brooks described Yolanda L. Jones as the boy's caregiver, who was going into labor and delivered her sixth child shortly after taking the boy to Midwest Regional Medical Center. Jones baby was born that day at Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan.

Brooks said the boy had died "many hours prior to arriving at the hospital" and had "extensive visible bruising, from the top of his head to his knees. He had recent bleeding from his nose, ears and head area."

Jones told hospital staff that the boy fell on a parking block while running in the parking lot at Sheridan Motel, 3412 Sheridan Road, Brooks said.

The Lake County Coroner's Office conducted an autopsy on Wednesday and determined that the child suffered severe, non-accidental blunt-force trauma to the head and brain, Brooks said.

Prior to the arrest, detectives interviewed and re-interviewed Jones' older children. "The children's initial accounts of the incident appeared to be rehearsed," Brooks said.

Detectives also viewed several days of surveillance video from the entrance and parking lot of the motel.

"Many hours before the juvenile was brought to the hospital, Yolanda Jones could be seen on video holding the limp body of the deceased male juvenile. The investigation was delayed because detectives could not interview Yolanda until Friday, due to her medical condition after delivery of her baby and not being released from Vista East Medical Center until then," Brooks said.

Jones admitted to detective Sabas Mercado, that she "snapped" and had beaten the child over the course of two days, Brooks said.

"She told Mercado that amongst other things he 'wet the bed.'"

Jones, who gave her address as room 7 at the local motel, remained in the Lake County Jail Sunday night in lieu of $3 million bond. Her prior address was 1301 Buck Ave., Waukegan.

The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services had a previous case involving Jones and has taken all six of her children into custody, Brooks said.
